A lot wrong here...to start, Mike Matheson was far from a great player on the panthers. He wasn't as much as a whipping boy as much as he was just pretty bad.

Two, of course all players make mistakes, it's about frequency. MacKenzie Weegar has made more gaffes through his teams first 2 games than Victor Hedman, as one would expect, because he's not as good....

Weegar like Matheson looked fantastic before the league had the book on him. Now they do and he’s not looking the same as he did his first year or so playing top pairing minutes.

Just the way it goes with younger D.

Chiarot has looked steady. He's on a deep blue-line so not getting the minutes he had in Mtl. I was hoping he'd be a bit dirtier though. lol. several games still to play

Weegar getting the Mike Matheson treatment in Florida is hilarious.

Players playing top pairing minutes always get burned. Go watch Hedman..

He’s not getting the Matheson treatment from what I’ve seen, Matheson was terrible here, anyone that thinks Weegs is on that level is flat out wrong. Weegs is still growing in his position on the top pair and he’s had a few great seasons, he just needs to settle down in the playoffs, which he did a bit in game 2.

Chiarot and Montour have the best underlying numbers on the Panthers in the playoffs, but ultra sheltered, and like, two games isn't even a good sample for fancy stats. Caps aren't as deep as they used to be, and they're missing Wilson. Curious, assuming they make the second round, how those guys do against the winner of Leafs/Bolts. Deeper teams, harder to shelter against. Tbh, if I'm dressing defensemen I've gotta shelter, I'd probably prefer a Dermot type who can contribute on offense more. Not sure the point of a sheltered defensive defenseman, but we'll see how it works out. I think the trade was a mistake, but if I'm a Panthers fan I'm not fretting losing the 32nd overall pick right now anyway.

Chiarot and Montour got shit-hammered today even in limited sheltered minutes.

It’s kinda funny - both Habs fans and non-Habs fans were right.

Habs fans were right that they’d get a 1st and other stuff from some deadline-drunk GM.

Everybody else was right that he’s a pretty limited defender playing way above his pay grade in Montreal and now getting his lunch handed to him in third pairing minutes.

Also Weegar is definitely not the same player from 2020-21. More stupidness. He got drunk on his own highlights last year and has basically been a second pairing defender who tries to play like Cale Makar this season, which ends up badly. Win or lose, if I’m Florida I’m dealing him this off-season while he’s got a year left on his contract and while people mistakenly think he’s still a dependable top pair defender and worth whatever somebody is going to sign him to long-term next summer.

As posted, deeper than Habs
Sorry you said he’s on a deep blue line, not deeper than Montreal. I agree with the obvious part that it’s better than what Montreal was trotting out there, but they’re pretty bad overall

At least if Florida loses this series, we can laugh at the people who think getting grittier is what you need come playoffs.

Is that the case though? Washington are one of the grittiest teams in the East. Chiarot's not the reason their stars are combining for one goal while Ovy is crushing them. I would say a soft team like Colorado or Edmonton winning the cup would dispel that narrative more.

"Gritty" has to be team wide and to the core.

Last year Habs playoffs, in one sequence, Weber flattened a player on the right of Price, then a forward followed up with a shot, then Chiarot moved in to give some more drilling.

The player limped back to the bench.

Remember the post game interviews? The guys looked like they were in a bar fight.

Team wide, relentless. THAT is a "gritty team".

Chiarot was a big reason why the Habs went far in the series last year. He was a great shutdown pair with Weber, he delivered important hits that made a difference(Tavares). He was part of a great punishing D core with Weber, Edmunston, Kulak, Petry. Maybe he gave his all last year and has nothing more to give, who knows.

Weber carried him just like Buff did before that with the Jets.

They also got Giroux for cheap, same management...

It makes sense to mortgage your entire future before you run into cap hell next year, this is by far the best team Florida will have this decade. Shooting your shot and only getting Chiarot to show for it is underwhelming, Giroux wouldn't go anywhere but Florida so hard to give credit there.

You expect to get an impact player for a late 1st a year remove and a B prospect still in college? Imo chiarot caliber player is what you should expect come trade deadline.
