Gold on WCH ???

It is amazing, how Finland develop his ice hockey to top level. Such small country (5,5 mil.).

We (Slovakia) should send there some guys, that will spy their system and take it home.

Now go and win the WHC and the world cup too! :P *knock knock*

Nation of Domination, a play-by-play thing in HUT 16.

Pool of talent in our country is excellent. I'm going full homer now, but anyway, 5,5 million nation producing legit players and athletes "too much" for it's size.

It's in the water. The few, the proud, the Finnis homers!

Well, I think it's ok for us for once in a blue moon to let the moped go out of hands... I mean we usually specialize in misery and pessimism, so why not go overboard and celebrate when there is just cause!

Future does look good....
I would not mind if they tank in the WC in a weeks time but come back strong for the Cup in August.
But just looking at the talent out there coming out of the woodworks now....they should really have project "Gold in PyeongChang 2018" going now....let us just hope NHL and IOC will come to agreement before then as the bulk of our new talent will be about to enter NHL or playing their first year there then....

I don't care if NHL doesn't take part but Olympic Gold is the ****..

Couldn't players leave for the tourney even if regullar season wouldn't stop? Just not get paid for few games. I think olympic Gold should be Finland's goal now.

If the NHL instructs teams to suspend players if they decide independently to leave the team without permission, then the IIHF would have to honor that suspension and declare them ineligible for the tournament. If the NHL doesn't suspend the select few who decide to leave, then they can participate.

Sweden: Nation of Domination

Gold in Euro Hockey Tour this year and the last year.
Gold in Champions League this year and last year.
Gold in WCH?

Sure, but it just would seem so petty minded of the NHL to leave the Olympics - it certainly would not be good for the sport globally either and I think that even the NHL would understand that there would be substantial benefits for them too if the sport grows. (Also in the only currency they seem to understand, dollars.)

I'm not arguing that point. I agree. I hope the era of NHL Olympics continues. The players want to play, the fans want them to play, broadcasters want them to play, it's just a matter of who is going to pay for it. We'll see just how much the players want it if it means it has to come out of their pocket. My guess is...not all that much.

Sure, I don't either think that this scenario would be probable - I just hope that the NHL owners would understand that it's not a zero sum game but beneficial to them too, even if the bottom line suffers somewhat in the short term.

Gold in Euro Hockey Tour this year and the last year.
Gold in Champions League this year and last year.
Gold in WCH?

I thought JYP won it last year but seems to be so.

Those were Swedish club teams, but not all of their players were Swedes. For example, didn't this year's winner have a Finn and a Yank at the top of the scoring table?

I'd rather win the Worlds than that joke of a "cup".

oh to me it is not about winning actually....I know...heretic...but still...

even if the Cup is a strange pre-season shake-up....it still has some potential for providing some entertaining hockey from skilled players. The WHC is, has been...and will always remain as a bit of a "let's a have a tourney for those not still fighting for the NHL cup" and will always have a stigma of "well the best were not there"...

Neither tournament is the end all be all. While I personally love the World Hockey Championships, it can be a little silly too. The European teams all have their entire leagues structured around it, they all get to practice and hold training camps, cut players, test their lineup, etc. Now how is that at all fair to the North American teams? The WHC is very much a Euro Cup, just as much, if not more than the World Cup is a weird NHL Championships.

Enjoy them for what they are.

And congrats to Finland and their fans, some serious talent coming outta there.

i gotta say I was extremely relieved to see that this thread wasn't started by one of my fellow finns  with that said I have never been as excited about the state (and future) of finnish hockey

I've been saying this for over a decade:

Finland is the best hockey nation per capita. Sweden is second and Canada third.

I don't think it has as much to do with "systems" but more to do with opportunity coming from standard of living. My dad played hockey, I played hockey, my kids probably won't be able to afford to play. I make $100k per year and if I want a house near my work I'm paying a minimum of $700k. Canada's middle class is vanishing and so will our dominance over expensive sports like hockey.

For the record, Canada will dominate their way to easy gold in next WHC. It will look as easy as last year I'm afraid. Only Russia and Finland can do something about it this year, but somehow I doubt that it's going to happen.

I got the impression that Slovakians got so interested of soccer lately that it takes away some hockey juniors to soccer.
