I understand the format and how "it makes sense", but still, really doesn't to me. Russia for example, is 2 points ahead of the USA (who beat them) and gets its pass to the semis for games played against relegation teams, that are no part of the medal rounds. That makes perfect sense to me. On the other hand, Belarus loses its 2 points for their win against USA because they are no part of the relegation rounds. That's a little less obvious to me, I think that in this format, a team that would have beaten the gold and silver medallists in the round robins could statistically get relegated to pool B. :dunno:

The problem with belarus getting points from the u.s game is that in the relegation round it's no longer competing against the u.s but against the other teams in the relagtion round. You can't count the points earned against other teams not part of the relegation round because the two teams from the other group never had the opportunity to play those teams.

Still isn't good enough for me. Russia gets to pass to the semis with wins over Belarus and Switzerland, teams that Slovakia (or Sweden, or Finland) didn't get the opportunity to play against. Still it makes sense cause those points were earned.

Well anyway, won't solve nor change anything tonight for sure! Have a nice end to 2004 everybody, and lets start 2005 with gold! ;)

Here is the difference...

You make the medal round based on success against ALL other teams in your pool, and you go to the relegation round based on lack of success against ALL other teams in your pool.

Once you are in the relegation round, you fight to stave off relegation against the other 3 teams in the round. It has nothing to do with how well you did against teams in the medal round. It is a whole new round robin competition. The only thing is that the game you already played against a relegation opponent in the first round robin counts. There is nothing unfair about that.

People here are making it sound like Belarus deserves better because of just one win in the round robin. It doesn't matter who they beat, they still only managed one win on an even playing field with the 4 other teams in their pool. Just because it was their first ever round robin win and just because it was against the defending champions and hosts doesn't make it worth more than the two points it got them in the round robin phase of the tournament.

If Belarus gets a better fate just for beating the USA, that is not fair to Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland.

Doomsday was correct in his explanation. The Relegation standings look like this:

Relegation Round Standings
R Team GP W T L GF:GA GDF PTS
1.. SUI 1 1 0 0 05:00 (+05) 2
2.. SVK 1 1 0 0 05:00 (+05) 2
3.. GER 1 0 0 1 00:05 (-05) 0
4.. BLR 1 0 0 1 00:05 (-05) 0

With the following games:
Switzerland vs Germany (Saturday)
Slovakia vs Belarus (Sunday)
Belarus vs Germany (Monday)
Switerland vs Slovakia (Monday)

Once this is done, the teams ranked 3rd and 4th (or 9th and 10th overall respectively) will drop to Div I for next year - to be replaced by Norway and Latvia (who won their Div I groups last week). This is why I've been saying since yesterday that Belarus' upset vs the USA will probably not stop them from being relegated.

Thank you so much Gurj, I've been :banghead: for the last 2 days trying to understand why Belarus will play against Slovakia tomorrow.I thought they were already out for next year and that their game against Germany in 2 days was only supposed to determine the 9th and 10th spot.

:teach: :handclap:

It's really pointless to complain about some team being in the relegation round instead of the medal rounds. None of the coaches have complained about the system because they know that ultimately it's all in their hands where they'll play after the preliminary group games.

For those that say that Slovakia got ripped off because they beat Finland, I just realized something.

While Finland lost to Slovakia, it would seem fair that Slovakia is the one that goes through, but then Finland beat Sweden! So then if we are to keep looking at head-to-heads, it would be unfair to Finland because they beat Sweden and are still out of it.. Sweden on the other hand beat the Slovaks, so it would be unfair to them too!

Now I see why they don't look at head to head when 3 teams are tied, and the current system seems fair to me.
