Confirmed Signing with Link: [FLA] Panthers re-sign Reilly Smith (5 years, $5M AAV)

So safe to say this is Jagr's last year.... at least with Florida anyways...

He delivered in the first three playoff games, then got shutout in the next three games.

I guess he's still young, but after seeing him take a dip in Boston after his first 50-point campaign, I'm not really sure what to expect of him in the upcoming years.

I just don't think he's done enough to warrant this type of deal.

He had 51 points, down year playing on third line sometimes at got 40 points, then was great in florida and had 50 points. That's pretty good for a young player. He's a legit, top 6 two way winger

Where was Florida's money prior lol. They've added Yandle at nearly 7, Ekblad will be 7.5, Demers 4.5, Smith at 5, Trochek at 4.75, and Reimer at 3.4. Seems like they've spent alot recently.

Saving it for when the young core has demonstrated they can be built upon.

For this year:
Campbell was at 7.5
Guds and Kuli were almost 8 million combined
We had a lot of space to start with.
Some extensions kick in next year.

We're close to the cap now

This kind of feels bittersweet tbh.

What happens in 5-7 years when all of these guys are UFA?

I guess Tallon's expecting a cup by then. We'll certainly lose a least a couple of them.

As for Huberdeau I agree he's gonna be the toughest piece. He goes to arbitration too. I really hope we can lock him up long term though. He certainly came into his own in terms of goal scoring after the all star break after that embarrassing opening ~35 games with 4 goals.

Has he really done enough to warrant a 5v5 deal? This seems like a deal he would get if he was an UFA, not RFA.

I've loved all of Florida's moves this season, but this one is pretty questionable IMO.

This is a very prudent move, albeit definitely a slight gamble.

He was consistent all year long and played fantastic in the playoffs. Plus he has both speed, hands, and decent size. Factor in that he's 25 and playing with an even younger center who is definitely gonna get better and it's very hard to see Reilly Smith taking steps back.

He'll be a 25+ goal scorer for a long time with them.

Seems questionable to say the least. Hasn't proven enough to warrant a 5 by 5 deal especially when he's an Rfa. Reminds me a lot of the deal Anderson got from the leafs

I think the feeling is Smith can produce at 1st line going forward if Jagr leaves at years end or gets re-signed to a reduced role. He could probably score 30 if paired with Huberdeau and Barkov. Full of speed, 2 way play and a nice solid wrister. A little high I agree but I had him at 5 yrs for $4.5 mil per so I take this 5x5 and run.

Certainly credit to them for deciding on the guys they want on the team and moving to lock them up. There will certainly be some stability in that sense for a few years.

These long contracts they are giving to everyone is going to catch up to them soon. Either through underperformance or career altering injuries, this is a dangerous game they're playing.

How would you weed those underperformers and injury-prone players apart from the rest of 'em?

Caught quite a few Panthers games last season and I have to say that every time I saw them play Smith was pretty impressive. If he keeps playing on a level like he did this season, this contract would surely be worth it. The thing is it's just 1 season so who knows if he keeps it up next season.

Anyone questioning this deal didn't watch smith play or look at his stats.

Played the most shifts per game of any Panthers forward, including Barkov. 50 points and went off in the playoffs. He's very above average in his own zone, kills penalties and has a great shot. 5 million is super fair considering it's taking him to 30 years old.

Fair deal... he's played 3 full seasons and has a low of 40 pts... plus he kills penalties and is good defensively so even when he's not scoring he's contributing... but he shoukd be good for 25 goals a year and is a pretty safe signing considering everything else he brings to the table
