F Konsta Helenius (2024, 14th, BUF)

Live in Rutland Vermont but often in Utica for work. Caught both games last weekend. He stands out for always making the right play. Not a crazy athlete but understands the game and where to be.
That's him, alright. Antti Miettinen with a better shot.

Starting to pick up points, 5 points in last 3 games, and 8 points in last 11

Now up to 11 points in 26 games overall before heading out to the WJC, looks like he’s heating up at the right moment

Poor u20 in my opinion. He seems much slower than last year, also his poise or confidence seem to be somehow off. Atm against slovakia, he nagged to his linemates in pp, also his line has not clicked for the whole tournament.

Seems to be totally different guy compared to him in the year before.

Might be just a glimpse out of context, but I think he should have more of barkov-esque leadership. Do more, compete, let the results defend itself.

Ok, it was just the first period sluggishness. Glad to jinx this way

Buffalo should trade him to Pittsburgh. I really like this player as a potential 2nd-3rd line center/winger. Has good skill, plays with physicality at times, and has very good sense. He seems like a good kid as well. Just need to see him bulk up.

You don’t need him Buffalo. He’d look great in black and gold.

Ummm. No.

4 assists today vs. Sweden. Worth noting.

After a good start, pointless in 9 of his last 10 games

It’s a tough League for a 18 year old, but how is he playing overall?

Hasn't been at center in the top 6 of late - playing RW3 or RW4 though Rochester tends to balance the ice time going by eyeball since they don't track it anywhere I have access. He looks like he hit the wall and is trying to figure out his way through the fatigue. Funny enough, his departure for the U20's and subsequent unproductivity since returning also coincides with Noah Ostlund playing at just shy of a point per game pace as the 1C now.

Seems like he's back on track after a strong game against Cleveland and then this (again) against Belleville -

Goal -

His slap-pass assist -

And his stretch bounce pass to spring a breakaway -

That's his fifth multi-point game against Belleville this year. He has 1 against Utica and 1 against Hershey... and five against Belleville.

Progress update?

Eh, still kind of having strings of productive and unproductive play. I think one of the things that I saw from the beginning of the season as a concern caught up with him - his initiation of contact when carrying the puck. He was drawing players in to hit him and in a men's league, my concern was wear. And the period after the U20's for almost a month he looked like he'd hit the proverbial wall. The beating does not help him. There was a 12 game span where he picked up points in 1 game only (one of his many 2-point games against Belleville) and was mostly pedestrian for about 10 of those games IMO. He then started churning out points for a time again - 7 over a 6-game span - but that was more about both he and the Amerk powerplay taking off in that span. Only 2 of those points were at ES.

With Ostlund taking off, they also don't have the ease of slipping him into a scoring line position as easily. He's been more of a checking option and shuffled to RW down the lineup a bunch, though he's still getting some time on the PP (the Ostlund assist above being a nifty play as an example). Right now he's on RW with Dunne and AHL-signee Fiddler-Schultz, the game prior with Kozak and Fiddler-Schultz in more of a defensive matchup line. He also had NAK on his line while he was down prior to being flipped to the Rangers, though the roster shuffling with players going up and out of the lineup seems to have landed him back in a bottom 6 role right now.

He's responsible in the role, I don't see that they have to hammer off the edges of someone who leaves the zone early or isn't interested in battling for pucks near the bluelines like they have with some other guys - even if they did well with it, I still put Kulich's progress there on Kulich's desire to be a player and his coachability. Helenius already does those things. Now it's a matter of making a difference when he's playing down the lineup.

I wasn't a fan of pulling someone his age into the AHL. I don't agree with the Sabres urge to overload their AHL team with their high draft picks quickly (Wahlberg being the other) rather than spreading out the development time over a longer horizon. But that's me. He looks like he's young to me, even if he had a great season in Liiga last year, he's 6 months younger than the next youngest player in the AHL (Levshunyov) and that makes a difference.

Agree with this so much. What's the rush? The AHL can be a tough league- the refs tend to let a lot more go. Teenagers can get overwhelmed. I've had 4 year NCAA players tell me that the ECHL is a step up, nvm the AHL.
