Surely we would have to take some contract(s) back, but a Cup winning goalie won't be that difficult to move in a league desperate for goalies
Not easy. Moreover, it defeats the purpose to take much back in the way of salary, plus the defending champs would be out one likely Conn Smythe Winner. Would they turn over their team to a promising but still untested Spencer Knight (in the playoffs), or have to go out and find a good veteran to platoon with him? Dumping a goalie is a tough way to clear cap when the move usually requires another to replace him immediately.

I don't see this as the move they are going to make, not with the season Bob has had, and not with the hardware that he's likely to haul in later this month.

It looks good but..

Reinhart is gonna eat 10m+ next year
Ekblad is gonna eat 10m+ in a few years
Lundell is gonna eat 7m+ next year

lolol at suggesting panthers will pay Montour 7+ after what they just got for Forsling. Lol and Reino likely leaving? Nah, reino likely signing on a team friendly deal. Also, I’m sure Zito has guys on his radar ready to replace anyone who he doesn’t sign, and the squad will keep humming. There are highly skilled undervalued players who deserve a chance in Florida and want to play there. Zito knows who they are and nobody else does.
You are too spoiled thinking everyone is just going to take team friendly discounts.

Rhino won't get more than 9.
Ekblad won't get a raise, from us anyways.
Lundy will get a bridge deal until they figure what to do with Benny and Swaggy.

How would it get better? Reinhart alone will be cashing in. Easily getting 9-10M on an 8 year deal.

And Barkov and Tkachuk aren't exactly on "team friendly" deals at 10M and 9.5M.

So you have 4 players, Bob included, making 40M+

edit - oh and forgot about Montour. How much will get get?
Florida better win the Cup................their cap situation is definitely not in a good spot going into next year, just my opinion, and agree with you....
Ask the Hawks it is a pleasant problem after you win the Cup, but still a problem.
Key players are leaving there is no doubt.

Their best goal scorer and one of their best defensemen need contracts this offseason.

Lundell will get a decent raise too.

They have a little over 20M in cap space with 7 forwards a 4 defensemen under contract. They need 8 more players to fill that roster. Montour likely makes 7+, Lundell gets 3+. The other 6 guys will be on ELCs or 1-2M players.

They certainly won't be in a better position next year compared to the current one and I wouldn't say they are in the best position in general.

It's good they have flexibility but they need to fill that roster and it's unlikely they will be able to keep Reinhart.
Montour will not be making more than Forsling

They'll keep Reinhart, lose Montour.

Ekblad isn't gonna eat anywhere close to 10. His body is broken by injuries, and his numbers have gone down the last couple years due to Maurice deploying him in a shutdown role. He doesn't have the numbers for 10. He'll accept something around 5-6 per, understanding his role, age, and injury prone status.

The whole point of the cap is to help teams like Florida and hurt teams like Toronto.

NHL History 101.
It isn't to hurt teams like Toronto. It's to make the league fair. Toronto can still outspend anyone on scouting, player development, coaching, trainers, sports science, etc. Florida just spends their money more wisely.

The cap will hurt teams that win, actually win, and help teams that are trying to win. TB is screwed, also a tax advantage team, because they won. They gave out too many Cup contracts, as pretty much every Cup winning team does, and now they're not going to win again any time soon. Florida, if they win, in all likelihood, will do the same thing.

They're lucky that Bob is already going to be 36 in Sept, and still signed until 2026. Just like the Caps got lucky that Holtby wasn't up for a contract right after they won, and had a bad year. Or else they would've given him a Cup contract, just like they did with everyone else that was still actually decent.

Came here to say something like this plus their pipeline has a couple of guys who might become middle 6 players but no stars on the horizon either.

At least not with the Panthers

Also, a guy like Reinhart knows what it's like to be stuck on a bad team. He's not just gonna chase the money. If the Panthers pay him fairly, he'll stick around .
Fringe benefits include practice facility only a golf cart ride away from home.

Playing on a competing team, quality of life and happiness are factors besides dollar amount, to varying degrees with each individual. We’ll see what unfolds with UFAs.
