Is the Q the biggest winner of the CHL leagues with all the changes? I’m not taking in pure numbers - but just the potential elevation in the quality of players compared to the narrative of the quality before.

You not only now can nab all these New England players, you get to keep the high end regional talents in the league for their formative years instead of the old track of losing them to the prescribed college route.

Meyer and Scantlebury and other potentially joining Joseph? It could be a pretty banner draft crop year for Q prospect, no?

Short answer is yes. Prior to the rule change, the Q was losing a handful of top Canadian talent to the USHL (even the BCHL) and almost no Americans were playing in the league. Now, virtually every top Canadian Q player and a growing contingent of good American players are choosing the league. The only issue for the Q now, as is the same for the other two leagues in the CHL, is losing the very best 18 and 19 y.o. to the NCAA.

Their was talk that they might play a Nahl schedule too ? My view it might be better go to CHL and be litle protected playing on a line with 19 year kids versus whole age group being isolated . They will say it has worked great in the past but I think the top end kids really benifit because they are that goodcan handle it but the rest of the team i'm not so sure.

I can't imagine kids would be excited to go spend a season playing an NAHL schedule when they could just play in the USHL or CHL instead.

The NAHL is a largely obsolete league.

The past season they’ve lost 19 yo Justin Poirier, who was a big loss but he was the only one. Mathis Langevin wasn’t much of a loss.

So far they’re losing more 19 yo in Lacelle, Villeneuve, Morrison, Van Der Kaaij and Steiner (are there others?). Desnoyers doesn’t really count as he’s going to play in the AHL or the NHL. They have yet to lose an 18 yo.

At this point it would benefit everyone more if the powers that be came to realize that it’s no longer separate Canadian and American development systems. Drop the hyper nationalism and embrace the fact it’s a North American system now.
Yep it’s the best path for everyone. No point in playing a second year in the NTDP. Probably not much purpose in playing 4 years junior if you’re a high level player either.

Times are a changin’ that’s for sure

Rocco Pelosi I think should try out the OHL. Very highly touted as a 15 year old. Had a shitty year this year with the NTDP. Seems a bunch of kids his age group have jumped him.

Don’t see the benefit in going back to the NTDP he probably needs a change in scenery

Play in Oshawa 1/2 years then try out NCAA. Who knows maybe he still has an NHL future? Excited to see Meyer for sure. May go down and see him live in Gatineau

Maybe has an NHL future? Writing a kid off for a bad 16 year old season is nonsense

I hope he explodes next year but can’t see it with the NTDP

In Oshawa he should be one of the main guys, maybe the main guy if Rogowski and Griffin leave/get traded. He should strongly consider that option even if for 1 year

I don’t think he’s leaving. But I could see him going after next year anyways. He isn’t a guy that will be ready for the NCAA at 18.

As a longtime CHL and hockey fan in general, it's great to see the Q starting to develop great players again as they have had some down years recently.

Saint John is loading up for a run next season. It’ll be interesting to see Alexis Joseph and Carter Meyer in the same conference, both playing for competitive teams.

I think so. While the OHL has an outstripped advantage with its claim in US territory, it was arguably stronger to begin with. The WHL to lesser on both accounts but the USHL being based in the WHL's territory keeps the kids on the fence likely in the US. The Q however is closer to the kids from NE and was a weaker league to begin with, so the it's going to get a shot in the arm from any talent from NE that goes up there.

What's going to expedite this process is the USHL drafting like it did in the Phase 1 last month. The USHL chose certainty (via geographic location-ala MN) over talent, (based in Michigan, NE, etc.). There were some high-end kids from both regions who have proved capable at AAA/Select Camps/Nationals over the last few years who could in all honesty be drafted earlier in their OHL/QMJHL drafts than they were in the USHL draft which says a lot to those US kids.

While the USHL expedited its demise in May, I think the Q gains the most from an infusion of American talent, relative to the O or W, given it's proximity to a more viable alternative (QMJHL vs USHL) and the USHL's signaling it gave NE kids in the phase 1 draft this year.
