If fitness has been left as far behind as this thread, we're in trouble. Found it on page-5.

I'm still soldiering on with the outdoor running, though not as far or as often. Some days are fine, others, like today, are brutal. It's -11c out there, not counting the windchill. Brutal on my face. Did 4.5k, though I stopped timing myself, since there's no point when part of it's on ice and snow. Man, it feels good to be finished for the day.

With so many people having bought home equipment, I wonder what the gym business will look like when things reopen.

I think people will still go to the gym because it's an activity. You get out of your home and get into training conducive environment. I got used to doing small workouts at home but it's still shit, I do them because it's so important but it's not fun. So I'll definitely head back obviously.
The every day joe though, I'm sure some won't go.

I know in the states there's a company that is booming with building tiny private studios they rent out. I think it's 20-30$/hour, only one person can go in at same time. I'm not sure if it would work here though, it's a steep price and not too many people like to spend this much.

Gym franchises in Montreal are marketing themselves at $11/month; hopefully that's cheap enough to bring back customers. And like you said, after being cooped up at home maybe people will be dying to go somewhere else. A good idea would be to add smoothie bars or cafes to gyms that have the space, to give people another reason to hang out there. Whatever they do, it's going to be tough for them at first. Customers won't be swarming back just because they're open. Like restaurants, when you've been associated with a health risk for a year, it takes awhile to regain confidence. What a shame...

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully all you need is rest.
Ive been resting for a month now, ill start some rehab work. Really sucks as I was finally peaked to lift that god damn 600 lbs dl Ive been chasing for like 3 years.

Anything over 60ish percent is a hell of a grind on my back. Today Im doing some deficit deadlift @350 lbs and it feels fine, hopefully thats a good sign.

I am not sure what happened exactly but my health has taken a serious turn for the worse over the last year. I have always suffered from issues with digestion (was told it was IBS) but for the most part, it was just uncomfortable bathroom stuff and occasional stomach pain. But very manageable. I had extensive testing done and they said there was nothing to worry about, just try to avoid foods that make it worse.

A few years ago I developed a disorder with swallowing and ultimately lost function of my esophagus. I lost 30 lbs in a few weeks and was hospitalized, and had surgery to correct the issue. I can eat again and things were just fine for me. However I was put on strong prescription antacid medication (PPIs) due to the surgery, even though I never had heartburn issues normally. But the surgery I had requires it. They kept putting me on stronger PPIs and the most recent one, I think, has completely destroyed my health.

My IBS symptoms from before that were just occasionally inconvenient have become severe and borderline debilitating. I am always sick. I have no more energy. My body no longer tolerates any food well except maybe yogurt. I made the connection after about 6 months with the new PPI medication they had switched me to and always had it in the back of my head as a potential cause.

Finally after a year of suffering I asked my doctor if I could try going off them, as I was not experiencing very much heartburn at all. She said I could try to slowly take less. I planned to begin taking them every other day at first, but there was a snafu at the pharmacy and I went 4 days without taking it. I had some of the most painful heartburn in my whole life, and I got EXTREMELY sick. Like the worst IBS symptoms I have ever had. The heartburn has since stabilized but the increased IBS issues are slower to return to normal.

I have seen a gastroenterologist and she was dismissive of me and did not even let me explain some of my more alarming symptoms. Told me to take her recommended probiotics which I have done for months with no change (it is worse, if anything). Today I am having a full scope done (fun!) to investigate and hopefully rule out some of the more serious issues like cancer. It is causing me a lot of stress, but I had this test done 6 or 7 years ago thankfully, and it came back clean. I am in so much pain lately that it is hard to move around comfortably.

At this point, coupled with the pandemic, I am feeling quite hopeless. I don't know what to do, nothing seems to help and the doctor I have been referred to is so dismissive of me. I could tell she was going to be bad, she came and yelled at the receptionist 3 times while I was in the waiting room for various reasons. Going in I already know she was rushed, in a bad mood and did not want to be there. And I waited a long time to get this appointment too.

I am strongly considering exploring naturopathy at this point. I have friends with serious gut issues like IBS and Crohn's who have benefited greatly from some of the nutrition plans and routines suggested by naturopath specialists. I normally don't buy into that hippy dippy crap at all but at this point I am desperate. I just want to be able to work out again but my entire body just hurts, it is hard to even go up and down stairs in the last month.

Sorry, I am just ranting here. Pretty sure my family is sick of hearing about this so I need to let it out somehow.

How did the scope go?

Really sorry to hear you're going through such a tough time. If you do go to a naturopath, go up the ladder and find a naturopathic doctor with actual medical education. I got to know two very well through business -- there's nothing flaky about it. The two ladies I knew were grounded in dietary & nutritional science and mapped out a program that worked with whatever meds you're on. It's nothing like homeopathy, which basically sells you very expensive water.

My wife has IBS and diverticulosis. She went to a ND a few years back and got good results but didn't maintain the regimen.

Totally agree, naturopathy has a very underserved bad rep. It's unfortunate that the training is highly variable, though, like osteopathy. They need more regulation.

Anyways, I work with and follow a few naturopaths and they have A LOT of knowledge and there's nothing "hippy dippy" about it.

Functional medicine, which is close to it, it actually very well developed and recognized in the USA.

That sucks mate, gotta be frustrating. Ya, I'd suggest looking into alternative ways of eating. Nutrition could be all the medicine you need.

Nice to hear Montrealers are embracing winter biking... much respect although I don't have the guts.

Winter cycling gains momentum in Montreal | Montreal Gazette
The bicycle is one of man's greatest inventions, and it's awesome to see more North Americans embracing it.

I used my bike as my primary means of transport for a good 7 years, including winters. I also worked as a bike messenger for a little while back in the day. I need a car now because I live in the city, but work at different locations around the island and in the south shore that aren't really accessibly by bike, but I sorely miss those days. I felt more free, mobile and self-sufficient than I do with a car. I was my own mechanic, got exercise on my commutes, never needed to worry about parking and my gas and food were essentially on the same budget.

Thanks guys. The test went well, but my gut is out of whack. I need to cut back on certain foods for a while including basically every vegetable we cook with regularly at home. And all my favorite fruits. Thankfully not forever.

What is the reasoning for that?

Basically it is the gut bacteria that is imbalanced. Chronic antacid medication has allowed certain bacteria to thrive, and some foods like onions, cauliflower, apples, etc... feed it more than others and maintain the imbalance.

So if you can't eat those then you can take supplements?

What recommended diet did they give you?

It is called a low FODMAP diet. Things I need to cut out for a while include garlic, onions, cauliflower, many kinds of fruits like apples, pears, mangoes... many kinds of dairy, beans, some legumes like lentils. Many kinds of wheats and nuts.

But, it's not all bad. One of the main things I eat daily is salad, and I can still have lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, carrots. I can still have broccoli (limited amounts) which I usually eat with every meal at dinner. Eggs are ok too, and most meats. The fruits I am allowed to eat are not the ones I normally like but I can manage. This is not forever, though it will likely be a diet I need to cycle on/off depending on how I am feeling.

I do eat primarily a vegetarian diet so it is going to be a bit challenging to adapt to this at times. At least with the pandemic, everything I eat is cooked at home so I have control over it.

I am very confident that going off these f***ing pills I've been on for years will make a big difference too. I never really needed to pay attention to what I was eating until I started them. They totally messed up my system.

If anyone is interested I'm starting an at home 30 day challenge with my friends to motivate them, I can post the workouts here for whoever would want to do them. All can be done at home with no equipment.
For example, today is pretty simple.
3-5 rounds of:
5 push ups
10 sit ups
15 squats

People choose if they want to do 3, 4, or 5 rounds.

This is a great idea. An At-Home Fitness Regime that doesn't require equipment. Your example is pretty basic; how much can you scale it up? Can you come up with something for intermediate and advanced levels?
