Player Discussion Fabian Lysell

I don't care where he summers, but he is a professional athlete, and summer is the time he has to build his body and build his game to improve himself as an NHL player. Some people stay in Boston and do this, some people go to Canada and do this, and I am sure there are people who go to Sweden or Finland, etc and do this

I don't know how hard he works in the offseason, but it does seem like it is 2 years in a row where he has shown up at camp behind the other players. It's not the 1960s anymore, all players in all sports are considered to have a 12 month job, that is one of the reasons they get the big money

And this isn't just a Lysell thing. We've seen other young players who never make it because they don't put in the work. They traded away a guy who had a real opportunity at a decent NHL career, who has just been unwilling to do the work necessary

if Lysell is in Boston next fall, he better have worked his tail off on the rink and in the weight room all summer and be in by far the best condition of his life day one of camp
I was being snarky. I totally get what you are saying and i've previously considered all of it. Lysell may or may not reach his potential in the NHL, I'm not sure yet. I do see a very skilled kid when I watch him and I've seen him a lot. I thought the suggestion that sweens and neely would hold it against him that he worked out at home in the summer was kinda silly. it paints the 22 year old kid that has been away from home since he was 18 in a poor light and also suggests the team would hold a grudge for something I find reasonable and believe they would as well.

Bruins would be foolish to make a decision like this unless he asked to be traded. They have no other prospects with his upside in the system. I don't see why they wouldn't give him at least another summer. He's still 22 years old. Would be classic Bruins to just give him away for a mid round pick (that almost surely would be nothing) as Lysell is finally getting NHL looks.

I'm not sure how you came to such a conclusion when he's play less than 5 NHL games.
His compete level should be very high after waiting all year to get called up. He is not skilled enough to make the NHL on skill alone, he has to work and work hard, compete hard for the puck, win some battles and go the net. This doesn't even mention his attempts to beat three guys by himself which has been limited on the Bruins so far.

There is talent, he adds some urgency to his game and a basic physical game ( I'm not talking about hitting or fighting) he might make it, playing like he is he won't IMHO

Oh man…we don’t need forwards who try to beat guys by themselves. The horror.

I think the criticism "he tries to beat guys by himself" is nonsense. I don't think he does it too much and even if he did it more, lots of players in the NHL do that.

I think the criticism that he's soft or won't go to the danger areas is also false. He is very willing to get into a battle or get his nose dirty, he goes in the corners, he gets to pucks first even if he knows he's going to be hit, he leans on guys, he draws people to him and takes hits to make plays. He plays with courage.

What I think is fair to say (and I haven't actually heard anyone say this), is that he lacks a 'second effort' in his board battles. He will fly in on a loose puck or to pressure or engage in a puck battle, but if he doesn't come up with the puck on that first try, he's done. As Andy Brickley is fond of saying, "this is a second effort league" and almost everyone, from stars to plumbers, give that second effort. The greats give a third effort. They get denied, they keep coming, over and over.

I think that's what the Bruins have been waiting to see develop in this kid. The talent is there.

This is the best post on Lysell so far, easily

“The best players keep coming and coming” - numero uno reason why Marchand went from a 50 point mid 6 energy guy to a 100 point elite all star

Lysell definitely has the tools and I’d love to see that 2nd and third effort a few times before the season is out

If he gives 50% of what Brad gives on a nightly basis, he will turn out pretty good. There aren't many players in the league that have Brad's motor and intensity.

Don't kid yourself.

Guys don't become 100-point players on extra effort. Marchand's speed, stickhandling and shot are most important. Yes, having the motor and sandpaper helped. That probably got him to the NHL. Playing with Pasta and Bergeron, along with his talent level, got him to be a (one time) 100-point player.

Lysell doesn't appear to have that kind of skill.

same issue Jake had for years but in all honesty, Jake didn`t even try to engage initially, he was the king of the fly bye`s
