His rookie season in the AHL he was a perimeter player and looked to score goals the same way he did in junior. It wasn't until the 2nd half of his season that he changed his style and became more successful.

You clearly did not see him play in NHL, because HE IS line driver. He uplifted Nielsen and Helm and made that line much better and i mean defensive, puck possesion and scoring wise. Much better and more universal prospect with higher ceiling, than your overhyped Caufield and Kotkaniemi.

No he doesn't have a higher ceiling than KK or Caufield but I think their ceilings are very similar.

Nope they simply are not. Caufield has elite shot and that´s it, Zadina is superior playmaker with bigger physique and his shot is just as good. I am not even sure Caufield makes it to NHL. Kotkaniemi will be good two way center, but he is nowhere near as good offensively and is worse skater than Zadina.

He's a puck hound defensively, and I did not expect that. He also has an idea of what to with the puck once he gets it. His effort is outstanding. He might not end up being the pure sniper that everyone thought he could be, but he might end up being a far more all-around dangerous player than that. We talk about "game wreckers" in football, and if he keeps progressing, I see him being that kind of hockey player.

Why do you post when you don't konw what you are talking about????? All 3 are VERY good playmakers when they get the opportunity.

Nope Zadina is very good playmaker and elite shooter. Kotkaniemi and Caufield did not do shit hab fan. :S Kotkaniemi 2 games 0 points on much stronger team, Zadina on sucky team ppg player, get fkd. Nobody could send him puck to score so he just took over as playmaker on that line and he had 4 takeaways. That guy is the main reason Wings won that game.
 
the off season to get more physically matured and mentally stable was just what Z2 (Z1 was zetterberg) needed . his hustle , smarts , edges , hands were elite last nite . and its already obvious his shot is . this guys an o zone points monster , and an elite level pp guy . he can play 1st line mark my words . yes not a complete all around player , though his smarts / hustle / edges make him a force all 200' , but hes looking to be a serious o zone weapon . with a talented center a 80+ point guy . you can see now hes gotten more confident that hes seen the nhl landscape a few years . plus stronger and more able to deal with traffic

The puck hound comment is a good one. Apparently hes worked on that and its been the talk of wings camp/scrimmages. Then last night he strips the Canes player and sets up a goal. Almost looked Datsyuk like.

I think theres a small minority of thos board that was very vocal about Zadina being a bust and I think by the strength it looks like hes gained, theres gonna be some crow eaten this year. This is before he even has a good center to play with as well

Said it last night in the game thread, but he was the best player on the ice for Detroit. @newfy beat me to it, but that pick-pocketing to set up Ryan is the type of play Detroit hasn't seen since Datsyuk left. (Not putting Zadina on Datsyuk's level)

It's kinda funny, because leading up to the draft, all you ever heard about was his shot, and every time I see him in Detroit, what stands out is his playmaking ability. Of course, that's probably because he also gets relegated to the 2nd line and 2nd PP unit, both of which aren't nearly talented enough for him to set up in the circle and rip pucks at the net.

The Wings actually were on pace for the worst season of all time last year. Unless Greiss goes god mode I foresee another 31st place finish.

no they weren't

they were on pace for 45 points and a -141 goal differential over 82 games

1992-93 had TWO teams that finished with 24 points and a goal differential in the -190s in it's 84 game season

and there's probably even worse teams out there if you go back to expansion teams in previous decades but i'm too lazy to check that

His shot is definitely a weapon but ya, hes not as much of a shooter and is more of a well rounded player than was let on at draft time. I think a big part of that is the wings getting him to develop that all around game. Hes become a pretty tenacious forechecker with a great stick for takeaways and a dual threat playmaker/shooter. Part of the reason why his numbers werent crazy high in grand rapids. Hes going to be a better player for it though.

I think if you saw him on a legit line though where he wasnt the best at everything offensively, he would rely on his shot a lot more and use it more.

For sure. Again, I think a lot of it is his line mates. If you put Zadina on the late 2000s Babcock puck possession teams, where they had time to set up and cycle the puck, he could rip one-timers. The guys he's playing with just aren't good enough to establish dominance in the offensive zone like that.

Shit, they might not have even arguably been the worst Red Wing team ever. The 1976-77 Wings were 16-55-9 for 41 pts.

I can't believe anyone would use such an imbecilic argument. Farabee has 4 pts in 2 games. That must make him twice the player Zadina is.:sarcasm::eek:

I mean, the dude has been billed as a very responsible 2-way winger since his draft year...

That said, Hart trophy AND Selke votes are locked in for him. Also regarded as the best 6th overall pick in league history until Seider comes in later this season.

At the draft he was considered possibly the best goal scorer in the draft, i believe

Yes. And also strong defensively. These aren't mutually exclusive traits.

The early comparisons were Hossa. I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility. Hossa started out slow before he was the consistent 70+ point threat in Ottawa but was always solid in his own zone.
I'd be pretty happy with Buffalo Thomas Vanek. I'd say that's a safe comparison; 2-way goalscorer. Skating made him more of a powerplay specialist in his later years, though.
Another Wings poster said he reminded him of Ziggy Palffy last game. If he could become that player for Detroit then I'll be through the roof.
