no way. you pick BPA. i was so happy when philly took York out of the board to secure us taking a foward... why draft for immediate help when you draft a project? alot change in 3 years, we will know how romanov develops in his second KHL season with probably a bigger offensive role, Mete should take a step, maybe Bergevin will will make a trade... 2 years ago Montreal was a big concern at Center, now we have Kotkaniemi, Poehling, Suzuki, domi, Danault who are all able to play Center, 2 of my favorite player from the draft was Newhook and Caufield, i was torn appart but we had the luxury to pass on a guy like Newhook who will in my opinion be a huge steal, to draft a goal scorer... ( wich is Montreals biggest need in my opinion.) yeah he's small but he's also not one dimmensional like most goal scorer, the kid is gritty, hard worker, getting alot better in the Dzone, is a true competitor, slick hands, he's only downfall is literally 3inch... he can probably still grow an inch+ ish and with how the NHL is turning, i'm not even concerned, looking at how his frame and structure his made, he's likely going to be decently built and strong! Best shooter in the draft with much more to his package, no way we were passing on that.
YOU DONT PICK HIGH RISK HIGH REWARD PLAYERS IN TOP 15

period !

ya, the best goal scorer since Laine is a "high risk" it's not like he has no talent, he has ALL THE TOOL except 2 inches.

As someone who wanted to tank to be able to get a talent like Caufield, I am thrilled.

Should be dynamite next to Kotka.

Weird to use "best since Laine", when someone just scored significantly more goals in Liiga than Laine did.

Best American goal-scorer since Matthews, sure.

sure bud, he is a 40p player and might never make the NHL. Feeling better now ?

HE is a pure talent, just watch him shoot the puck

yes ok he will get free reign in nhl to get close to net at will

with newhook available on the table

whatever....

usndtp overated again

do you understand that that usndtp was stacked and played 2/3 against sub ushl teams ??
HF reacting to where Caufield gets drafted

Literally any other team: “He’s going to be so good! He will be scoring 40 goals annually. What a steal.”

Habs: “He’s so small and he sucks. The USNDTP was stacked. He won’t even be that good. It’s an accomplishment for a player his size to get drafted at 15”.

I don'T understand, it'S not like he shots rebound or just stand in front of the net, He does crazy one-timers, amazing aim, slap shot and he does everything freaking well.

MTL has been one of the very smallest teams for quite a while and hasn’t worked out too well for them. I figured a team that was large up front would have taken Caufield because they knew he would be sheltered and MTL would have looked to get bigger like Tampa.
Cooper made it very obvious that Tampa needed to get bigger up front in his interview.
all of montreal's small guys are much grittier than tampa's - domi, shaw, gallagher etc. that being said you don't ignore the talent..habs will find their size..poehling / kotkaniemi for instance, are both 6'2

are you that clueless ?
We already have plenty of potential 2nd line players in our pool. We don't need another. Taking the risk with a potential game changing winger who clearly has higher ceiling than Newhook (who I see as a 50-60 points player at his peak in terms of realistic ceiling) was the thing to do. He might bust, sure. Newhook might be more likely to make it to the NHL, sure. But Caufield is more likely than Newhook to be a game breaking player. One the Habs desperatly need.

Also, it's not like he's a perimeter shooter, or a player who just relies on his speed. He fights for his spots despite his size, is combative, and that's why he draws comparisons to DeBrincat.

Habs got the steal of the first round, period. It's hilarious how every year people put so much emphasis on how a team should be built based on the most recent Stanley Cup champ. There are many roads to Rome. There is definitely one constant on who wins the Stanley Cup -- who outscores the other team the most in 4 of the games. Caufield is an absolute goal-scoring stud as it is and will only get stronger, faster, and smarter. He also has a high compete level. There will be at minimum 5 or 6 fan bases pissed off at their GM several years from now for not picking this kid. Tremendous pick by Montreal.

he has the all -time US development record, he will score 40g+
That's cool, but I still don't think he's a better goal-scorer than Matthews. Kaliyev scored 50 goals in OHL, Draisaitl 38 in WHL, but Draisaitl's a 50 goal scorer in NHL.

Matthews scored 55 goals in 60 games in the same system on a good team. Caufield shattered his record to 72 in 64 games
