F Jake O’Brien - Toronto Jr. Canadiens, GTHL U16 (2025 Draft)

O’Brien was a wildcard from this draft. There were a lot of rumours he would go to the NCAA unless he went to Brantford. He was seen as a very good offensive player due to his high IQ and ability to lead an offence. Turns out, he made it to Brantford and has made the transition to the OHL seamlessly. He is probably the second best player from this draft and has been an impactful OHLer since day one. He has amazing offensive awareness and understands the ins and outs of how to create offence in the OHL. He looks to be a top-10 pick in the upcoming NHL draft and we could see him end up with a 100 point season in the OHL. Truly a stud at this level and likely in the NHL.

You think he'd go to the NCAA next year or the year after with CHLers now NCAA eligible?

Third best after Hagens and Martone.

Definitely could see O'Brien go top-10, but the production should be taken with a grain of salt.
Why should the production be taken with a grain of salt? Not criticizing but the production is what it is, unless you’re talking about the actual strength of the league. Then again there’s a ton of draft prospects this year from the OHL.

He's the third leading scorer on his own team, and last time I checked a few weeks ago a disproportionate amount of his production was on the PP.

Idk what to think on this kid. Part of me thinks it’s very easy to look out 5-7 years from now and he’s put on some lbs and would go top 3 in a redraft and it looked so obvious with hindsight.

Then the other part of me sees him never truly filling out and struggling with pace of NHL. And it looks so obvious with hindsight.

Then every public scout I respect basically says the same thing

So who tf knows lmao. Biggest wildcard for me in this draft long term. Which of course means he will settle into being the most milquetoast middle 6er ever

Ngl he feels like a Ritchie 2.0. Both tall, slender, playmaking RHC except Obrien blew up his draft year while Ritchie went 27th and blew up his D+1. I think both could 2C but Ritchie feels more well rounded and Obrien is more of a powerplay guy.

Not a great comp. O’Brien way better vision and offensive ability with his puck skills. Like you mentioned Ritchie more well rounded.

There’s also a huge difference in blowing up your draft year vs your draft plus 1. Ritchie was a huge disappointment his draft year which made him slide!

The consensus does this every year. They try to wishcast one or two guys into being big risers. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.

I don’t see how you can have this guy above Martone. What does he do distinctly better other than his position is more valuable? I would give Martone the edge in every other category. Martone also had the same amount of points this season in 9 less games.

Better playmaker and passer. Vision and skating ability around equal.
