Prospect Info: Filip Mesar

If Hughes has any chance to trade Mesar away, he should do it while Mesar still has value (just because he's a 1st rounder). If someone offers a 3rd pick or better, we should do it.

Skill was never there. He was taken partly because he is Slaf best friend.

Waste of a first round pick. Almost gave me heart attack when they passed on Hutson and took Mesar.

The Slaf/friend narrative is utter nonsense made by fans connecting dots that are not there. Mesar was considered to be one of the faster players in the draft and they were very clear in their comments about targeting a player that they felt could push the pace and entirely dismissed the simpleton narrative of having played with Slaf being a factor in their decision.

No reason for any teams to do that. We are stuck with him.

You sure do spend alot of time hating a guy who’s struggling right now.

Like ok they “maybe” made a mistake selecting him but why aren’t you mad that we gave 2 high picks for a Newhook?

And you wayyyyyy overdefend him, to each his own thing I guess. I'm also mad at the Newhook trade. Voice it multiple time in the trade thread. Is it a fanboy page and I can't state what I think about a prospect?

Hughes job is probabilistic, the only way for him to never make any bad decisions is if he never makes any decisions at all (which is itself a decision).

So don't get angry about results, focus on process.

Ya so far. I’m not sure who would have been better. I guess we’ll see. In the end, it may not have mattered, especially in a weak draft.

Kulich and Firkus were well liked on this board and both are trending better than Mesar (especially Kulich).

You also have guys like Howard, Lamoureux, Chesley, Minten, Luneau who all gathered interest IIRC.

He's sus, he's small , reminds me of a Timmins pick and I'm not impressed. Another first rounder thrown into the wind, for the sake of making our #1 pick happy, nothing more.
Another Legendary scouting report, I keep knocking them out of the park. Next step, ECHL or Beer League

Guys, Hughes said that they didn’t care at all about Mesar being Slaf’s best friend, so it must be true

Obviously it was a factor and was considered, it may not have been the deciding factor, but pretending it had no influence is just as delusional as saying they would have picked any bum from Slovakia to appease Slaf.

Honestly, it’s a better explanation anyway that they went for a chemistry pick instead of them seriously thinking Mesar was the best player available.

I was a late 1st rounder in one of the weakest drafts in recent memory.

He was boom-or-bust. He busted. That's fine. We need to swing for the fences with offensive minded players! They did, they struck out. Next!

If the Habs had drafted Jiri Kulich instead of Filip Mesar it's not clear to me that anything would be different.
Absolutely baffling take. Jiri Kulich is an established NHL player now, and is a big two-way C who finished the year in BUF averaging mid-high 50s in faceoff%.

Meanwhile, Mesar is being healthy scratched in the AHL.

You’re right, they’re totally the same calibre.

Kulich was a bottom six center on one of the worst teams in the league with a 45% faceoff percentage.

Would he have made the Habs roster?

Kapanen made the Habs this year, so yes, Kulich absolutely would have. Also, the 45% figure is overall - he improved as the season went on and was averaging high 50s to end the season, like I said. He also finished the year as Buffalo’s 1C - they moved Thompson to wing in favour of Kulich because he’s already better than Thompson at faceoffs and defensively.
