I think he's a pure rental: I don't think we'd want him/could afford him and he'll most probably resign with Boston in the summer. I think the reason he was so cheap for us was because the Bruins gave him the courtesy of choosing the destination, which doens't point to a complete breakdown in the relationship.

To be honest, I'm still shaking my head in shock. God, to be a fly on the wall in that locker room when he walks in the first time... I suppose he already knows Greer and Nosek, and obviously Bennett and Reinhart from the 4 nations. But man, it would be strange. Or maybe not!
 
I think Zito doesn’t want him to be a rental but the biggest factor is how the playoffs are for him. If he shines then his value goes up and we may lose him to … Detroit or something. But fundamentally I think Zito intends to keep him for 3 more years. Zito wants a Cup this season, and the following 3 as well.

I think this is the take.

What is being said by GMs across the league is pretty clear. The teams that are in windows want to maximize while in it and will do what it takes to do so.

If Marchand comes in and is a substantial benefit, Zito is going to do everything he can to keep him.

I think we see Ekblad go.

I wouldn't be surprised if BM only plays like ~11 games in the playoffs so that Zito doesn't have to relinquish their 2018 1st round pick to the Broons. That "50% of games played in the playoffs"-condition is a bit different from the usual "wins first/second round of the playoffs" or "wins the Cup"-conditions.

Watching TB-BOS game and Emily Kaplan said BOS did have a 3 year deal on the table for Marchand but AAV wasn't there.
When talks failed, Brad wanted to stay on East coast for family reasons but Thornton and Campbell had some influence in him picking Florida
 
Oh yeah one more thing. Jon Cooper thought he was the sneaky 3D chess playing mastermind by putting Benny and Marchy on the ice together.

we're all speculating here as zito has not said anything on the subject of marchy beyond this year but in my opinion, that's not going to happen. i don't think we can or should pay him what he wants but even if we could, i don't think the long-term fit is there. i love the guy and think he's going to juice the room and if healthy probably chip in a few goals (imagine him opposite jones on PP2...) but i think he's a better fit for the next few years in a place that could use his experience and voice in the room and would pay him well for that. maybe the flyers or rangers? canes but they're too cheap.

Some rumour was Boston was absolutely lowballing him, 2x3M

He wanted atleast another season then or more money at that term

3x3 so could get it done
