Not a habs fan, but can't wait to see this guy on the ice with Suzuki, caufield/laine and Hutson. Gonna be a fun squad to watch for a long time
100%. They will have a lot of unique talents between the group listed above and Slafkovsky. If they grab a true shutdown guy this summer, I think they will really be in business

Ok where is this, specifically Michkov saying it

Alright so you're saying you can't?

Not to derail the thread, but for the sake of clarity, Michkov's Russian agent said it a few days after the draft.
He said Michkov's favorite destination was Philadelphia and his NHL agent held special negotiations with them.
He said Michkov had no desire to go to Arizona. Washington too. (He later clarified Arizona is the only destination he would refuse to play).
The agent even said Michkov held a video conference with Anaheim, and the Ducks were very close to picking him.
It begins around 46.45

Okay, now back to Demidov.

The dream is Schaefer. Hopefully Rein becomes that #1 shutdown guy. Still need a 2C as well. Maybe Hage.

Slaf - Suzuki - Caufield
Laine - Hage - Demidov

Schaefer - Reinbacher
Hutson - Guhle

My favourite player at the top of the draft is Martone, and would love to see him in a Habs jersey.. but with the makeup of this team and core group (and already depth at W), I'd want either Hagens/Misa as that hopeful 1C or Schaefer as that ideal 1D that we're lacking. Having those 4 listed above (ideally all developed properly) mixed in with a couple of vets 3-4 years down the line would be an ideal homegrown core.

Shaeffer is the best this year..better than .Martone.
.Shaeffer will be become one of the 3 best d in the league very soon.

Just a special player.

What an absolute steal at #5. Just thievery. Damn.

The Russian factor definitely played into this. That being said I think 3rd is the highest he SHOULD have gone in a redraft. Celebrini still number 1 for sure. Levshunov id still take 2nd although I guess you could make an argument. Levshunov also holds the Russian factor but he was already in NA and committed to the AHL.

Hope all works out for Anaheim but Sennecke was absolutely the wrong choice at 3. CBJ was never going to take a Russian so I understand that based on their history with Russian resistance to sign in Columbus.

I mean Columbus currently has 4 Russians on the active roster and a few Russians in the pipeline, it’s got more to do with Columbus management drafting a big center than a smaller playmaker.

Personally thought, I would definitely draft Demidov over Lindstrom just for the injury history alone

I missed the game this morning but checking the boxscore summary I see was on the top line and was on the power play - what happened? Don't get me wrong - I'm happy Rottenberg has "seen the light" but now I'm worried Demidov signed a contract extension and I missed the announcement - please tell me Demidov is still holding his ground and will be in the NHL next season.

I do get that and I imagine they won’t avoid Russians altogether but using a top 5 pick on a player that may have no interest in the organization is more so what I meant

The reason why he didn't go second or challenge for #1 is not because he's Russian or because he had attitude problems (he does not). There's one reason and one reason only.

Scouts did not know with certainty that he could do against juniors what he is now doing against men. And now he's answered that question with flying colors.

What Russian factor does a Belarussian playing his 3rd season in NA have?

That being said, Demidov is worlds better than Levshunov. Levshunov isn't even a top 3 D from this past draft IMO.

Dickenson has been better. But he is leading the AHL in shots on goal from D and has been fairly good the last 10-15 games as a 19 year old he missed training camp. and missed the 1st 4-5 AHL games so he was rusty initially. by most accounts he has been pretty good once he has gotten up to speed. (had 2 games with 9 shots on goal) 6-2 210 RD that is a plus skater. every team is short RD. I would have taken demi. But I think he was pretty consistently thought of as the 3rd consensus prospect. he will never be a #1 but he might be a top pairing RD.

Definitely a possibility, he looks fantastic! Too bad he got hurt tonight. I'd love for him to be a cornerstone piece on the Habs backend. As for Martone, I don't think he's the best player in the draft, I just like him the best. I'm always drawn to bigger skilled wingers. Doesn't always work in my favour, but those Nash, Perry, Iginla types are just my favorite types of players.

Nonsense.

There's a reason why each of the teams above picked who they picked.

San Jose got the number 1 centre they desperately need to rebuild around.

Chicago saw a 6'2 right shot dman that they believe will develop into a number 1 dman. They picked him over the really good winger.

Columbus has always struggled with getting top centres. There was a big centre available to them and there was a really good winger available. I think they knew Demidov was the better player but they also understood that they need high end centre depth to win. They picked the centre.

Anaheim has young centre depth, they have a ton of skill. They didn't have a big power forward, a 6'4 beast that can do it all. They picked that over Demidov.

While Demidov was number 2 on my draft board, I completely understand the logic behind other teams picking who they did.

I'm sure with the power of hindsight, Columbus might be the only team that picked differently and that's only because of injuries.

MHL and VHL is not an easy scout but the kids who went in front of him are pretty good too

Also because he's a winger

So if the Hawks get the top pick this year do they pass on a player again who can play with Bedard and draft Shaeffer, who’s probably the BPA, or at least a clear future 1D, which Levshunov is not (a clear future 1D)?
