Not my recollection. He was a bit of a novelty coming so high out of the BCHL, but Kane was the overwhelming consensus #1 from what I saw.

I remember TSN did a feature on the "big 3" and proclaimed each one had a case for 1st (Kane, Turris, JVR).

Seemed like most people deep down knew Kane's offensive skill was too high to pass on though

Kane got knocked a bit because some people thought some of his numbers were hollow comparing him to another flashy player from New York state who previously played for the Knights in Robbie Schremp. Although, I don't remember 2007 having much-hyped. So many people were looking forward to 2008 and 2009 due to Stamkos and Tavares. In retrospect, it was obviously misguided overlooking Kane's destruction of the CHL. People were also disappointed due to some of the highly hyped players entering the year not living up to expectations (primarily Esposito but also Logan Couture who battled mono).

This draft was covered in-depth by Gare Joyce in his book Future Greats and Heartbreaks.

I think he is one is the most exciting prospect since Matthews and Laine. He oozed hockey IQ and totally destroyed my fellow countrymen tonight by himself. He's got Sebastian Aho's brains with smoothest hand you could find. I have been following him since the start of the season and he is gonna destroy defences next year. Such an exciting prospect to watch.

Of course we can all agree that Lafreniere is an amazing talent offensively. The way he dictates the game through his intelligence and skills is very noticeable. However, I am curious on what you all think of his defense. I would love to hear some scouting reports regarding his strengths and weaknesses surrounding his defense.

Damn, he's sick. You can tell he has tried emulating Crosby growing up, and to great success. Similar player. Plays a bit more of a skilled game, but still brings the grindy element (not as great yet obviously) as Sid. I think this kid is way up there in those power rankings of #1 overalls.

McDavid

Crosby
Ovechkin

MacKinnon
Tavares
Stamkos

Can't wait to see what team he goes to.

He looks to be physical and willing to check, but i don't want an elite scorer mucking it up with the Wilsons of this world. You can always pick up other guys to do that.

I would actually love it if MTL got Lafreniere. Would like it even more if my team got him, and traded him to MTL for a king's ransom.

He's a phenomenal forechecker. He's not going to be the first forward back on D, but he'll force a lot of ozone turnovers with both his body and his stick.

Watching him play in this tournament there’s been plenty of times where’s been the first forward back and broke up plays

Lafreniere really is awesome. No doubt in my mind he will be an NHL star for years. If he could get away from Hayton he’d have 5-10 more points. God Hayton is a selfish overrated player.
