Fabian Zetterlund traded to Ottawa

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

Missed the NJD game, how did buddy do with Timmy and Brady?

He was alright.

That line overall played way better this game. Timmy was a lot more engaged and controlled the play a lot more. Tkachuk was doing his thing. Our forwards just played way better so we had the puck more and Zetterlund wasn’t defending as much.

I thought he looked a bit lost out there. Few shifts Green didn’t put him out there with Timmy and Stu and put them out with Amadio to close the game. He has good speed and apparently shot but he’s often not covering anyone in the Dzone just waiting in no mans land not really knowing what to do. He doesn’t really open himself up for shots from the half wall either on PP2 which is why we have never seen him shoot a puck through 7-8 games on the PP. at 5 on 5 he’s never in a good position where someone can distribute the puck to him.

His speed is good but Giroux is a better player and makes smarter plays out there. I think Zetterlund provides speed and that’s about it. He’s not in shooting position often enough and he doesn’t create enough outside of that to be effective. Gaudette (who I do not like) played a few shifts with Timmy and Brady and that line looked just as good with Gaudette than it did with Zetterlund.

I think I’d rather have Giroux on that top line but he obviously didn’t play well last few games which made this decision easy.

I also think Zetterlund might not be comfortable on the right side since he played left side most of the season. This allowed him to take quicm shots getting cross ice passes… which is way tougher to do on the right side.

I don’t know… a lot of time still but I haven’t seen much that I like from him at this stage. I liked him a ton in San Jose when we played them but he’s really a complimentary player and not a play driver and that’s a bit dissapointing to me.

Not easy to get traded mid season then get stuck on the 4th line with very little ice time to get into the games while learning new systems for a young player. He is really good at finishing his D man in his own zone, he has got alot of pucks out by blocking and forcing the d man out. I think people need to be more patient with him. He seems to be passing up some shots he likely wouldnt have in San Jose. He is going to be a valuable player for this team. An injury is inevitable, and he will be a huge piece to have.

Personally id be sitting Brady out for a bit here he is clearly injured. Id like to see Zetterlund on the left side with Stutzle and Giroux. Let him get some reps before people decide he is no good.

I liked his game. It was the first game where I felt like I was seeing the player they acquired, and I was encouraged by what I saw. He almost got one on the power play. He made a few crafty, skilled plays with the puck, including a perfectly weighted pass to spring Stutzle for a break. I think he'll settle in and be a good contributor.

There was a play he made in either the first or the third where he had the puck in a shooting position at the top of the circle and chose to pass it across the slot to Stutzle for a one-timer, but the pass just got deflected. Maybe in San Jose he shoots that puck, but I actually liked that he showed he's capable of seeing the pass there. It suggested he's not a tunnel-visioned shooter, which is important if he's actually going to play on the top line.

I Thought he looked solid yesterday. A few nifty plays that didnt work out and got robbed when he wasnt able to get that puck up over Allen's pads.

I really like him and his legs up on that top line over Giroux. It will pay dividends soon imo.
I like him there as well. Top 9 player for sure. Him or Giroux with Pinto and Greig is a fantastic 3rd line.

Of course he looked a little lost, it's his first game playing real minutes with totally different linemates.

And no one should have expected to see much of anything from him when barely playing 10 minutes a night with scrubs either.

He's going to be just fine as he gets adjusted to playing in the top-6 and is able to actually do his thing.

I hope you mean over 2 years. This guy has not proven anything so far
Before getting traded, he was pacing to finish with ~45 pts for the second year in a row, 5 mil/yr is too high imo, but 2.5/yr is probably equally too low.

If we can get him signed at 3.3 to 3.75 per year on a 3 year deal, I think that would be a steal,

He should be a 25-30 goal scorer though.

Should be based on what exactly?

His progression has been interrupted a couple times by trades now, but he's now 25 years old.

At 23, with the NJD. he paced 11 goals, and 37 pts before getting traded and taking some time to adapt to SJ
At 24, he put up 24g and 45 pts with SJ
At 25, he was pacing at 22g and 46 pts, and now he's taking some time to adapt to Ottawa.

I don't think there is a ton of growth remaining, and that's fine. There's some, and being in a better system will help, but I don't think it's fair to assume he'll start scoring 30 goals a year or be a 60+ pts winger. It's possible, but I think we need to assume he is what he's shown, maybe with a slight bump. 25g 45 to 55 pts is my hope for him,

Just like Donato, another guy that's going to be overpaid this summer for being a 3rd liner getting top 6 minutes on a shitty team.

Zetterlund will have a lot of difficulty potting 20 if he stays here. He's a middle 6'er at best, playing on a deeper team that's more defensive minded. Paying him Batherson money and expecting Batherson numbers will go badly.
