Prospect Info: Filip Mesar

Has the organization said this though? You're really bending backwards trying to push this contrived narrative that doesn't exist.

They implied it with his usage and yes MSL said he saw the talent but he needed to work on his physicality and game without the puck.

Guy was a leader for Slovakia and 1.5 PPG in all the games he played as an A. He comes here and we ask him to be physical instead of placing him in a position to succeed. We're the ones wasting this pick.

I would have this opinion for any player...

its like asking Hutson to play like Scott Stevens and be mad at him for not having a big production.

He wasn't exactly tearing it up in the O

Sorry, where and when exactly was he putting up 1.5 ppg? Don't see that anywhere on his stat sheet.

First....it was never about being more physical. It was about being better at absorbing the North American physicality of the game. And frankly, this will always be asaked to every player Euro or not that doesn't have that tendancy to often play the body and absorb it. Actually MSL in 2024 said that he was REALLY satisfied with Mesar's progression......Also to get the puck, you need to know what to do without it. You actually play more without it then with it. Every player ALSO needs to improve, no matter if you are offense first. It's the NHL. It's getting tougher and tougher. And the more you want to make a difference and play in the playoffs...it's even tougher. So no idea where your narrative is all about here.

Frankly, I have more questions marks about his abilities to be as dynamic as we once saw prior to the draft. Question of confidence? Maybe. But could it also be a question of trying to avoid the tougher game?

My mind is made up about the guy. BUT there's no way the guy is worth anything right now so might as well put him in a top 6 role and play him often to see where this can go. Hopefully he racks some points....and become a value in a trade.

Players that make it, desperately want it, he gives no indication of a willingness to do whatever it takes.

True his body language sometimes is weird but it could also be some residual effect of him trying to preserve his confidence in NA where hes had trouble integrating

Look in his first camp here he was showing alot of positive qualities, with and without the puck, he was everywhere on the ice.

In his first days in the ohl he was producing well but then Denis immediately tried to coach him and tell him how he should be more like this and play more like this player and that player.

So i have no idea whos to blame really, when i look at his production with the national team , hes as good as any of the best players in the world.

I will never base my opinions of players because of their 1st camp. I can name you a gazillion of players who do good and that theire 1st camp is actually their best camp. Excitement. Expectations. And frankly, skilled players always look good at first. Juraj Mikus looked like Nikita Kucherov at camp. While Ryan White looked like the worst version of himself...guess who played in the league.

Now, again, it could be because of a gazillion factors. But reality is that I will believe that we are close to an end-result....yet...I want him to be on our top 6 in Laval surrounded by the best we can offer. Unless we have a taker this summer where we can trade same types of players....

Elite website, just combine the stats where he’s wearing an A for U18 and U20.

His last u20 he had an elite production of 9 pts in 5-6 games
Ok, so a short sample size in a U20 tourney. That's not much to build a case around.

Look, Mesar is still only 21 and there is no rush to jump to conclusions with this player, but his play hasn't inspired much reason for optimism over the past two seasons. On top of that, there isn't an obvious slot for him on the big team opening up in the next few years.

Hope he comes to camp, has a great showing, then forces his way into a top 6 impact role in Laval.

Pleks really started to establish himself in NA in D3&4 in the AHL, then hit the NHL in D5 and never looked back. Mesar had the talent to follow a similar trajectory, up to him to put in the work to make it happen.

22 games played, 35 pts
1.5 + ppg

Includes U20 and u18, covers both draft year + kitchener

I think his play at the international level has been very inspiring, not just pts wise but his actual game if you watched him play.

I think he wasted 2 years of development in kitchener.

He arrived at last year’s camp completly off and unprepared.

And the bottom line here is that my complaints are not specifically regarding Mesar, they’re about how we develop young prospects.
How many 1st rounders did we ruin?
The first rounders that really made it here are the guys the organization went above and beyond to protect.

Koivu
Price
Slaf

Pacioretty got flattened by the pressure of being captain

Sergachev, Mcdonaugh succeeded elsewhere.

We have a terrible track record with our firsts, cant blame it all on the players

Except those that developed those players have absolutely nothing with our current development teams .

You've chosen some odd examples to illustrate your point.

Pacioretty is a clear first round success. One of the leagues best and most consistent scorer for like 5-6 years with us, then traded for our current #1C. You really can't hope for better than that out of the 22nd overall pick.

Sergachev and Mcdonaugh were great picks, the problem was that we traded them. Not sure how you consider those picks to be part of a 'terrible track record'.

There were definitely some lean times under Bergevin, and some questionable picks, but that regime was fired over three years now and the new regime has clearly put more emphasis on player development. Not sure we need to continue to point at examples from over a decade ago as if they somehow relate to Mesar.

Just from having watched Mesar live a few times this year, I wouldn't hold out too much hope on him being a full time NHLer. It's not even about skill, his compete level is very far from where it should be and it showed.

Suzuki is a well above average skater and much closer to fast than average. I had to edit this post as I believed that he was fast but the NHL edge stats did not back that up........until I looked again and I was only looking at the 5 playoff games where we all know he was playing injured. After switching to the regular season metrics which obviously are far more accurate due to the immense amount of data relative to a 5 game playoff snapshot my eye test was vindicated!

80th percentile in top skating speed
94th percentile in speed bursts over 20 mph
76th percentile in speed bursts over 22 mph

Just to be clear.......your claim was that he would be well under the 50th percentile in all 3 of these categories.

Before making such absurd, hyperbolic comments you should at least confirm that you are correct with readily available data.

Suzuki's style will cause alot false perceptions about him.

He plays a poised, and calculated style particularly when the puck is on his stick. When that style is not working for him, you hear everything from Suzuki is fat to Suzuki is slow.

It is painful to have to listen to as you would think that people who are so passionate about the sport would be more knowledgeable.

Most hockey fans are absolutely horrific at evaluating skating and that is ok as they are not scouts and at the end of the day this is just entertainment for them.. It is not like their inability to identify who the actual best skaters are will have any real world repercussions other than annoying me far more than it probably should lol.

I just did the exact same thing with another poster who claimed that Rasmus Anderson has slowed down in each of the past few seasons and this should be a concern for anyone looking to acquire him. Of course the data showed that this was utter nonsense as he has not slowed down at all and even posted better skating metrics this year than in either of the past two years. There are a group of posters here that consistently post things that are absolutely objectively and measurably false and even when you prove it to them over and over again they either go silent or go full Jordan Peterson with nebulous nonsense.
