Yeah I don't think they were the worst team in the playoffs, and judging Tampa on their regular season record is funny because they played a lot better than their late season stretch indicated which was a shocker to no one.
They massively choked one game, couldn't hold a lead in another. They were clearly a team that were tired from the long seasons.

I was actually more impressed by Toronto when they pushed a very good Tampa to 7 last year. I believe had they went through, Maple Leafs would have made the finals.
This year even against Tampa, I didn’t like the way Toronto was playing.

If the Leafs are moving anyone it should be Marner, not Nylander.

11M is alot for a smaller offensive winger that can't drive your team in the playoffs, they'll miss him in the regular season but they could get 2 good players with that $$$.

Nylander has been a pretty good opportunistic scorer for them & makes alot less. They should also get more in return for Marner.

Truthfully Toronto wasn't the same after they made all those trades at the deadline. For various reasons, a few of them being injury related, but really they just seemed to be slower and lost some chemistry in the line up.

Also does so with 1/3 the powerplay time.

And some others were chanting they wanted Boston.
The fans clearly have no clue about their own team, and cheering for Boston...example 2 of no attention span or clue. Its better when the fans have a clue.We are being bombarded with worthless stats..news..hype,and being given crap we dont want or like.
Its no wonder they dont even understand the game of hockey themselves;but should lol..come on !

I'm hearing this Matthews 14m+ thing in more places than HF.

There's actually a chance that Matthews asks to be the highest paid player in the NHL by a margin of 2m+?? Like, I can't even believe this would be a possibility for an already top heavy team that needs to be taking pay cuts right now since the core wants to stay in place.
Outsider looking in I think he takes 13x5 , 14-15 is just nonsense

Sayyys the Canucks fan?

Why didn't Washington get rid of Ovechkin and Backstrom when they were 25 years old?
Because they punted Green and Semin into outer space and then made a new core around the guys who didn’t fold when the big games started, added defense and new dynamic players like Oshie with more compete, and a noted defensive coach to mold the whole thing.

They basically made a complete shift in the way the organization drafted and approached the game so…. Good example?

My point is you don't give up on 25/26 year old players, not that you don't make any changes at all

The Leafs brought in Ryan O'Reilly, now a new coach and losing Tavares would go a long ways with Knies and Woll also improving.

They need a change in core
Doesn’t have to be your best player, but someone significant

I keep on hearing about getting rid of Tavares. I question how? The man has a NMC plus, if he DOES waive, who is going to take on that salary? I think Tavares is a Leaf until this contract expires.

Why do Leafs fans think that goal should have counted? Was a pretty obvious no goal.
It wasn't obvious at all. It took multiple replays and an explanation stating the nutral zone referee had blown his whistle.

It was obvious that they didn’t have a clear overhead view of the puck across the line that they could use to rule it a goal.

I saw many posted photos of that, but at the time replay was needed to determine whether it was a goal or not. It was not obvious that it was not a goal.

Well it expires in 2 years so that’s not exactly a long time

I’m talking about now, after the fact. It’s obvious. I talked to a couple of Leafs fans a few days after the loss and they both started with the same sentence “that was a goal though.” Like what lmao.

It amazes me that how a big chunk of the Toronto fan base can be easily pleased.
Changing the core that hasn’t failed to meet expectation year after year?
Nooooo, how can they possibly win that trade.
Looks like many of you guys are satisfied with being a paper tiger
Especially after they were just defeated by another team with a recent history of underachievement. And that team just traded Huberdeau and Weegar in the off season for Tkachuk and beat the Leafs.

Yeah there needs to be a serious shakeup, everyone should be on the table at this point.

I think if there was going to be a serious shakeup, it would have begun. Dubas and Keefe and probably Shanahan would have been fired by now.

It looks like they are all going to keep their jobs and anyone that thinks Dubas is the guy to be the architect of any kind of shakeup isn't really paying attention.

Next year's Leafs are going to have the same core, same coach and same GM.

At least one of the big four needs to go and the cap space should be allocated to improving the D and surrounding the remaining core players with tougher players who are willing to go to the dirty areas.
The narrative before this year was that the Leafs were close and if they could just get by a tough first round opponent they would go to the finals. But after getting beaten by Florida in 5 games it’s clear that they are nowhere close to a Cup team. Major change is needed.

Dubas' end season presser was interesting. He mentioned how some teams wait until late, like Florida and the Tkachuk trade didn't happen until deep into July. He said he was open to moving anyone if it gave the team a better chance to win the cup. Also firing the GM this close to the draft would probably ruin this draft class for us, you're throwing a new GM who doesn't have a whole lot of homework done on the class of 2023. I expect changes to at some point this summer.

If there isn't a serious shakeup I don't know how many regular season games I'll really watch. 7 years of the same issues now, we tried different coaches and still the same result (lack of effort/compete)

I don't think that's a real concern, and if their intention was to fire Dubas, they certainly wouldn't let him handle the draft before ultimately letting him go.

If he was fired the day after the playoffs, the Leafs would just name an interim General Manger, likely Pridham or Wickenheiser, who would then just defer to the Head of Scouting which is pretty much what the General Mangers do anyway.

I don't think Dubas is going anywhere unless he wants to leave.

What's so crazy about that

????
They only have 3 draft picks this year and I’m sure there’s already some consensus of who they want with their first round pick.
The draft shouldn’t impact the decision.
