Considering Hughes track record (Dach and Newhook) he better keep the picks and draft someone.

If Hughes does end up trading one or both 1st round picks I really hope he trades for a more established NHL player than Dach or Newhook. Preferably a player with term so they don’t end up like Ottawa who traded high picks for DeBrincat and Chychrun and ended up having to trade them for a lot less a season later.

They would only trade for a player they know will be willing to stay with the Habs

I think Gorton/Hughes will aim to bring in someone that is RFA controlled. Will that happen at the TDL or near the draft. Time will tell. This is about what other teams offer and you always have to keep our options open.

Calgarys pick is top ten protected. Hence we’re hoping for 11th

At this stage, it's more closer to confirmed than hope. Flames have to play some really bad hockey to slip to 10 or worse at this point in time. Requires the Flames to play the worse hockey they have played in 3 years or more. Probability is very very low

traded for a better pick? Like the Hage pick.

2 pretty good 2nd rounders there as capital.
Any player or player(s) we draft outside the top 10 this year wont be contributing to our club for another 5 years minimum. Drafting is done, there is nothing more we can gain to "better" our team at the draft table.. instead, use all draft capital to target ACTUAL needs.

That does not happen. They may trade some of the draft choices to get a player(s) that are ready now but they won't trade it all. Maybe one of their 2025 1sts.

so we're getting calgarys pick unless they somehow tank and finish bottom 10?

what do the Nucks do, cause I don't see the Blues or Utah making the playoffs over them. Every 10 games they ave over 11 pts, so unless that # drops in half the rest of the way, it's going to be tough to lose too much ground depending on how the Nucks play the rest of the way as that looks like the only team that could knock them out of the playoffs.

I don't have faith in the Canucks, they are so pathetic and soft now after the Miller trade. Keeping that soft little overpaid turd Petterson, just brutal. Then they dump Desharnais, because.. why have an ounce of toughness?

5 years is an exaggeration.

2025 draft player can be ready by 2027-28, if top 15. 2 full years.

Like current Habs players drafted in the teens who played in D+3 … Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle, Newhook. Hage will as well. Hutson doing so as a 2nd rounder.

This draft is going to be interesting. If Bob M is right, there is a waive drop around 8 and then another from 15-20 range. Both our picks are on the cusp of both waives. Bob also said that the 2nd rounders in this draft are your usual 3rd rounders.

I think any team that has a pick 20 or under are going to protect it. Unless they feel Bob is wrong and there is talent to be taken from 20-60 range.

My gut says that if we make a trade, we are trading both 1st rounders to move closer to the 5-8 range. Habs pick may end up around 8-10 range anyways.

It really depends on the player. Subban played an important role in the playoffs of 2010 and that was only 3 years after being drafted even though he was only a 2nd round pick. Same for Guentzle played an important role in playoffs for the Pens in 2017 which was 4 years after the draft despite being only a 3rd round pick. There's a higher chance a top 10 pick will play a role 2-3 years after the draft but it doesn't mmean all 2nd and 3rd round pick will take 5+ years,

Yes, of course it depends on the player. Some never make the NHL.

The point was that declaring “at least 5 years” away for draftees picked 10-15th is an exaggeration when there are several examples under our nose that refute this.
