Actually Jones is a terrific skater.

He's been dinged on his skating agility by many people, and having watched him (I said in the TDL thread I didn't like him), I tend to agree. But again, that will not be as much of a factor here, as this was also a huge knock on Mikkola and is obviously a problem with Ekblad.

Anyway, I just hope this trade works out better than Chiarot, that's all I'm saying. I'm not trying to be a downer here, I'm legitimately hopeful and looking forward to how this pans out. I just won't pretend I liked Jones before the deadline, because I didn't, and said as much.

Good news, I'm often wrong.

This might be my heart talking but I believe the kid will be a great #1. He was trending upward all year.

I agree, I actually think this will fastrack his development into a great starter.

Well, agility is always a problem for bigger players, but as for big D, I'd say he's the most agile in the league. I can't agree with your assessment. I mean is he Hughes, Makar, etc ? No, but he doesn't have to be. He's got range and is very skilled.

Knight looked to me like he turned the corner. Changed my opinion on him, I think he'll be good.

As long as Zito keeps getting value out of the picks he does have, I don't think losing late first rounders is that bad. Would I like to keep those picks? Yes, of course. But Samo and Sourdif are both developing nicely, and as long as they can keep a steady trickle of those guys coming in, this team is in great shape.

Was talking with my brother @CatscratchFever . He mentioned how we used to suck and stock up first round picks like candy. Remember those days? I do. Now look. We're winning, we're champs, and yall whining about late first round draft picks. This is NOT the panthers of old. This is what a championship and contending team does.
Yeah I don’t care about first round picks like I did back in our dark ages. When they help net you players like Chucky and Reino who are probably far better than the kid you would have drafted ends up being, forget about it.

Not too worried about Jones’ agility (if that’s his weakness). Let him work with Max Ivanov for a bit and he’ll be fine. Look at us now, our team agility is outstanding.

Our defense will need a bit of a youth injection in a year or so. Average age on our backend is over 30.
Yeah I'm more 'worried' about our long term defensive depth than I am about goalie depth.

If we could somehow pry Dobson away from NYI that would be fantastic. Offer 2026 1st plus whatever non-roster prospects needed to get it done. LTIR Tkachuk and bring him back by the playoffs.

I assume you guys expect your GM to make another trade with 2026 1st because the conditions of this trade are a bit odd with regard to year of 1st round pick

Not that I am complaining as Hawks are well stocked with picks at moment no matter if the 2026 conditional pick slides to 2027

Davidson has since taking over as GM already made 8 1st round selections

2022 = D Kevin Korchinski (7th), C Frank Nazar (13th) and D Sam Rinzel (25th)
2023 = C Connor Bedard (1st) and C Oliver Moore (19th)
2024 = D Artyom Levshunov (2nd), C Sacha Boisvert (18th) and LW Marek Vanacker (27th)

Hawks can either continue to stock cupboards or maybe start to utilize these future picks as trade chips to improve roster this coming offseason and beyond

Now when I have had time to analyze this trade, I don't see it as negatively as this morning when I heard about it.

Zito's point of view can be that he believes that Bob can play at a high level as long as the window for Panthers to win cups is open. After that it doesn't matter who they have because they'll suck anyway. It's also possible that they don't think that Spencer has a needed winner mentality and it's also possible that they think that Kirill Gerasimyuk could become the new starter. Maybe Bob could be a mentor for Kirill. As a backup Knight earns too much and when he had trade value, it was easier to let him go.

Knight, on the other hand, might have wanted to play more. Chicago has a young team, most players are just like him on their way to the peak, which means that he can get experience, a lot of games but have little pressure at the moment. That might be something what he wanted after those mental issues. We also don't know how the chemistry was in Florida, did he fit in the team or not.

All in all, this trade has potential for being a win for everyone but it can escalate quickly if Bob gets injured.

I'm a bit worried about what this means about our cap situation next year - can we still keep Ekblad and Bennett? Will this make negotiations easier or harder, particularly with Ekblad? I can't imagine the Panthers without him, as flawed as he sometimes can be...
I'm sure that Bennett will stay. Cap goes up by $7.5m, which means that there is ca. 20 millions for Bennett, Ek, Mackie, Boqvist and a back up goalie. If Ek accepts something what is not over the moon (like Forsling did), he might stay but it's also possible that he goes after a bigger paycheck.

Btw according to Puckpedia Matthew is in LTIR which means that Zito is not done yet. Something will happen before Friday.

You forgot 4C (please no Nosek again) and Schmidt (or replacement). By my count that would give us 22/23 roster slots filled-13 forwards, 7 blueline, two goalies.

So, it's going to be tight again. Next season is the last with Bob's huge salary though so there is some breathing room after that.

Re: that post a couple pages back about why didn't Florida just trade Knight during the summer and bring back Montour, Knight had no value at his cap hit coming into this year. His solid season is why he became a moveable piece.
