F Nicholas Robertson - Peterborough Petes, OHL (2019, 53rd, TOR)

More just curious why there’s a big gap in his goal vs assist ratio when his stats previous to this season have been a pretty equal 50/50 split? Has he just decided to do more on his own or has he accepted being the triggerman (due to his incredible shot) to some very good playmakers? A mix of both?

I think the answer is going to be a combo of skillset and situation - shoots a lot, touches the puck a lot within 15 feet of the net so shooting is a higher percentage option, linemates (particularly SDA) are very pass-first. I saw someone suggest that he might be forcing shots sometimes too, which I think was @93LEAFS who is generally really well informed on CHL stuff.

But I also think for context, looking a few years back and beyond for the point pace item will give better perspective because we don't know what that the ones on your list will be yet. I think that the teams who drafted every one of those guys is feeling very optimistic with those picks right now, and Robertson is actually #2 on that in ppg list if you omit Tomasino because he's only played 12 games. Generally 1.75ppg in a D+1 season in the modern era is a huge plus imo, then it comes down to the tools.

I have a hard time seeing Robertson not being an NHL'er with his skating/motor/tenacity, I'm having a hard time putting my finger on his upside too though. I'm sure 30 goal/60 pt first liner is within his ceiling, what's hard to know at this point is if a Brad Marchand time result is in the realm of possibility.

Tomasino has played 48 games, 12 more than Robertson
 
Robertson having a phenomenal year, producing well beyond expectations and many of his peers.

Yet there are people who come into this thread to discredit him on comparisons to his peers for PPG while he leads them all in goals and is near the top in PPG.

Plus he brings an edge and relentless work ethic. Couldn’t be happier as a Leafs fan. Top 10 in his class no doubt.

Who is discrediting him based on his PPG relative to peers? I don’t think I’ve seen that even once.

I really question why people feel the need to make things up.

Top 10 is definitely a stretch, but he’s likely in the 1st round now.

Literally you...

“point totals are great but not anything out of the ordinary”

Youngest player in the draft, was drafted 53rd overall. Calling it nothing out of the ordinary is discrediting his performance thus far.

Top 10 may be a stretch but it’s a projection based off potential.

True these guys are lower but guys like Tomasino (1.73) or Poulin (1.72) or Kaliyev (1.73) are so close that’s it’s really negligible and can change with every game.

I’be seen a lot of players make huge jumps offensively as a whole, but I’ve never seen such a dramatic jump in goal scoring ability. It’s very impressive.

This is exactly what I’m saying. People just look to get offended by anything and will take offense to non offensive comments.

In no way is what I’m saying a shot at him. I even specifically pointed out that he’s having an amazing season. I’m simply pointed out that scoring ~1.75ppg isn’t unheard of and happens often and that it’s even being replicated by like 5 guys in his own draft. His massive jump in goal scoring is what is crazy and it’s a very strange jump that I haven’t really ever seen before.

Top 10 is easily a stretch though and that’s going to lead to some overrating if you think so.

for sure, and Robertson is coming off a 5 point game so that would have just switched, just mean that I wouldn't count ppg as a tick against him in comparison to these guys. And definitely all of their teams are happy with those picks right now, they're all doing great.

Robertson's story is interesting as a very premature baby (like 5" shorter than his brothers still) and being so close to not qualifying for this draft. I'm hopeful those things just hid the production that comes from being an elite talent in his draft year, but it could still be a bit of a hot streak that won't sustain.

I think with the high floor, he will translate to at least a complimentary top 6 winger given who he'll play with if he's on one of those lines, I just don't see how a guy with good speed, tenacity, good offensive instincts for where to be and a very good release wouldn't succeed playing with Matthews-Marner/Tavares-Nylander. It would be a good story if he makes it too - "small kid from California defies the odds to become NHL star" I think is the kind of storyline that helps to grow the game in those non-traditional hockey markets

Does he have a shot at the Leafs opening roster? Will he still be a GPG player next season as well when the Petes aren’t as stacked? Interesting prospect. Definitely some type of NHL player in there though.

He was almost GPG when the Petes were sitting in the middle of the conference so I don't see why not...?

Reminds me of Rat. Would be cool if his career went the same direction...except maybe less of a late bloomer lol.

Ya that's a fair assessment.

I think he does have a shot to make the leafs next year, the easiest spot on the forward corps to make room for would be a high level LW, we have a bunch of very good ones but no all stars so its possible though probably not likely - Johnsson, Hyman, Mikheyev and Engvall are all well above replacement level NHLers so I dont think he gets a full time spot unless there's an injury or he gets a cup of coffee and is lights out.

I would bet against a goal per game pace repeating just because it's so rare, but I think he'll score a lot, definitely has the tools and mentality.
 
Robertson-Matthews-Marner will be fun to watch in the pre-season next year if it happens.
 
This kid is unbelievable. In any redraft he goes top 10. Tied for OHL lead in goals.

Obviously an insane season but top 10 is obviously a stretch. There are a ton of players from that draft having great seasons.

In no order:
Hughes
Kakko
Dach
Seider
Byram
Turcotte
Cozens
Caufield
Bjornfoot
McMichael

Are some obvious ones ahead of him.

Then you have players like Krebs, Poulin, Pelletier, Tomasino, Kaliyev putting up similar PPG but have much more history of being elite than Robertson but all play different style games.

Add in some other players that are harder to compare due to their league/position like Newhook, Podkolzin, Broberg.

Definitely a 1st rounder though.
