Fixing The Power Play...

Holy shit it took Berube like 3 games to be undisputedly better than Keefe's entire tenure.

Not anymore! Weird feeling having a good coach.
Really? I still see a more or less stacked PP 1. Does JT move down to the second unit? I am glad Rielly is off of PP1 though.

Anyone can do what Rielly did on the PP…pass the puck to the right board, pass the puck to the left board, shoot into shin pads, occasionally get a muffin shot through…repeat. No creativity, no good shot.

I think OEL and Knies are both positive adds.

I would think about putting Matthews back on his strong side for the catch-and-release shot.

Him and Willy were both good for that in there rookie year and second year

My overly simple solution is that once they set up in the offensives zone, every time Auston gets the puck he shoots it.

And to help that out, tell him to stay above the faceoff circle and off the wall, basically an Ovechkin-like "office". Everyone else move around the perimeter up high & down low to pull the defenders away from him, then find him, get him the puck quick and let him fire away.

It's reasonable, but the issue isn't once they are setup imo, it is the entries. Even tonight when they scored 2 on the PP, the entries were a mess.

We saw tonight as well, the puck movement in the offensive zone was different that what we have seen in the past. Quicker, more direct. OEL helps with that, and we know the others can do it as well.

I mean, really, even if the PP is good during the season, it's not going to matter unless it carries over to the playoffs... so I want them to develop multiple entries, multiple motions off the faceoffs. Then, if something is taken away, they can easily shift... maybe they have that already, but they sure as hell do not show it.

Reilly is more of a surprise 4th forward on the rush. OEL will eat his lunch on p.p due to his experience.

Power play has been performing better lately but I still think they should change it up.

If they're gonna continue using primarily one unit they should be switching personnel on a regular basis. Not using the power play as a reward hurts the team. It's an inspirational tool for players when they think actually have a shot at earning those premium minutes.

When you always keep the same five guys on it the motivational factor is no longer available.

But the Leafs also have the firepower to run two equally capable units. Split up the talent and run with the hot hand any given night. Makes it harder for the other team to defend against as well.

The same guys doing the same thing every time gets you the same not good enough in the playoffs result.

Is the objective to sell jersey's or win the cup. Because padding the stars stats by sending them out for a minute and a half every power play is conducive to the former moreso than the latter. If they want to be successful when it matter most they should be looking at alternatives to the five forward experiment.

The fact Marner is quarterbacking the damn thing because there's no where else to put him is a sign something's not right.
