If he was playing with Vlasic wouldn't that mean he was playing on the top pair though? I don't think anyone is saying he is a top pair, nor is he getting paid like a UFA that is considered a top pairing D.

He played with Vlasic at times but no one had any idea what TMac was doing with the d-core during the '10'14 years. Most of the time he was benched or on the bottom pair. Vlasic makes anyone look good.

He's a #4 that got paid too much IMO. Dallas suited him well to boost his stock and I think he'll do well when he is insulated in Florida, but I don't think he is worth 4.5M.

I like the guy but I really soured on him when he completely fell apart towards the end of the '13-'14 season and in the playoffs. He then played terribly to start the '14-'15 season and everyone knew it was time to move on.

He will forever be remembered to me as the guy that gave Hertl the breakaway for his between the legs goal though. So I guess he's got that going for him.

shows how whacked out the contracts are in the nhl when a deal this bad is one of the top 5 best ones done over the past 2 days.

heaven help the nhl the day the players get sick and tired of losing 15% of their paychecks with this artificial escrow clause paying the true cap number.

when you realize that the true nhl revenues are falling over 10 million short of the fake projections every year and then imagine a world where the cap falls 10 million to be more truthfully projected... a contract like this will be an absolute nightmare.

honestly... like tv and singing and even painting or writing, I don't really care how much a 'star' can convince people to pay them for entertainment. if someone is a star and they can convince people to buy tickets... all the more power to them. stars in the nhl could be paid 100 million dollars a year and I wouldn't care if the economics supported it.

its when you start paying 4/5 depth dmen 4.5 million because there are no other 4/5 depth dmen available that shows the apocalypse is approaching. I mean theres a lot of worst contracts handed out this year so my rant really could be placed in several different threads here. but it applies here too and here is where I reach my breaking point.

and all this... 'someone has to get paid' garbage makes me sick too.

if pro sports was paying their own bills than fine... okay... but when pro sports continues to come to us tax payers complaining they need a new arena to stay competitive... or a casino licence... a lottery... tax breaks... etc etc etc... then THEY ARENT PAYING THESE SALARIES THEMSELVES!!! salaries like this are being taken directly from the tax payer pockets.

I don't mind some support for the arts and entertainment... but there is no way you can tell me that a hockey player NEEDS 4.5 mill to ply his trade. If the NHL was NOT taking tax payer dollars to prop up its artificial economic accounting system than I wouldn't care less how much money they wanted to spit with the players. BUT THEY ARE taking tax payer dollars so I do have a right to freak when these deals get more and more ridiculous every day.

odds on demers being a buyout before his deal is complete... I peg it at 75%

I'm willing to have someone dig up this post and throw it in my face if I'm wrong but I say that because I'm right more than 75% of the time when I predict buyout targets.

theres been a few of them handed out for sure the last couple days

hes a clear #4, meaning he's a comfortable 2nd liner. a top-4 right shot d getting 4.5per seems pretty fair to me, especially on the open market, thats the value these days, and 5yrs is a reasonable/comfortable length contract for someone who's 28. not to mention, even though we have ekblad and yandle locked up at big money, we have matheson cost controlled for a little while longer, pysyk and petrovic don't make much, we had room to add a medium sized contract to complete the last spot and we did, gives us 2 legit d lines and a legit top-4 throughout, so I'm pretty happy with it.

weird how the guy from edmonton is ranting about demer's contract when edmonton was believed to be a spot for him....hrmmm

Another decent signing for Florida IMO. Think they're gearing up to be a contender for next year.

I know Yandle and Demeres are the difference between 1 playoff birth in the past 10 years and Stanley cup. Better lay that money in Vegas before they figure it out.

I hope you realize that all those players have their income taxed at the highest rate, live in huge houses with the highest property tax, buy lots of expensive stuff with sales tax, and typically donate lots of time and money back to that very community supporting their salary.

The Panthers have actually made the playoffs twice in the last 10 years. I guess all those tears in your eyes (most likely coming from watching players choose to play in Florida over a team in Canada) blurred your vision

And it sounds better when saying twice in the last 5 years.

Its true and doesn't hit you right in the feels. LOL.

And still better than most Canadian teams.

It's not like they don't have room to improve within their roster.

I hear what you're saying.....But the most volatile of contracts are the ones between 4.5m and 5.5m....

What he's trying to say is that, eventually in a couple years this could end up being a ****** contract vs value.

My argument for that is that this always happens in FA....

You do realize he's a Bruins fan, right?

I'd say this is a bit of an overpay for a Dman I see as a #4 at best, but better suited as a #5 on a 3rd pairing. I don't think this contract will be looked at as really working out, but that's just my prediction. I think I've seen him play enough to say that with confidence, but who knows; anything can happen.

I'm so excited for Florida fans. You could tell by excellent drafting that the Southern teams (Carolina, Tampa, Florida) will become great teams, Canes eventually.

Good on management to spend to build a solid defense core for the longterm.
