GDT: Fly Canesmen Fly Upon Your Mystery Ship

Morrow is feeling things out.. he’s still figuring out what he can get away with at this level and what will not work.. he can be pressured and he can be exposed in those situations still…. he tries to hero puck it too many times. He has gotten away with it more times than it has bit him…. But some of it works so he is starting to feel empowered to do those things that will drive Brindy and the coaching staff nuts who want us in rigid structure in certain looks and situations.. it’s a really cool comparison to watch him try to get shots on net from the point versus Burns.. Morrow is finding angles and shot locations that make it past the high forward trying to block whereas Burns has had more and more trouble as time has gone on getting the shot through…. The main difference is reaction time and Morrows pucks have less zip and speed on them while Burns still tries to get as much power as before and doesn’t have enough time to get it wound up before the forward reacts and moves to intercept.. morrow trying to react faster and just get them through.. so less options and more chance to be blocked or saved closer to the goalie when morrow does it… but also higher percentage get there and provide chance of rebound if the forwards adjust to what morrow is doing…. Burns, when he gets into one is harder shot and if it does get through usually gets all the way to the net.. and more seem to actually be below the crossbar and on net the last few games…. Burns seeing the competition and stepping up more? Because for most of the year he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if it even got through…

It’s fascinating to watch the evolution of Morrows play and to see the comparison with Burns..…. We just need to see more reps from him to see if it’s sustainable and he needs more reps to see and feel more comfortable himself. Morrow is trying to make a case for having a permanent spot. I haven’t seen enough to say he should be gifted a slot on the pairing with Slavin just yet. But he is miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiles better than the level he was at the end of his university season and in his first few games with us at the end of last year…. The time in the AHL has really been good for him….. watching a lot of his games last season at UMass on ESPN+, I had serious questions if he really would be able to make the transition to the NHL level right away or if it would need time in the minors….This current run of games are doing a lot to ease my doubts…. We need to figure out how to keep him playing and learning until the end of the year..

As to the rest, same type of comments as last night…. Philly put up more of a fight than Detroit did.. they try to block more shots and have a strong box in front of the net but they are short some players and are a bit downtrodden coming out of the trade deadline.. we did a good job playing at pace and pushing hard the whole game from the whole lineup… it was consistent across the lines to push and be fast north south hockey.. Robinson again had a game and is auditioning for a new deal. I hope we get something done with Hall. He still has a lot left in the tank and I’m happy he is here. He seems to want to stay and get some stability and we should give it to him as we have more and more kids come up through the ranks…

Im concerned that we have a regular season Aho line. Come playoff time where it gets heavier and more physical that shrimp line of Aho, Jarvis and Blake is going to get shut down and hurt. But for now it is working… and Jankowski seems like the steal of trade deadline…. Hope he keeps it up for the rest of the year and next year since he has another year on his deal at barely above league minimum…

Two points, another W in that column, one step closer to our goal. Loving the win streak. Everyone playing free and loose and with real confidence. Almost hate they have such a break to rest. Want to just keep rolling to keep the momentum going.

The offense was never in question other than the choices he makes with the puck. He’s been playing sheltered minutes the whole time he’s been called up and mostly has offensive zone starts as they’re setting him up for success as best they can. The offense looks like it always has other than now that he’s playing pro he’s a bit quicker to share the puck - which is a huge maturation point that you hoped/expected would happen.

So the negative effect he has defensively on a team has been highly minimized as he rarely plays much in his end. He was still getting Rod’s comments because the attention to detail is what passes Rod’s test. His defensive positioning and play around the net is what will allow him to stay or not be a highly limited 6th or 7th defenseman. Even on his goal he struggled in his end. The play went behind the net and his only job was to contain the forward he had up against the boards, that forward escaped and walked right in front of the net for a big chance that led to a scrum that Morrow just stood and watched which is a common issue. He often stands around the slot trying to figure out who he’s supposed to cover. If a puck pops loose he’s like a fat kid on a cupcake galloping up the ice.

You’d rather try to hold back a tiger than paint stripes on a donkey, so that’s great but his success isn’t dictated by the offense with Rod. It’s whether or not the kid can be trusted to not let forwards escape his coverage with the puck and walk right in front of the net.

His offense looks good and he’s someone that always wants to make a positive difference. Hes always been a bit of a Necas on defense. It looks great but you’re not always sure what it is.

"He often stands around the slot trying to figure out who he’s supposed to cover."

FWIW: every player who has joined the Canes needs a break-in period to understand their defensive responsibilities.....even a grizzled vet like Hall remarked last night that he is still trying to figure out things with the Canes (but is getting more comfortable).

Thus, I'm not as concerned re: your observation there.....I would think with video review and play he would improve. Also, I'd add that his ability to work within the D zone and make breakout passes to the stick to the right player has been well above average.

As always I’m absolutely hoping you’re right. Just pointing out that every coach he has had, including Carvel who was given credit for doing a lot of solo video work with Morrow has pointed these things out to him for years. Rod took him to task publicly just a few days ago. This is clearly a work in progress. Of course all players take some time adjusting. It’s always been a question of whether or not Morrow would eventually listen to someone and a question of is he capable of understanding it.

It’s always one game at a time. I don’t think there’s a single player on the D Rod would demote to play Morrow on the right side permanently. If he works Morrow into a rotation where he gives guys a break down the stretch and keeps him it would be a real positive step forward and a real sign he’s getting a good chance. When Orlov gets back it very possible the kid goes right back down with your video work on his phone. There shouldn’t really be any consternation if it happens.

How did I COMPLETELY miss that we had a game yesterday? Maybe I should miss more if they're gonna win 5-0!?!? Anyone got a TLDR of the game, other than Janky > >>>>> Rants?

TLDR:
- Blake pulled a fancy, Aho cleaned up
- Jankowski benefitted from terrible Flyers D/goalie
- A PPG that actually looked like a functional PP
- Jankowski snipe
- Morrow gets his first with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game.
- Kotchetkov remains very, very good

This is mind blowing. Does everyone else just suck, or what?

Kind of. Outside of Washington, no other team has really played well with any kind of consistency.

Washington's longest losing streak this year is 3 games, which only happened once. And they've only lost 2 games in a row a few times.

The Panthers had a 4-game losing streak in November and basically played .500 hockey in January. The Leafs, as I said earlier, looked great until this recent skid. And I don't need to tell you about our season.

I missed the game too, heard there was a stank goal called back? Anyone have video of that?

Picture the behind the net pass that Jarvis has scored on a few times this year with that line, but replace Jarvis with Tank. And then rewind it about 20 seconds and realize Staal was very obviously offside on the initial zone entry.
