People are giving the young guys passes that they're not giving Trouba...Miller has made a ton of gaffes and mistakes this season and at most people go "can't wait until he continues to grow and those don't happen anymore!"
Same with Jones and Schneider. Yes, I know you can hope the younger players will get better and we see Trouba as a finished product but I still think people are off base on their assessment of him and the rest of the defense.

He's fine for now and he's unlikely to take a nosedive off a cliff in terms of performance since his contract doesn't run through his later years

One is making $8M and is the Captain,.

The others are on ELC and 5+ years younger

Scoring woes are slightly concerning but nice to finally be on the other end of the shooting gallery every game.

The defense completely stymied Philly. Besides those late attempts by Hayes they really did not have many real scoring chances

I've never seen a player play so good and not be on PP1 in my entire life. Beyond frustrating.

Laf deserves to be on PP1 too.

Are we seriously going to have to wait 2 years for this to happen?

Will gallant look like a total genius if despite this Laf and Kak break out 5v5?

This is a little harsh but overall not wrong. My surprise naming him captain was I thought he was the easiest high salary player we could replace within. Maybe naming him captain makes him more attractive in the trade market? I’m not sure but was confused by the selection.
He is the captain because hes acted like one off the ice. We dont see that everyday. It was well deserved.

And yes, captains are more attractive in the trade market.

I personally dont think Trouba is a bad as some make him out to be. He provides a lot the other dmen dont, specifically in the physicality dept. He has struggled early on this season, but when he's on - and hell get it together sooner or later, hes very good.

Do you ever say anything that isn't complete hyperbole? Trouba has been bad. Its Game 11. Can we give the guy even a months worth of games before its becomes another one of your referendum's on what a poorly run organization we are? Its going to become real tired real fast if were already calling for him to be traded when we all know full well it ain't happening anytime soon.

I make statements with exactly as much unwarranted negativity as all the ones with unwarranted positivity extolling his virtues as a positive presence here, considering his cap hit.

It's like a counterbalance to the nauseating love fest and essays on his immovability that he receives. Oooh, look at all the big hits! Can't trade him because it's 1998 around here! ~fan boner~

Personally think we're playing pretty well. That was a dominating game last night, the puck just wouldn't go in.

Actually think we're going to put up a ton of wins at some points this year. Especially considering our depth is an issue, but Blais is finding his legs and Gauthier is a very useful player now.

So according to you he's not a positive presence? And joke all you want about fans loving the big hits but they directly led to us winning 3 playoffs games last spring.

He's not getting trade no matter how much you bitch about it all year.

The TKO of Crosby led to us winning that series but I'm not going to be pencilling in "hurting another team's star player," as someone's list of positive attributes. The Jarvis hit was of negligible value in that series as Carolina was already having trouble scoring and we were facing their backup goalie as well and it still came down to Game 7.

At $8m Trouba is a net negative. We could get a better or equal player PLUS MORE for what his salary is. You can't say "well we are cap compliant so don't worry about the cap," because the cap affects literally the day to day operations. If we had more money this offseason, we could have signed other players. We could trade for someone at the deadline. Etc. Cap implications are a mandatory part of the evaluation of a player's worth to a team.

Taking salary out of the equation Trouba is still rapidly declining in importance as we have tons of young defenders coming up through the ranks. Fox was always better, Miller has passed him, Jones and Schneider closing quickly. And for the difference in their salaries I will take Lindgren every day of the week.

He needs to be deployed less, and in less important situations, honestly, but because he's like the fourth highest paid player on the team he's treated like he's a Fox/Zibanejad/Panarin equivalent when he's really more like a Lindgren equivalent. But as such he's force fed to us and it is all the more frustrating.

He should not be captain because he should be on the short list to be moved for better value, but this team operates with a stone age mentality and will not make the right decision regarding him. Which is why he was named Captain, albeit foolishly.

A lot of this is clearly just your opinion but go off. I know your MO is to write off any good contributions as coincidental and focus on the bad as a fundamentally flawed decision that will haunt this team for years to come. Its a tired act.

It's not written off, just outweighed.

And yes it's my opinion, just like awarding him the captaincy was the team's (foolish) decision.

I'd care more if people weren't so handwavy about all the bad stuff I see Miller do out there

Don't get me wrong, I love Miller, but going by the eye test and same assessment as Trouba I don't think he's had a great start to the season.

I don't think Trouba is ever worth his contract but to me that's a different argument. In general, he plays fine and he is what he is. The team also needs some of the intangibles he brings on the back end come playoff time, as dumb as that can sound. He sets the tone for the defense and the team when he starts playing the hard nosed nasty game and to be quite honest you need that in the playoffs and no one else on the team does it the way he can.

If a chance to trade him comes along in the future I think that's fine, I'm not saying we have to love his contract, but he's not realyl hurting the team the way people are complaining he is.

That he's captain is almost completely separate from his actual play on the ice and I don't see the point of bringing that up

I was almost expecting a late goal or OTG by Hayes, just to f*** with us.

Honestly, I love Hank, but if he was in net in a game like this I THINK he wouldve let up a late one and it wouldve been a 0-1 loss.

Hart was very good, but also a little lucky. 4 times he was beat and saved by the post. Laf has to bury that one. He knows it.

In other news, Schneider is looking stronger every game. Man, he competes.
Fixed it for you...

We had 3 xG at even strength which is an absolute beating.

The Flyers had about 1.5 which is run of the mill.

The game looked lopsided and don't think 3.0-1.5 isn't lopsided. It absolutely is.
Well if you outshoot a team 2-1 like 40-20 or 30-15 it's seen a complete beatdown, I imagine it's the same for expected goals and the like.
