You guys are my favourite to come out of the East now. That D went from an issue to very good. He will replace what you lost with Montour and OEL. Great insurance for Ekblad leaving this summer, and arguably an upgrade on him imo.

He has been on a tire fire for 5 years with CBJ last year, the year Tortz had lost the team and everyone wanted out. Then walked into a hot mess in Chicago with a 10 game winless streak, a scandal, the coach and GM both canned in the first month and the eventual rebuild before his contract extension had even started.

The Hawks haven’t had a competent coach since Q and have had 4 first time head coaches including two interims. He’s seen 4 coaches in 4 years. He’s played with stalwarts such as washed up Martinez and De Haan, Maatta and some kids. Our best young D Vlasic has manned his own pair and they rarely played together.

It has become fashionable to shit on Seth since that big contract which he was over paid about 1-1.5 million at the time of the deal imo. With the cap going up and the retention it’s a no brainer at 7 million. Seth has clearly been checked out at times over the past couple years but when he has been engaged (there was a month stretch before First Nations) he still is a top pair D.

I had a theory on the Hawks board at the time that he must have gone to Kyle and talked about a trade and that Kyle was receptive to the deal. All of a sudden he seemed lighter in interviews, happier and playing a lot better. During that period he was looking like a legit number one. His points over that span were over a PPG I believe. He was clearly auditioning, Kyle must have told him that he needed to play at another level to be traded with that ticket.

The immediate feeling will be good, because with Bob in net and Jones added to our defense, we’ll look like we’re primed up for another deep run. But on the flip side, if Bob gets banged up, we are so unbelievably f***ed.

I’m glad they addressed the serious need, but now we have another hole to address.

I guess the likely targets are Quick or Vanecek.

Also, jones is 7th amongst all right handed D in the league in points per game. Hes also top-10 in goals among righties.

Okay, I've said I'd be okay with trading Knight for a great return, but this isn't a great return.

I think Seth Jones SUCKS.
Glas someone said it tbh (even if I wouldnt go that far).

His stats are good on paper but there's a reason Jones has been a whipping boy since joining Chicago and most Hawks fans are glad he's gone.

Let's just hope it had more to do with him being mentally checked out in Chicago.

there was a point in history where Werenski-Jones were the best D pairing in the entire NHL. Like Toews-Makar tier.

Forsling-Jones could replicate some of that dynamic. And Jones has played in front Bob before too.

Now can I interest you in a Daniel Vladar?

Vladar is too expensive. I can't see Calgary parting with him for less than a 2nd.

Frank Seravilli said we can still trade the 2026 first…..

How? There's conditions on it, I don't see how it's possible.

I think they can do a conditional 2026 first that slides to 2028 clause and it bypasses that. But everyone just keeps saying if they have the first. It’s kinda like the crazy conditions we had with the Ben Chiarot, Claude Giroux, Matthew Tkachuk trifecta of firsts

Something like If the Calgary pick slides to 2026, then the 2025 first we now own belongs to the team we are trading with now. Then the Seth Jones pick goes to 2027

So 2028 doesn’t even need to be touched

we won’t finish top 10 so then

Calgary 2025
Other team 2026
Chicago 2027

1he first second after reading this, I was in complete shock. When I read though that CHI keeps 25% of the salary OVER ALL THE REMAINING CONTRACT YEARS I was absolutely fine with this.

He will be great for us, since he won't have the pressure to be a first-pairing Dman for the very first time in his career. He could feast on the other teams together with the Albatross

Even if they have kept 50% this trade sucks cause jones is a yandle level D. Way worse than balinskis.

Future of the net shouldn’t be a massive concern right now. From today to offseason -26 the cap should be up 15 million, Bob’s 10M contract will be off the books. Zito can basically go after any goalie he prefers next year

The window for winning for Panthers is the next 2, 3, 4 years and Jones gives them a better chance than Knight for the next 2 years

Give yourself the best chance to win now, -26 and buy any goalie they want with the cap space

What a shock first thing on a Sunday morning... From a sentimental perspective, I really liked Knight and his mental health journey, and thought he was doing well. And hadn't heard a lot of recent good about Jones - either his talent or his drive/personality.

But yeah, reading a lot of the comments here has made me feel a lot better, and the trade does made a lot of sense. It does feel like a a high risk/high reward type deal so cross fingers it's the latter and Seth Jones actually performs for us. If we manage to repeat this year, it would have all been worth it, obvs.

I'm a bit worried about what this means about our cap situation next year - can we still keep Ekblad and Bennett? Will this make negotiations easier or harder, particularly with Ekblad? I can't imagine the Panthers without him, as flawed as he sometimes can be...

I don't think that this is a high risk move at all since Jones is a know commodity to Zito. Many will probably argue that his Hawks career is indicative of what we should expect out of him but I think that ppl will be totally fine with him if he plays like Ekky without his skating looking like he's treading water.

Can't see Ekblad coming back with Jones in fold for the next five seasons and Ekblad probably wants to cash in with cap going up. I'm mildly excited about this development since now Forsling doesn't have to break his back with carrying Ekblad constantly.

You're probably right. I'm too sentimental about players - I'd be a terrible GM!!

So, they finally traded knight, you say?

View attachment 985116

I’m more surprised that they’d retain 25% with 5yrs remaining on that deal and not even having to give up Samoskevich OR our ‘26 1st rounder. Sounds like we have the freedom to trade that one still if we want to if I’m reading the details correct.

The good thing about jones too over say someone like Karlsson is 1) his age 2) he’s got size and strength 3) can still score goals and produce, helping to fill the void that montour left 4) locked in for another 5yrs at a better cap hit 5) IF Ekblad doesn’t re-sign, we have someone who can feasibly fill his shoes on the top pairing alongside Forsling. I certainly wouldn’t want Karlsson on my 1st pairing. 2nd pairing sure, but we had no backup plan in case we can’t keep Ekblad

I’m very happy with this deal especially given the retention. I still believe, including this upcoming run, that bob has 3-4 more runs in him of solid play and we’ll cross that bridge when we eventually get there. I never liked the idea of shoehorning knight in if bob was still playing at a respectable level. Spend that cap space elsewhere, you’re taking a bigger gamble holding on and hoping he pans out vs moving him, ride bob for several more years, and use the cap space on the roster
It could not unconditionally include the 2026 pick as it is possible that that pick could go to Calgary if the 2025 pick is a bottom 10 pick. Since it’s almost inconceivably not going to be a bottom 10 pick, the 2026 will be Chicago’s.

Remembering everyone saying we got totally fleeced with the tkachuk trade, and all of zitos past moves ill hold on from overeacting.

But man i see both sides and cant decide on this trade

I feel like goalies are easily replaceable

Out of 1C’s, 1D’s, 1G’s goalies are easily the easiest to replace

Lot of people all over social media are screaming about Bob’s age and what they’ll have in 25-26 in net, while at the same time forgetting that if Bobs contract goes off the books with 10M that alone opens them to spend 10M on a much much younger goalie if they so choose to

All of Barkov, Tkachuk, Forsling, Reinhart, Verhaeghe, Jones, Lundell are locked up longterm. They won’t have problems finding someone to want play goalie for them and pay

Hate this trade. Despise it. There's a reason ~90% of the non-Cats/Hawks fans think we lost it, badly.

It hasn't been talked about much in this thread but the lost 2026 first rounder is going to hurt. That draft is really deep and we just mortgaged more of our future.

This is on Zito. Monty left for $7.14M vs we're on the hook for $7M with Jones. (I realize the term is longer) Giving away Knight last offseason, even attaching a low level pick to entice someone, would have netted us (no pun intended) the same basic result and allowed us to keep our pick and Brandon.

I know there's no guarantee someone would have taken Spencer but if so, that's on Zito as well. He's the one who extended #30 for a ridiculously overmarket amount. This trade is the culmination of several bad decisions. I don't expect any GM to be 100% right but this series of choices has hurt the franchise.

I hope I'm wrong in the long term.

I think it's a win-win for both sides. Zito makes trades that fit for both sides, not just having a winner and a loser, which is why I think he can keep doing it. Have to give to get and recognize time value.

Chicago clears $7M in cap, get a potentially future starter, and a potential mid-line player by 2030 (essentially what a late-1st 2026 gets you).

We get a borderline RD1 at a very reasonable cap hit you address our biggest need and boost our Cup chances considerably for our competitive window now.

what the f*** is this

who is our goalie after bob?
Like I said in the draft thread, our should've been 2x Conn Smythe winner is 36 years old! If healthy, he's good for another 4-5 years at least, and he doesn't leave Florida, and he's not gonna cost $10 million. It was unfair to overpay a kid...sorry, he's a *man* now ffs, to waste his career while be should be trying to make his way to the Hall. He's still people.

Do we really care about the 32nd overall draft pick?

Now my friends, we just got Seth Jones, who is now not only playing for a true contender for the very first time, he's now playing for the Champs. And when he wants to, he plays like a real son of a wonderful lady (I'll never slander Mrs. Jones, I forgot for a second she wasn't my mom when I met them at Caleb's draft).

You thought Reinhart had a glow up?

As always, In Zito I Trust, as should the rest of ya by now!!

Chicago as in 31st in the league Chicago?

He's gonna be pouring champagne on my face from the Stanley Cup at the Elbo Room in a couple months.
