He went rolling sideways from the contact. A trip would've sent him flying forward.

The only time that really happens is if the point of impact is at the knee, and then it's called clipping (or it's suppose to).

He did. Had surgery after a fight in KHL.

Oh yeah, you look like a moron if you miss and can seriously hurt your lower back if you hit the boards.

Having said that, nothing is more beautiful in terms of physical play than a well timed Rob Blake type hip check.
