There's very little talk of Massimo Rizzo. He's having a pretty good season in Denver, currently sitting 12 points up on the 2nd place Carter Mazur who has been rising up the Wings prospect list.
What is the upside with this prospect? Is the NHL in his future?

Based on what he's done in college it's pretty clear he will get a shot in the NHL.

He’s a creative but undersized player who will have to convince that he has nhl speed. He can tear up the NCAA’s obviously. I’d hope we sign him and he’ll likely have to work himself up through the AHL level.

I'm not so sure about that.

He reminds me of being a Burnaby version of lite-Wright a guy who people had high expectations for then fizzled closer to the draft and sure he is scoring at Denver but the jump to the NHL will be a huge one for him.

Heck Carter Savoie outscored him at Denver while being younger and is finding the AHL transistion diffcult.

I was looking at his season today and he is a really skilled wizard out there but I don't think that the skating translates but time will tell.

Also I have no idea but there was a Burnaby superstar ball hockey player who played on the Beavers and they were the only team at that time, in the early 90s that had a Rizzo center that was as skilled as this guy, wonder if they are realted?

Why didn't Rizzo play during 2020-21?
I don't know any details but he was probably just injured or at least didn't want to risk an injury.

He wanted to join UND in both 2019 and 2020 but pulled out twice despite signing a letter of intent at least once. He had no offseason training for I think three years straight from 2018-2020 due to injuries. Missed camp and start of the season in 2018 and 2019 and had at least one hip surgery done. I think there was probably even more but I'm not sure.

So again...I don't know for sure but given the fact that UND just released him and granted his request to go back to juniors probably means he wouldn't have been healthy anyway. That was also a covid affected season so in most junior leagues not many games were played. Either Rizzo was injured when games were played or he just didn't want to risk another injury in order to be able to finally join UND in 2021.

So he went back to junior and just sat out the covid shortened 2020-21 BCHL season?

He went back to juniors for two years straight both in 2019 and 2020 despite wanting to join UND in 2019 already...both times citing injuries as the reason. Why he ended up not playing at all in 20/21 I don't know...but probably a combination of a shortened season and him not being healthy. Maybe precaution as well.

I haven't seen him play this year but his AHL season as a 23 year old seems to suggest that he's not going to become an NHL player.
