Go Blue Jackets?
Anybody But Edmonton

I found this to be one of the easier Flames teams to root for in a long time. And a (probably) 96 point season backs that up: they were a playoff team by normal definitions. Absolutely loved the vibes this year, and the results bear out the role that they play in elevating a team beyond paper.

We will always remember this as the year where we got almost zero help on the out of town scoreboard, and I think that given the result it is easy to look past the fact that the Flames stepped up at the most critical time of the year and delivered results like we rarely have seen.

The only difference between the feeling of the last few weeks and the feeling of cheering them on in the playoffs is the respect that comes league-wide with being one of the teams with the spotlight once the postseason starts. But other than that it was edge-of-your seat stuff with a lot of success to celebrate.

Can tie a record on Thursday if they're up for it.

The most points earned in the standings by a NHL team without reaching the playoffs is 96 points by the Boston Bruins (USA) during the 2014–2015 season, and equalled by the Florida Panthers in 2017-18 and the Montreal Canadiens in 2018-19.

All the OT losses of the top of my head sting. Vancouver, Anaheim, Edmonton, St. Louis (goalie interference), Vegas (fluke goal), Seattle, Boston. Lot of blown 3rd period leads in there.

It’s going to hurt seeing the Blues walk all over the Jets, I really wanted them in the first round.

The team environment is close to perfect as it gets. When Negative Francis is gushing positivity about the team you know there is something there. Conroy has a plan and sticking too it. This was year one. Let the guy cook.

Tons of positives. As a penguins fan who moved here and now lives in the City, it's really difficult not to cheer for this team and group of players. I took a lot of heat on the main boards before the season started saying the Flames would surprise people and be better than people expect. A ton of things to look forward to next season and let's hope players continue to approve while Conroy has the cap space to make a few moves. More scoring punch and upgrades on D will go a long way with this group, they have all the pieces if players continue to develop and improve.

That goal in St Louis where the player pushes the pad into the net to win it really comes to mind as a major blown call by officials after this season which did have major impacts on how the season actually ended.

I was definitely team tank for most of the year, when it became apparent that this team was going to push it was really easy getting behind these guys. If they win game 82, this will be the 4th most successful regular season in Calgary over the past 15 years. That's horrific and somehow not surprising at the same time.

I'm very interested in how Conroy approaches this offseason.
Does he look at 94/95/96 points and say 'If we could get 10 more goals, 3 more wins this year we were a playoff team'

Or does he look at 94/95/96 points and say 'by the grace of God, and the emergence of Dustin Wolf as a top 10 goalie in the league we are here, but we still have way too many holes, and a lot of our points came from losing in OT which isn't a sustainable model'

I'm really curious how he approaches the offseason, like does he swing for the fences at free agency, the draft or does he just stick to the plan, keep drafting, keep getting younger.

It sucks but we have to move on.

This team desperately needs top end talent and that is only in the top of the draft.

I would try to move Anderson, Coleman, Backlund and Kadri(if a team bites).

If one of the team that is supposed to win in the playoffs loses, than they may bite on Kadri.

Get a f*** ton of picks and try get high in the draft.

Yeah I think we need to clear out some guys now while their value is still reasonably high. We’ll still have enough vets to not go “full Buffalo” as some are worried. But we need to open two or three spots in our forward group

I tend to agree, but with the latter three it boils down to if they want to move unfortunately.

I think they would move on, if the Flames can make it happen.

Next year there will be a regression and the vets might not want to be part of it.

It's a fine line and will interesting to see how Conroy approaches it. He hasn't been moving assets for just picks, he's made good deals . But it would have to be a pretty big haul to move Kadri, he's a leader in the room and on the ice at this point I don't think it's worth it to disrupt the culture of the room that much.

Farabee, Bean, Pachel are players and positions I think need to be addressed. Ok players but if the Flames are going to add scoring players these are the players I would replace.

Kadri already nixed an Avs reunion guys.
It's not going to be as simple as 'we got a big haul, thanks for your services'.

Calgary simply won't be able to trade Kadri unless the team's wheels fall off and he's essentially like 'get me out of here'.

I think the easy ones are Rasmus, and Coleman. Coleman would be a very desired asset for most playoff teams, especially with retention. Rasmus has no trade protection so it'd just be a matter of 'we appreciate all you do, but we can't say no to this deal'.

I just don't see the point of Coleman, he would be desired but wouldn't get much more than picks and mid prospects back. Something which the Flames have a bunch of already, they have plenty of cap room so don't need the space, better to have him play out his contract and mentor the young guys. Having him in a lesser roll and on the 4th line would be ideal.

The only core piece with a chance of moving is Ras and that will depend on his contract demand. I think Backs signs another extension. Kadri has been very clear hes not moving. Coleman I dont think has move trade value than leadership value.

Bean and Pachal can just be waived. No one’s claiming them. And if someone picks them up, it’s one less thing to worry about.

Farabee can be groomed to be Coleman’s replacement.

I just meant Bean and Pachel are positions the Flames need to upgrade to move to the next level, not either player has to be replaced. Still good depth players.

Coleman is better than Farabee though. Flames need to find more point production in their top 6, pushing Coleman and/or Farabee down the depth chart.

What a year. Boys played their bags off.

Next year will be interesting to see what Craig does in the off season. Some spots need to be made available for sure

Think you keep Kadri and Weegar, can move on from some others

Hubby - Kadri - Scoranato
Zary - Frost - Klapka?
Farabee - Keirns - Rango
Lomberg - Backs - Pospisil
Stromgren

Paryek - Weegar
Bruz - Bahl
Pachal - ???

Wolf
Cooley

Should still have some cap space and be competitive.

Still can't process that loss vs Anaheim last week....

That point loss has killed us...

Also, how on Earth Minnesota found the way to beat Dallas, Canucks and Anaheim in OT is just mind blowing....
