Finland's status and reputation in the hockey world (merged)

Probably because of the childish ranting by some fins in the GDT's. Obviously doesn't speak for all finish people, but a lot of them registered here this month and do nothing but flame people and make things up.

As for the team, we do respect them and I have no idea why you made this thread when there's one a few down about how Finland is a top 4 team

From what I have read it seems most north Americans think it's either USA or Canada now . Sweden or Finland can get silver but no more .
They look at the rosters and want to trade them in for medals immediately. Fortunately it doesn't work that way.

They didn't win any fans with that performance against Canada in the round robin. It's like they were trying to kill the enjoyment of the sport.

Finland just a very boring style. I think that's how they play even with their top centers in the game.

I just hate boring hockey. I would even cheer for USA to win gold against Finland if it came to that.

It's because they haven't had any players in NHLs top 30 scorers for many years now. North Americans love them stats on paper above all else.

They aren't quite top tier in terms of talent alone, but their goaltending and commitment to a smart, disciplined team game gives them a fair shot against anyone. There's a reason they have gotten medals in 4 of the last 5 Olympics.

Include 2004 World Cup too, Silver for Finland. And you can book at least top 4 result from 2014 now.

NHL wasn't there untill in 1998, but Finland was. Count anything you want from 1988, consistency has been there since.

But not yet best on best Golds.. loooong minus..

I consider Canada/World Cup more like exhibition tournaments, those were basically rigged against European teams.

I give them more respect now then I did 12 hours ago... Russia was the favourite though... they had more starpower up top... But Finland is more well rounded. A lot of people over seen that. Finland is better they just don't have the stars... and the ones they have are either older (selanee) Hurt (Mikko) to young (Barkov)

Not many North Americans are familiar with Finns outside of the Koivu borthers and Selanne unless the follow a NHL team that has specific not-as-popular Finns. Some Finnish players have Russian-sounding names, such as Komarov and Barkov, so to the ear, one would not guess they were Finns.

Wait this simply is not true. Finland can win Gold for sure. I do understand exactly what you are saying though. Everyone is talking about US and Canada. Sweden right now is being underated. Russia was certainly considered better than Finland also so I get why you feel disrespected. If you read one of my earlier posts I always include you guys while others say there's only 4 teams that can win I say 5.
As far as ranking you guys were probably 4 or 5 in my mind but any team with Rask is not taken lightly.
Now why isn't anyone concerned enough by Finland?
That's a different story.
Maybe too worried about the other Powerhouses like Sweden and Canada.
Its possible your team lacks depth.
Selanne is up there in age and Granlund is young.
It has too do with Finland's lack of talent and names at forward and d.

We are the Finns..... we are not asking for respect. Let's try to win Gold at best on best first and see what happens.

because the finnish play the same system as the norways, Latvians, the swiss, always have. They are just the best at that system, and have the best goaltenders that allows them to do it more effectively.

until they start playing an attacking style, they will always be in that group

Sorry, Finland. You're in the same place Lumbus is. Gotta prove something to gain our much revered respect.

Because you never followed hockey.

We never beat anybody - they just lose to us.

Unfortunately spirit can carry you only so far, which is why Finland is always the bridesmaid and never the bride.

They didn't win any fans with that performance against Canada in the round robin. It's like they were trying to kill the enjoyment of the sport.

They were also playing without their three best centers. That's going to alter your game plan significantly. That's like Backes, Kesler and Pavelski going down for the US. That's a massive loss.

Who disrespects the Finns?
Most people I talk to consider them to be one of the top 5 teams. They are always in the mix for a medal and have the most medals since the NHL started participating in the Olympics.
In Canada at least they seem to be one of the teams that get the most support if Canada gets knocked out.

I think they are very respected.

I've always thought of Finland as just a notch below the elite teams, but maybe that will change with this Olympics and the past WJC.

How I've viewed the teams:

Canada
USA
Sweden
Russia

Finland
Czech Republic
Slovakia

Switzerland
Germany

Austria
Norway
Denmark
Latvia

With the tier below capable of beating one tier above them, but 99% of the time not 2 tiers above them.

Can't speak for anyone else but I certainly respect Finland and put them on the same level as US or Sweden. Best goalie depth without question. I thought they were underrated coming into the tournament (before they were w/o the Koivus, Filppula, and Barkov).

They are one of the big 5 for me.

Respect is earned and beating Russia is a good start.

Well this is pretty much it. Its not a start. If you are talking about continuity even on best on best tournaments, there is not many nations better. Actually finland is the only country to have 3 medals in best on best olympics, and on their way of getting fourth. I mean what does finland have to do to prove it?
