(I just posted this in the last thread, but it was locked seconds later, and I spent too much time on it to not have it be read, so please pardon me for reposting)
It would've been nice if the refs had put away their whistles, but the US still blew it, and that's on them. It should've never gotten to OT. It's not even that Canada really stepped up the pressure. They got a fortunate bounce off of a US player, then needed the extra player with the goalie pulled to tie it up. They were just patient and opportunistic, and the US left the door open for them.
I'm not upset about the slashing call because she was warned and, more importantly, it only returned the sides to even strength. I'm not upset about the breakaway penalty because that will always be penalty. Knight had more speed than the tired Wickenheiser, yet she stopped skating as soon as she was in stick range. She could've played that better and she could've made a better pass in the slot. The team's supposed best player made two critical mistakes to lose the game.
As an American, it's frustrating that the US women's team consistently looks gold worthy, getting our hopes up, and then manages to somehow blow it when it matters most. It'd probably be easier if they were worse, with the tendency to step up from time to time. We Americans are totally fine with being underdogs that occasionally pull off miracles (see 1980). What's tough is, instead, being a favorite and choking time and again.
I don't feel that way. As an American, I actually preferred a penalty shot to two minutes of 4-on-3, which is more deadly than 5-on-4.
