There is no reason to bring back Roy for the price he will command, and it’s just yet another example of gross asset mismanagement by this teams brass.

Next year should see

Anderson-Drew
Gavvy-Clarke
Englund-Spence

as the opening night pairs. Ideally, you see an upgrade on that bottom pairs left side, but it’s at least a start in teething the future cornerstones of this teams blue line.
They have to upgrade 3LD.. please get Zadorov.. nasty and much better and affordable if you have the brains to let go of Roy.. but I doubt Zadorov would want to sign on with this shit show anyway.

I agree that's one of the major areas of need. Sounds like Zad is gonna re-sign in Vancouver. I think people will be surprised how much he gets if he goes to market. This is also his last chance to really cash out.

Or you could give a retirement contract to Skej.

Skej-Doughty
Anderson-Clarke
Gavrikov-Spence
Englund

it's summer baby

That works... but pretty soft.. for sure that fixes the lack of offense in the top 4. Then you ask Gav to waive his NMC at the deadline and get a more physical big 3LD... again Bluc wont do anything smart like that because it undermines the illusion the team is a contender.

I agree. They can try and add some toughness to the 4th line I guess. Hiller with his 11/7 can give Englund some shifts.

I think Doughty is a problem as well. He was really good this year, but struggled in the playoffs. He's too old and they ran him into the ground over the course of the season. A high quality dman like Skej could help lighten that load.

I will be calling for Hiller's firing if DD is near the top of the league in TOI again.

100% agree about DD.. they talk about his playing time as highest in the league like its a good thing.. and he's been near the top for most of his career. It effects how he plays. He's always in conserve energy mode, rarely pushes play.

Drew likes playing with defensive players but he’s usually more effective with an offensive player (like Muzzin) since he generally opens a lot of space for his partner. Looking to trade low for someone like Chabot/Provorov makes a lot of sense to me, to be honest.

They should really be looking to upgrade their top players and pushing guys down rather than getting more tweener players. The best options to upgrade their third line/third pairing are by pushing guys like Moore & Anderson down than anyone they bring in from the outside.

Zadrov is gonna get the Brooks Orpik overpayment of this generation here in a month. He is gonna be paid like a 2nd pair stalwart, and play like he always has prior to this years playoff run.

If he could walk away from the money, he would be an ideal 3rd pair guy for sure, but it ain’t gonna happen.

Wait, is it confirmed he’s asked for a trade? If so, good for him.
That’s exactly why they’ll do it though. Hoven has been hinting that they’ll try to sign Roy and that Spence isn’t in their future plans since the season ended, which tracks perfectly with BLuc’s moves over the past three years.
I sure hope they dont move Spence, I would much rather use the money it would cost to sign Roy on a LD1, unless Gavrikov is somehow moved and that money's used on a mobile LD1, if he does move Spence I hope it's for a Ryan Johnson out of Buffalo or first. No need to move for the sake of moving

That's not my read on him. He seems like a guy who's finally figured it out. Sometimes with Dmen it takes until their late 20's.

He's been playing well for the last 2 or 3 years. Not just this PO run.

For the sake of whoever pays that man, I hope you’re right

there's a post topic on the main board titled "top 5 cant win with em players"
i noticed how consistently pld and fiala showed up in this nhl wide list. victor arvidsson probably belongs as well.
is rob blake trying to corner the market?

This "team" Blake has constructed HAS ZERO IDENTITY. I can't stomach watching this roster every night.. We lack Size and Moxy the Kings lack Huevos, and boy is it just depressing to watch.

Don't even get me started on PLD, my god man do you have an ounce of pride?

Prospect Development has been absolute trash since Lombardi got canned.

Here are the Kings draft picks since 2017 that have scored at least 50 NHL points and played at least 100 NHL games.

1. Gabriel Vilardi
2. Arthur Kaliyev
3. Quinten Byfield

THAT"S IT - Completely Insane

Trading Brock Faber - Dear god shoot me please.

I am in a nightmare and can't wake up, we have become a worse version of the 2009 to 2015 Canucks, All flash and no substance

Arvidsson is a fine complimentary middle-six winger, who actually plays with a bit of fire. I would hesitate to lump him in with the other two.

Except on a defense first team that has too many small players as it is. Nashville was headed nowhere with this guy so blake acquires him. Small, injury prone yeah he scores but he's not a guy any nhl team will win with in the playoffs.
Look what happened to panarin(not a comp but comparable in size)Guys like this get taken to the woodshed in the playoffs

Totally agree.. RV spent at least 50% of the time sliding on the ice. There's less space to be creative so guys that are small have a tough time.. There are some exceptions like P Kane and TGO and prob a few others but in general, if you dont weight at least 180 lbs you get knocked around in the playoffs. Fiala seems to be able to handle it OK w his reverse hits.. plus he's pretty stocky.

Yea Panarin on the Panthers 2nd goal last night was a disgrace. He lost a race to the puck on the forecheck on purpose so he wouldnt get hit with inside position, then let a puck go over him in the slot which was 50/50, then he goes for a permitter play and flings the puck into shinguards for a turnover the other way and goal. Just an incredibly soft shift with the season at stake. Id like to find a replay of that full shift because in real time I couldnt believe it.
He was a much tougher playoff performer in Columbus. He looked like he could fit in well with the Kings last night.

But he got us that pond hockey phenom Kevin Fiala?? 🤷‍♂️

Bottom line the Kings aren't winning jack with Kopitar and/or Doughty on the roster. Until the organization and their fan boys realize this simple fact, nothing will change.

Fire Robitaille.
It sucked having incompetent ownership. Then we dealt with criminal ownership. But it just might be more depressing that the consequences of getting a winner after 40 plus years was that we would be left with sentimental ownership who is ok with money over winning.

Welcome back! Feels like you haven't posted in awhile.

The Kings are somehow horrible at all of

Drafting
Developing
Deploying

Some of these key picks ended up with such an awful return, it's amazing all these guys still have jobs.

Turcotte (5)
Kupari (20)
Bjornfot (22)
Hughes (51)
Grans (35)
Thomas (51)
Pinelli (42)
Kaliyev (33)
JAD (41)
Fagemo (51)

I like Kaliyev and still have some faith, but lets call a spade a spade, it's been a disappointing pick, and he will be traded for less of a pick than where he was taken.

Turcotte, again you can say you like him and have faith, but lets call a spade a spade, it's been one of the worst picks in franchise history.

These 9 players, all of whom were taken with 1st or 2nd round picks between 2017 and 2022 will likely account for 2 spots on the 24-25 opening night roster (Thomas and Turcotte as 4th liners).

The one 2nd round pick that they hit out of the park they traded before he even played a game, because Blake ended the rebuild to soon and his picks sucked so he needed offense.

It's just crazy man, I feel like a performance like this for 99% of businesses in America would result in huge firings, yet nothing ever happens.

OK, the best way to put Rob Blake’s utter failure into perspective is to compare his run with the best GM (In my opinion) in Hockey, Bill Zito of Florida. Zito has been a GM for a little more than half as long as Blake, and has his team headed to their second SC final in two years as the presumptive favorite. Before Zito got there, the Panthers were the epitome of NHL mediocrity, yet in his second year, the team won the President’s trophy and now stands four games from winning the Cup, and I guarantee neither the Oilers nor Stars are looking forward to playing them.

So, how did Zito do it? First, like Dean Lombardi, he inherited a core- Barkov is a Kopitar clone (AB is more physical but is not the skater AK is). He also had a #1 goaltender in Bobrovsky who is paid almost twice as much as Quick in his prime and who can be inconsistent in games that don’t mean anything. He also had a #1 D-man in Ekblad who is injury prone and not as skilled as Doughty. So, given this core, how did Zito turn things around so quickly? There are three ways for a GM to improve a club – drafting, trades and finding pieces that are undervalued by everyone else and bringing them in. Zito has excelled at the latter two, finding it more productive to move picks and open the team’s window of competitiveness earlier. Let’s look at some moves:

Carter Verhaege, the second leading scorer in the playoffs was signed after being non-tendered by Tampa.

Gustav Forsling, to my uneducated eyes is one of the best players in the NHL (reminds me of Nick Lidstrom without the offensive upside) was a waiver claim. He’s now signed at less the $6mm for the next 8 seasons. He’s a lot better than Gavrikov who cost us a #1 pick.

Sam Bennett, the human wrecking ball and clutch scorer, was a former #4 overall pick who was miscast in Calgary and acquired for the 61st pick in the 2022 draft plus a bag of pucks.

Sam Reinhart, the second leading goal scorer in the league and who was #1 in power play goals cost just a late #1 pick and a top goalie prospect who was redundant because Florida has Spencer Knight who was drafted by the previous regime.

Evan Rodrigues, who somehow found another gear in Florida was a UFA.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson who was miscast as a top pairing defender by two teams but who is an elite on the bottom pair was signed to a low risk, inexpensive contract and now pilots the second power play unit.

Ditto Dmitri Kulikov who is playing the best hockey of his career when placed in a sheltered role where he’s not asked to do too much.

Zito did it again with Niko Mikkola who was always undervalued by St. Louis and whose lack of foot speed is made up for by a mean streak and now clever positioning (likely due to coaching)

Brandon Montour who was the team’s best d-man last season before being surpassed by Forsling cost only a third round pick after Buffalo gave up a #1 to acquire him from the Ducks.

That makes five of their top six defensemen who were pulled off the scrap heap. Even the team’s #7 d-man, Josh Mahura, was a waiver claim. My bet is Tobias Bjornfot, who Zito also picked up on waivers, will become a legit NHL player in Florida.

One might be tempted to say that this was blind luck, but when it happens over and over again, and when you recognize something in Forsling that no one else saw, one needs to start admiring Zito’s work. These were all moves Rob Blake could have made.

Then, to cap it off, Zito makes perhaps the best trade in the NHL over the past five seasons. He takes a pushing 30 year old franchise icon who was at the top of his market value but who Zito did not want to pay and sends him along with another pending UFA in Mackenzie Weegar who Forsling replaced and a #1 to obtain one of the most impactful players in the NHL and a heart and soul guy in Matthew Tkachuk who happens to be in the heart of his prime years. And, Tkachuk is four+ years younger than Huberdeau and is pad $1mm less a season. Zito fleeced Calgary twice, Tkachuk and Bennett.

This is how winners are built. Zito has a problem in the offseason with some UFAs to sign, but if the Panthers win the Cup, who cares? He also has $20mm in cap space to play with, remarkable given he has a Stanley Cup capable roster, a core locked up and more cap space than the Kings. Zito does have one advantage that Blake lacks, the no income tax status in Florida which evidently is attractive to a lot of players. Having said that, anyone who wants to apologize for Blake’s lack of performance only needs to look at Bill Zito and what could have been. I hope Edmonton wins tonight so I can watch them get schooled by the Panthers who have that lean and hungry look to go along with their talent. Go Panthers!

Maybe their incentive plan is just making the playoffs.. seems so with Luc broadcasting the 'get in and anything can happen' tripe. It makes sense because they dont seem concerned about building a roster for the post season... even the Koala coaching selection - a guy who cant get it done in the post-season - fits this perspective.

Piston, great post. Been talking up Zito recently.

Zito also built a very tough team to play against. It started with the Tkachuk deal - he changed the identity of the team. Bennett is underrated tough, they have Lomberg, and signed Gadjovich. Kulikov was a sneaky signing. Cousins in the new Matt Cooke.

He did make one bad trade - the Owen Tippet for the rental of Claude Giroux. This also cost them a 1st and a 3rd in addition to Tippet who now emerged as a star in Philly.
