If he continues to be a top 25 goalie in the league, this is a really good deal. If he starts playing like a backup, it's a $5 million ish cap hit until 2032 for a backup.

It could go either way long-term. As others have said, perhaps it's an unnecessary risk.

A clear minority of them. Most starting goalies in the NHL today established themselves as starters before their late 20s.

The Flyers will pay a premium on players who want to be here. They don’t have any other plays to make.

With the shortage of decent goalies I feel like you almost have to gamble when you have one who has a good year. It’s the one position where you need to be a risk taker or end up shuffling in low end goalies every year.

Goalies are voodoo and of course there is risk, but I see him a lot closer to a Vejmelka or Blackwood than a Lankinen.

Extending Vladar is fine. Having him locked up for the next six years is just too long. This would make sense if it was two years shorter.

Kind of baffling from the Flyers. Waiting another 6-12 months to see if the results were replicated wouldn't increase the cap hit all that much
