Toronto's PP continues to underperform, and it is getting very frustrating. The PP basically cost the team that series against BOS and has yet to score a goal this season in three games. A fix is needed. When the Leafs received their last PP tonight, my first thought was, "well, at least this will kill two minutes." They have the kind of personnel that can do major damage and they've had a good PP with the current core at times in the past. What should be done to improve the Power Play?

I mean if you watched the last powerplay, you have 4 guys (Matthews, Marner, Nylander, OEL) basically begging to be on the outside and have the puck on their stick

You cannot have everyone crowded on the outside playing cute hockey. They should split the stars up and run them 1 minute each. Get guys who will compliment the stars by sitting in the bumper and near the net

Well for starters OEL is going to be replacing Rielly soon, that's gonna be a good starting point.
Yep looked immediately better. Marner is becoming a problem as well, they keep running it through him but Willy is a better zone entry option and he's also not a threat to shoot ever and all he does is defer it to Matthews and Willy. If he was at least setting them up for one timers I wouldn't mind him so much but he's not even doing that, he'll just go in a circle before doing a short pass off or force a pass that gets deflected or intercepted. For someone who was praised so much for his creativity and vision I sure as f*** haven't seen that on the PP for quite some time now.

It was very clear that the PP accomplished more with OEL and Berube started the 3rd with OEL in Rielly's place. This after seeing a brutal first and putting Domi on the second line for the second period. Adjustments that got us a win.

Patches in Tavares place on PP 1. No..

I don’t get why we can’t build the powerplay around Matthews shot like Washington did for all those years with Ovi. We have better complementary playmakers than Washington had, with all due deference and respect to Backstrom.

the difference is that Caps also had a point shot in Carlson, a heavy shot in Oshie

Ovi-Backstrom-Oshie-Carlson were the main guys they kept changing the screen

Tampa for instance had solid shots in

Stamkos-Kucherov-Point-Hedman-changing screens every year

Leafs have shot only with Matthews and Nylander so it becomes easier to defend. Hopefully OEL gets on the top unit to have a 3rd man with a shot to keep the opposition PK honest

I don't think you need to fix it yet, it came REALLY close to breaking through last night, I think you give it 1 more game, if it doesn't break through against LA then you fix the PP.

But I think both the PP and Matthews break through against LA.

They both came VERY close against Pittsburgh, the dam is about to break.

The general idea for 'fixing it' is getting both JT and Rielly off it.

Last night JT was gone, and it was looking better. After they replaced Rielly with OEL it was even better.

The problem with the PP isn’t just the point shot (but it’s a start), they just don’t move the puck fast enough. The opposing pkers are barely moving out there at times because our guns are slowing down the play looking for that perfect play. If we start moving the puck fast opponents will be forced out of position, creating our openings.

It will take some time, but this appears to just be old habits that need to be broken.

The reason people say replace JT on it is because they hate JT.

Thing is when he was replaced with Pacioretty, as much as I've liked Pacioretty holy shit did that not work.

One of the reasons you have JT on the PP is because you need to win faceoffs and having both Matthews and JT on the PP gives you a better chance of winning the faceoff.

If you wanted to replace Rielly with OEL that's a change I'd look at but I'd want the 2 centers on the ice for faceoff purposes.

The truth is the real reason the PP is "struggling" and It's been 3 games so I use that term VERY loosely is because Matthews isn't scoring, the two go hand in hand.

I'm WAY more concerned about the PK, and I'm not even overly concerned about that because again It's been 3 games.

But they have given up 3 PP goals, IF there is an area of concern after 3 games that would be it
because the 3 PP goals they have given up represent 60% of the goals they have given up.

But again It's 3 games there are no real concerning stats yet.

Yeah, you watch teams like TB, Colorado, Edmonton and the speed and movement of their power play is night and day compared to ours.

have matthews and nylander even shot 3 shots on the pp?

i swear they never shoot the damn puck, and always stand up so high.

Our two most dangerous shots barely get the puck on net from good spots
