I have a take about Fitz not making the move to fire Ruff just yet. Maybe Fitz hasn’t pulled the trigger because Ruff hasn’t been able to utilize his true system due to the injuries/subpar goaltending we’ve gotten this year. The more recent defensive focused scheme they’ve utilized obviously has to do with the lackluster goaltending, which obviously will take away from the offense, but I feel as if they may believe there’s no choice but to stick with it. When we were clicking on offense, we couldn’t get a damn save. I’m just spitballing and want Ruff gone just as much as anyone else, but just a thought I would figure I’d share.

I'm not smitten with him I just don't think this season is his fault. It's not even about mulligans or second chances...

I think they gave him a defense destined to expose the goaltending without injuries. With the injuries to the D and the forwards he stood no chance this season.... like I have said I'm not a Ruff fan or apologist. I don't like his style and never wanted him as a head coach...but here we are and I just don't think you can lay blame on him given the hand he was dealt..

Poor starts over and over and over again. Waiting too long to attempt to make defensive adjustments (and still not working). Lines in a blender. Rolling with Vitek too long. Playing goalies on back to backs. Riding Daws too long. Head scratching lineup decisions and benching. Misusing Timo…

Definitely at fault for a lot. Not all, but a lot.

He’s the second in all time losses

Marty is first for goalies

I know nobody wants to hear about him anymore, but good article on Brunette nonetheless.

Nashville just finished up a 5-0 road trip btw.

Aside from the Brunette angle, don’t you just love all these teams that theoretically should have peaked 3-7 years ago, but just keep winning while we walk around stepping on rakes?

this is my stance as well. as much as we all feel he has done a pretty horrific job this season, he deserves credit for some of those aforementioned things over his tenure and everyone should appreciate him on his way out. that being said, hopefully i am wrong, but i am not convinced at all that he is going to be relieved after the season. i dont trust that he wont be back come training camp next season.
I'm pretty sure after this season Fitz is forced to move on from Ruff especially if a good coach becomes available (there are a few decent options out there right now) but I will say if Fitz decides to roll with Ruff next season then get ready for the Fire Fitz chants to start. It would be criminal to go into next season with Ruff and Fitz would take 100% blame for that.

I find it curious that someone who claims to not be a Lindy apologist sure is doing a lot of apologizing for him.

@AfroThunder396 pretty much nailed it…this guy needs to go because he’s not just doing bad at his job, but keeping him around is bad news for this group even beyond this season.
Wait til the next coach has to figure out how to incorporate Bahl Luke and Nemec....this ain't going away next year

Excellent analogy.

It sure seems Fitz has gone into exile. Disappointing. He’s done a lot of great work as GM when it comes to trades and drafting but there’s way more to the gig than that. His failure to pull the trigger and put Ruff down sends a message that this season is acceptable. There needs to be accountability. Or do we want to become the Buffalo Sabres? Take a look at their imbecile of a GM who refuses to fire Granato, despite their entire fan base clamoring for him to be canned.

Make…..a……move

Ruff is 4th in all time wins. He has earned some respect.

As much as we all think his time is up here, he has done some good things during his tenure too. It’s okay to acknowledge that.

since his Buffalo days, he has coached 8 seasons (including this one). He has made the playoffs 3 times and is on track to miss again this season.

What respect should he have?

is there anyone here that actually believe Ruff adds something? Like even in the most generous framing of his coaching I can give him, he's an average guy.

If a guy isn't actively adding value, get him the f*** out of here and find someone who will. There's always gonna be average and below average NHL coaches by definition, but they don't have to coach my team.

I'm betting Lindy scores 5 tonight while playing solid D with quick transitions out of our own zone.

Oh wait, the players do that stuff right?

using that logic, why not just hire me? I can do what Lindy has done this year for sure.
Hell, at least Holtz would get more ice time.

Great, if coaching doesn't matter there's even less reason to keep him.

I wonder what the music would sound like if you got John Williams to conduct the highschool marching band...I think it would still sound like the highschool marching band?

Just a hunch.

I thought he was a good fit with his transition game for the team's talent (The Hughes brothers, Bratt, now Nemec). Apparently the swarm makes sense if you want your center near the blue line also in the D-zone (I admit I read this here and am not an expert on team tactics) and having Jack Hughes near the blue line makes a ton of sense. There seemed to be some genuine thought in his hire and it worked well until it didn't.

The team was great last year and Ruff deserves some credit for it for sure.
