Have we still not really had any comment or corresponding move? We waived a useful player that was easily claimed just for...like, vibes then?
This is definitely a “precursor” move to something bringing in significant salary. If it was just for a roster spot you could waive any of the 4th liners (who wouldn’t be claimed because they’ve played like shit).

The Johansen contract is officially off the books for us now? I missed that. For real?
As soon as a contract is terminated, it’s gone. The problem is that they are always grieved, a settlement is reached and some money is paid. The NHL then retroactively applies that as a cap hit. It’s almost a guarantee that Johansen will get something, so there will be a cap charge, though likely not the full amount. Trotz already dipped into that “slush fund” when he called up Del Gaizo and L’Hereux.

I cant see us going on this long road trip with only 6 defenseman. There has to be a corresponding move here. Either stastney is back, we are calling up a different dman to sit in the pressbox like livingstone/Blankenburg, or there is a trade to be done.

On the Johansen front, Nashville didnt terminate the contract. Seems odd to me that Nashville gets slapped with whatever settlement that Philly has to do.

We're on the hook for 50% of Johansen's contract.

Right now, he doesn't have a contract. Philly terminated it, and the league let them terminate it. So as far as anybody in the NHL is concerned, there is no contract. 50% of nothing is what we're on the hook for right now.

If the contract subsequently gets re-instated via the grievance process, well, then we go back to the previous state of owing 50% of whatever it gets reinstated at. Seems fair to me? :dunno:

There is a settlement process that has taken place before outside of the team on ice salary structure. Don't remember the details of the article but it had to have been posted somewhere here that explained the situation of another team.

I don't know what the odds are but I doubt any settlement the Preds are on the hook for is placed within the salary cap structure since there is already precedent against that. It is also possible that the Preds aren't on the hook for any of the settlement since their obligation ended with the termination of the contract and the grievance is with Philly.

Lehner this offseason might be who you’re thinking of.

I read something that made a lot of sense to me re: the Lehner termination was that with his history of mental health issues the NHL looked at this one differently and decided it would be best if they compromised and VGK still paid him but that it wouldn't count against the cap.

Joey's situation is different and will probably drag out through the entire appeals process.

Wonder if someone in the media will have the gumption to grill Trotz on this mess. Even if Dante asked to be traded/waived it's still Trotz's shit pile for allowing it to get this far that he had no value in a trade.

Or worse, he is so blind that he thought he'd clear. If he sticks to the story of thinking he'd clear, the fans and media need to start calling for him to be replaced. I know a lot of people were upset about Tolvanen, and that was bad asset management, but this is a whole nother level of ineptitude.

Pretty sure the local “media” people aren’t going to ask any questions that they think would rock the boat and get their credentials yanked. Unfortunately what little “media” we do have reporting on the Preds don’t do much reporting at all.

I doubt Trotz cared if he cleared or not. There was no "development" upside to Fabbro, so they probably are just happy to have the $2.5M Cap space back, there was no thought of him clearing to the minors like Tolvanen.

He might still have cleared, but if he did then Trotz would have just been able to use that as a "told ya so" to Fabbro/agent in response to their trade request?

I do hope Fabbro asked out. I'm still surprised he even re-signed, tbh. But he was in a spot where it's a-ok to ask out and nobody could possibly blame him. (Unlike certain Russian goalie prospects, say). If the Preds were trying to trade him, had no takers, and this was their way of trying to accommodate his ask, that would be a nice bowtie on things. (Team is still a little dumb for letting it get to this, but at least let a guy go this way if you don't see eye to eye. :thumbu: )

"Didn't care if he cleared, just wanted the $2.5M" just might be an even worse answer in my mind. I guess time will tell if I'm right but if he goes on to have a good career playing top 4 minutes this is a doozy of a gaf.

We'll get some opaque platitude-y nod to it from Mason during the telecast..."it's just really a hard thing to lose a good teammate like that, but the team just has to band closer together and find a way through it" or some shit like that, then hype up Schenn and Del Gaizo and it will be done. Then when we play the Jackets next he'll be talked about like some prodigal son that chose to leave us and we're so happy to see him back.

We got it in the last game, like I posted in the GDT, he used every word he could not to call Trotz a dumbass on the broadcast.

Of course this game he is with Columbus and he's had time to come up with something so it will probably be more in line with that.

We got some almost questioning of the waiver move by Mason. We don't have a rationale from the team.

Viqsi had to point this out to me, Fabbro never played in Milwaukee so he never played for Evason, but he would know about Fabbro as a young player.
Trenin played half a season for Evason. Dean would play him when other forwards were hurt.

How many years has Trenin played in the NHL? That alone should tell you volumes about Dean Evason's coaching abilities!!!

Edit: I checked. Trenin has played the equivalent of 5 NHL seasons so far.
Pretty good for a half-time minor leaguer!

The Preds are missing Evason being the coach for the Wild. He was good for 3 or 4 wins every season.
