to get under the cap and still have a player that can contribute. Also I have to ask. If Gardiner doesn’t go LTIR could the cats buy him out?
the Cats cant buy him out. A player has to be on the roster at the previous trade deadline to be eligible for the 2nd window buyout. I dont believe Florida has any one going to arbitration anyways.

I don’t believe Florida has anyone going to arbitration so they wouldn’t have the option of using the second buyout window. He wouldn’t have been on their roster long enough to be eligible, either.

Getting under the cap while taking back a bad contract (even if it is for the purpose of a buyout) seems counterintuitive.

They’re also giving up the best player in the deal which doesn’t make a lot of sense for a team trying to win right now.

Looking at those stats, I am beginning to question the 'he is a defenseman' part....
I understand that when it comes to defensemen publicly available analytic models are severely lacking. But his numbers are a special kind of terrible.

Those states don't have the power to do that, can't tax money earned in another state. They may grit their teeth, but nothing they can do. It's not circumvention of taxation, you're paying all taxes due where the money was earned, which just happens to be in another state. And the feds still get their cut.
An older article but has some good points (some athletes have been taxed on their bonuses but only under certain conditions….I’d suspect that Tkachuk’s representation navigated the key issues)

Key conditions:
The payment of the bonus is not conditional on the signee playing any games for the team, performing any later services for the team, or even making the team;
• the signing bonus is payable separately from the salary and any other compensation; and
• the signing bonus is nonrefundable.

Professional athlete tax returns must be an absolute bear to complete. Probably even harder for players who get traded or sign with a new team - potentially different home states, signing bonus/salary structure, across two seasons for the calendar year.

Now that I've typed this out I would love for a special where they get a young player to try to do it with some off the shelf software like TurboTax ha.

So, in 2009, Karaffa started ProSport CPA, an accounting firm that offers tax services and financial planning to athletes all over the world. Today, he says the company works with almost 1,000 clients, including pros in every major sports league in America and the rest of the world. Karaffa explains that ProSport understands the tax situations athletes might come across in the murky waters of contracts, royalties, and endorsement income. But more than that, he hopes to be a steadying presence in an industry that eats its young. (For example, Karaffa advises against opening a restaurant while you’re on your first contract.)

A major part of Karaffa’s business is the so-called “jock tax.” During the 1991 NBA Finals, California instituted a tax on the money that Chicago Bulls players earned while they were in the state to play the Los Angeles Lakers. This created a snowball effect, and today nearly every state — except for Florida, Washington, Texas, and Washington, DC — enforces a tax on visiting players. Over the course of an NBA season, a player might visit 20 different states, which means that they’ll need to file returns in each of them. That is a difficult thing to accomplish without the help of a company like ProSport, which has a deep understanding of every state’s tax code. We talked about that, as well as how ProSport recruits new clients, and the rude awakening young players often have when the taxman comes knocking in April.

LaFontaine's contract on CapFriendly. Either we gave him a 10+ games Games Played bonus (I don't think we did), or the formula that CapFriendly uses is somehow messed up and automatically puts it into Performance Bonus if the Cap Hit and AAV differ from each other.

Glad Dzingel found a landing spot. But his guaranteed salary is $200k while Noesen's is $550k. I think that says a lot about intended usage.
Momentum of the player affects that too. Dzingel has died off. Noesen on the up swing after that many goals

I think Winnipeg seems to be the one team that we are waiting on them to figure out what direction they are going in. I assume they are waiting to see if a PLD trade to montreal can be worked out first before altering their roster.

Now we wait for RFAs to sign and Arb hearings before the rest of the off-season can start. This crap is MLB like off-season slow.
