I started playing Tunic, and so far it's fantastic. Sort of what I've wanted out of Zelda franchise. Understands old game design elegance/minimalism/restraint even better than old games do, but without the jankiness. Great music, great art style, great sense of exploration/discovery, challenging. Kind of gives me part of the feeling that Hyper Light Drifter did, only more fully realized. I'm not far enough to get a sense of the story yet, but the way everything's being handled/delivered seems promising. Also love its instruction manual gimmick.

Tunic looks fantastic. I was waiting for it to get on sale on steam. How does it compare to Death's Door?

I could see someone finding Death's Door to be a much smoother and less frustrating experience (it's definitely more normal/typical), but I think Tunic is more restrained, interesting, and uncompromising, personally.

Tunic leans HARD into that get lost and figure it out yourself thing. It makes you earn the feeling of discovery using abstract clues and your gaming literacy as if the game were a mysterious artifact to piece together or something. Personally, I'm finding that very cool so far, but that may not be for everyone.

The combat is a bit more plodding and methodical than I like, though (Death's Door is snappier).

I'm inclined to say that Tunic to Death's Door is kind of like what Inside/Hollow Knight is to Little Nightmares/Ori. That's not 100% accurate, but that's sort of how I look at them.

Valheim's first big content udpate, the Mistlands, just came out. I'm on the fence whether to get back into it or continue waiting for the game to be complete. That was a long wait for Mistlands though and they still have two biomes to complete.

Anyone tried Chained Echoes ? I'm seeing a lot of positive reviews. The guys at SwitchUp rated it very highly.

Have a Nice death comes out next week. Definitely looking forward to that one.

Any Indies people have liked as of recent?

Some more good ones I played since this thread was made:

Severed Steel (excellent single-player movement shooter)
Cuphead
Sonic Mania
ULTRAKILL
Into the Breach
Rune Factory 4 Special
PowerWash Simulator

I had to bump this thread due to finishing Outer Wilds recently. This game is now up there with Disco Elysium and Hollow Knight. Just brilliant. It's a puzzle/exploration/open space game. No combat, but you can die. It also has a time loop. It's not for everyone, but if it's for you, it's an amazing experience.

I consider this 'generation' to have started around 2020 (the PC and the Switch have completely screwed with my generation timelines)... so since then I would say my favorites are:

Vampire Survivors
Inscryption
Balatro
Disco Elysium
The Case of the Golden Idol
Tunic
Spiritfarer
Chants of Sennaar
Death's Door
Unpacking
Mouthwashing
NORCO
Chicory: A Colorful Tale
Neva
Immortality
Viewfinder
1000xResist
Rogue Legacy 2
Monster Train
Thank Goodness You're Here
The Rise of the Golden Idol
Stray
The Plucky Squire
UFO 50
Crow Country
There Is No Game
Sea of Stars
Factorio
Satisfactory
Cocoon
Beacon Pines

I would highly recommend Nine Sols to everyone who loves Indie games. Has a lot of Hollow Knight to it. Got added to gamepass about a month ago but came out early last year.

If anyone has a Netflix subscription they've recently added their own version of a gamepass for mobile that with the app gets you a bunch of good indy games:

Hades
Sonic Mania Plus
Into The Breach
Dead Cells
Katana ZERO
Death's Door
Kentucky Route Zero
Moonlighter
Braid

Though not sure yet how some play on mobile rather than kb/m or controller, just been playing Civ VI on it.

I've played the hell out of mobile Dead Cells. I like what they're doing with their gaming apps. It's been a great bonus.

Oh, and everyone play Outer Wilds.

I'm not sure where else to put this, but I feel like I need to rant about this, because it's a case where widespread reputation is polar opposite to how I feel.

The thing that I am absolutely the most baffled by about Nine Sols is how heavily its visuals are being praised. As someone who's absolutely obsessed with drawings/art/animations/sprite-work and things like that, how poorly drawn and animated it is is by far the biggest weak-point for me, personally, yet it seems that everyone else agrees that it's just about the only untouchable aspect of it (I've seen more criticisms about its mechanical polish and storytelling, with the caveat always being that nobody can deny how beautiful it looks).

Yes, there is A LOT of animation and the guy clearly poured his heart into putting the work in and having an impressive "quantity" of animation, and he arguably has ambitious ideas when it comes to setting colors, presentation concepts, and art direction, but fundamentally, it also looks like it was drawn by an amateur on Deviant Art who isn't very good at drawing basics yet and is still learning, in my opinion. The guy does not appear to have much understanding of squash and stretch, fluidity, how to convey impact, how anatomy looks in motion, and things like that. In fact, it appears that the grand majority of the characters/enemies (especially larger enemies or non-humans) are just stiff/clunky blocks with appendages that are independently rotated at the joints like ragdoll action-figures to convey movement rather than moving like how things would actually move (or how they would unrealistically move in exaggerated but more dynamic/interesting cartoonish ways). It's perhaps flashy because of all the action that's going on, but it's flat, robotic, and completely non-dynamic, in my opinion.

The main character art/animation is moderately better (and the IDEAS for the moves are at least pretty cool), but it's still pretty lacking for me, personally. If someone I knew did something like this, I'd be proud of them, sure, but not a professional artist. I would argue that the large majority of critically acclaimed 2D indie darlings look significantly better than this, art-wise.

It feels like I'm alone on an island with this take, and I don't want to be mean to the guy because it's just a passionate guy doing their best, and I'm not saying I could do better, but man do I feel strongly about it. It just looks so ugly to my eyes but it seems that nobody agrees.

Edit: I mean, look at how these bosses move and look, it's gross. Not only does it look like a child with limited understanding of 3D perspective drew it, but it moves as if they cut out the torso and limbs out of cardboard paper and are just rotating them at the joints. How is the praise for this game's visuals so unanimous?!

(this one has more fluidity, but it still doesn't look good, in my opinion)
