Was that another request from Hockey Canada? Now they don't want to have fans cheering for their opponent like at the Canada Cup? :sarcasm:

Its not canada its cbc as well as other channels. They want an north american feel to the play off round.Where the building is rocking. They want fans to cheer they want them to make as much noise as possible you can not do this with whistling.

maybe its because most north americans don't realize that: whistling = booing in europe...

There is plenty of cheering. They usually whistle when they want a penalty. It's a way of booing.

I'd rather just have the crowd boo.

Usually i just projectile vomit out of the stands as a sign of displeasure. But that's just me, i come from a broken home.

Do they do it with football too? Seems to me that they boo there. So why just hockey? Why our ears and not everyone elses?

Europeans were whistling during volleyball in the Summer Olympics in Greece in 2004. There was one instance that a team thought the official blew the whistle and gave up on the play, but it was the fans. The fans whistled even louder.

I applaud the Winter Olympic officials for calling for an end to the whistling as the method of disapproval.

Those dirty Canadians! :sarcasm:

Maybe Hockey Canada will ask those euros to stop singing their drunken hooligan songs during games too... ;)

The main reason is for tv it does not look or sound good for a gold medal game. There is aslo some concern that some players may get mixed up between the refs whistle and the fans. And to add some north american fans did complain.Durring one of the womens game a fan would not stop whistiling durring the whole game and that up set some around them. Its does not matter if you whistle or cheer you have to common respect for the people around you.

Yeah, I don't understand the whistling either, sounds weird. They seem to whistle a lot when Canada's on a power-play, I figure it's meant to be a form of booing and as a way to try and distract the players.

I love the whistling. It gives the games a soccer-like atmosphere, and lets be honest, there is no crowd atmosphere like that of a professional soccer match.

You want to go to a game, you deal with the atmosphere. It's one thing if the fan is whistling in somebody's ear with the intent to piss them off, but that's not the case. Fans can make as much noise as they want, be it by cheering, booing or whistling.

...And if the players can't tell the difference between fans whistling and a referee's whistle, they shouldn't be playing the game.

I hate soccer, I hate whistling, and I hate having one clock that counts up while the other counts down.
