What an amazing comeback by Canada! Part of me knew they were going to win when the puck bounced off the goalpost of the empty net after the ref messed up... hockey gods and whatnot.

Hillary Knight is gifted. I know she committed one of the penalty that ultimately led to the OT goal but she made Wickenheiser look slow on the breakaway.

Horrible "slash" call in that OT. Handed it to Canada.

That said, USA choked as bad as any team ever having it in their hands late in the 3rd.

These two teams are fantastic to watch play.

Great game until OT. Would have liked to see the ref not factor into the outcome as heavily as she did. Direct headshot elbow is one thing, a pad check(even with a warning from the 2nd period) before the whistle on a point shot, is not equivalent and should not have constituted a makeup call.

Penalty Shot is the right call when #22 was tripped up by #21, not cross-checking.

It would've been nice if the refs had put away their whistles, but the US still blew it, and that's on them. It should've never gotten to OT. It's not even that Canada really stepped up the pressure. They got a fortunate bounce off of a US player, then needed the extra player with the goalie pulled to tie it up. They were just patient and opportunistic, and the US left the door open for them.

I'm not upset about the slashing call because she was warned and, more importantly, it only returned the sides to even strength. I'm not upset about the breakaway penalty because that will always be penalty. Knight had more speed than the tired Wickenheiser, yet she stopped skating as soon as she was in stick range. She could've played that better and she could've made a better pass in the slot. The team's supposed best player made two critical mistakes to lose the game.

As an American, it's frustrating that the US women's team consistently looks gold worthy, getting our hopes up, and then manages to somehow blow it when it matters most. It'd probably be easier if they were worse, with the tendency to step up from time to time. We Americans are totally fine with being underdogs that occasionally pull off miracles (see 1980). What's tough is, instead, being a favorite and choking time and again.

The refs did the Americans a favour by not calling the penalty shot

I'm not sure about that. As an American, I actually preferred a penalty shot to two minutes of 4-on-3, which is more deadly than 5-on-4.

Not reading through 2 entire threads, but to those who are complaining about the reffing being biased... :help:

Ref almost caused an empty net goal in the first period, made a bad call in OT followed by a bad make-up call directly after. As far as the "cross-check" on the breakaway goes - the only thing that is ridiculous about the call is that it wasn't a penalty shot. The reffing was bad, but not biased - bad calls to both sides. Someone throw up a gif already - shows blatant skate on skate contact which causes Wickenheiser to go down... do you really, honestly think Wickenheiser in her swan song would dive rather than power through for the breakaway goal and go out as a hero?

Congrats to both teams on their medals and congrats to the ladies from Switzerland, awesome result for them.

As a Canadian this was a humiliating way to win a medal, sorry Americans you all got royally screwed. Unspeakably terrible calls in OT, I mean they'd be atrocious whenever they happened but to basically hand Canada the gold was a farce.

Good luck tomorrow, I'm hoping for a hockey game that is allowed the opportunity to play out.

Yeah I agree, would have taken the penalty shot any day over the power play...was hoping they would call it as soon as I saw the infraction, I knew a 2 minute 4 on 3 was a problem.

Ref wasn't biased, she just choked in the moment harder than the US team did.

Breathtaking comeback. Maybe the greatest moment in Canadian Olympic hockey history in both men's/women's.

I am truly sorry for anyone who feels this way. It must be difficult for them. I'm sure they won't be having any further discussion or feeling even a tinge of joy of Canada winning the gold medal in women's hockey.... any further discussion or positive remarks by someone expressing these sentiments regarding the winning of this gold medal will only result in the appearance of hypocrisy on the part of those expressing similar sentiments. One hopes the 'humiliation' isn't life defining.

First of all, I'm a huge fan of women's hockey. I got my whole office watching the game off my screen today. Yet I had to come on here to feel better about the win. I was ecstatic when they scored with 3:49 to go. I was jumping up and down at work when they tied it up. I felt nothing when they won. Which sucks. I'm now more convinced that the calls were at least appropriate, but at the time I hated the fact that so many penalties were called in OT and it was won that way. A full strength win would have been so much more satisfying. For me, it should have been one of the the comebacks of women hockey history, but it just feels a little sour to me for some reason.

I can't remember which Canadian got called for cross checking in OT (also not a cross check), but that's a play that should definitely be allowed no matter the stakes. The US girl sticks her head in the crease and starts jamming away at the goalie- the correct response is to knock her on her ass.

The ref made a bad call, and then looked to even it up. This is what's happened in hockey for years. It's just fortunate for Canada that Lamoureux was so stupid immediately afterward, instead of the US scoring before giving the ref a chance to back up a warning.
