What happened with this kid? He's had such a blah season stats wise, what's been the issue for him? It seems like most of the hype for him going into this season has dissipated as he's not really talked about much.

Will he still go top 10 based on name recognition alone?
Yager is an intriguing case because a lot of the thread hype in the prospects forum tends to evolve around statistical outliers, and in Yager's case the production is neither incredible nor below par. A lot of posters still have him in their top 10s.

My opinion on Yager is quite different from his fans, but i do think it is a fair point that his production should not be the full assessment here.

It's more the tools and projection than it is the "name recognition". No GM is going to take a prospect because they were the most well known at ages 15-16, but they might pick one who shows a skillet that is translatable like skating and shooting. Again I'll use barzal as a comparable , guys who were once projected to go top 3-5, didn't necessarily produce like some other top picks in their draft years, but still had the skill set you want in an elite prospect. Barzal slipped and maybe he shouldn't have, not sure yager will have the same NHL career but that's the vibe I get from him as a prospect.

He definitely top-10 talent of this incredible draft. But now he closer to 10th overall, than 5.

Yager spent most of the year working on improving his playmaking game, which he has, he's been unlucky with his goal scoring this year and been frustrated to not score more.

But this isn't a case of a player not getting better, he's rounding out his game. He's still a top 10 pick for me, all day.

Great speed, he's tenacious, he's a lethal finisher, he's adapting his off the puck and playmaking game. It would be insanity for him to go below Barlow just because Barlow produced more.

Similar in a way to Holtz is viewed now. Good shot and scoring ability, probably a RW moving forward, and not the best skating.

His skating is really good, it’s one of his strengths. I think his main weakness is that he’s just not that creative/dynamic offensively. He makes good, simple plays, but he really only “creates offence out of nothing” with his shot and skating.

Most guys who end up as star NHL forwards are more creative. Passes that you don’t see coming, east-west movement with the puck that gets the defence scrambling, subtle 1-on-1 moves to get defenders off balance, etc. I don’t see much of this in Yager’s game, which could prevent him from becoming a star player.

Well said.

I think Yager's shot is excellent, as is his forward mobility. The rest of his skating is fine, I don't think it gives him a huge advantage at the NHL level but it's definitely more than good enough.

What stands out to me the most is his how differently he is viewed depending on the individual. There are people on my team's board who still view him as a bonafide top 10 pick; one regular poster even has him ahead of Fantilli. This is matched by the high class pundits who generally have him top 10 (McKenzie, Button, Cosentino). Others have him in the 11-17 range; the metrics crowd tends to have him in the 20s.

Imo

I think he should be in the 8 - 12 range but he may drop.

We have the big 4, followed by Smith, Benson, Reinbacher.

Then 8-12 Yager, Sale, Cristal, Dvorsky, and Gulyayev.

If you actually watch Yager he makes a lot of great passes his teammates just can't finish and Moose Jaw just isn't clicking like they should this year. He'll be a center and is one of the best skaters in the draft

His main weakness is simply strength. Just needs to physically mature and put on muscle which will come in time. Skillset is one of the best in this insane draft

Still a lack of points to be in the top-10
Drafting would be easy if you just look at point production. Actual context of why points are coming or why they are not coming matters a lot too. I'd say his point production is pretty much fine right now.

Dach was seen as a boom pick whose production did not match his potential in his draft season. His highs were so very high. I was not his biggest fan but I understood why people went crazy over him.

With Yager, he will have to improve his strength and conditioning to be in the NHL but I think he is far closer than Dach to being what you're seeing. Whether his skillset is desired in the top 10, top 15 or late first round is bound to each team's discretion.
