Excellent Katie Strang article about this season, etc

this has been one of my favorite pieces by espn in a long long time.

QUick question, in regards to the jarett stoll incident any time it is mentioned they always say it was an unofficial end of the year get together but no other players are mentioned as attending. Do you guys know of any players who were in vegas at the time?

I am really surprised it came from ESPN and her. She is a pretty big Rangers honk

That was my thoughts too.

Good summary of the season

However, she painted Lombardi as some character in a Samuel Beckett play, and makes it seem like he needs to see an entire team of psychiatrists.

Sincerely hope he gets the help he needs.

There was a piece that mentioned a couple of other players, but I think before we go any further with the guesses we need to post a link confirming, because we're borderlining some issues here.

Totally agree though, kind of a gutwrenching read if you put yourself in Lombardi's shoes.

To the other posters re: DL being mad about the party, I also seem to remember reading management wasn't happy with Stoll in particular for being over the season so quickly (mgmt thought they'd be madder about it). Will look for that link when i have a few moments too.

TMZ lol. They named two players out of "more than a dozen." Really.

He's a little spotlighty here but I took that as he's taking full responsibility for everything to try to take some of the heat off of the players.

He's a great GM. Absolutely HOF worthy as a GM. Hope AEG gives him a lifetime contract.

I am shocked that Strang wrote that article. She has come a long way from reporting nothing of substance on the Isles and then becoming a Rags shill.

Glad I did not look at who wrote it before i read the article. Otherwise I might have avoided it.

It sounds like the Kings will rebound from this season with a hardened resolve. Getting the Voynov and Richards issues resolved are obviously paramount.

If I'm Lombardi, I'd be even more ticked off knowing that some of these guys are out partying and celebrating so quickly in Vegas soon after their season ended. At least wait a bit, let some time pass before doing something like that.

In a sense it shows that these guys were just waiting for the season to be over with and that they can't wait to party. And look what happened to that idiot Stoll. Good riddance to him. This team needs less distractions off the ice. Weed out the fools who are likely to blow their money up their nose and on other drugs.

I agree. As a side note, reading that reminded me of this scene from Moneyball.

A very good article, lots of color and depth to it and some nice comments, insightful.

However, you might might to examine that 'weeder', since one of the players identified is the best player on the team. ANd that group that was left, those dozen others, they kept partying all weekend, the arrest didn't daunt them.

I understand DL bleeds for this team, and his heart is in the right place when he's going to bring in someone to talk to the team about drug use. And I'm sure they'll listen and nod and say all the right things to the reporters afterwards , if questioned. But this isn't High School, they're adults and you can't control what they do on their own dime with a pep talk. Coke use had been rampant in the NHL for years, and the league looks the other way for the most part. Because some of the stars that they use to fill seats, are users.

Three or four years ago Todd Fedoruk spoke of it in an interview and said even with Coke in his system, he never failed a drug test. It's just too hard to police.

I am really glad that we traded Face Wash for you.

Link?

I read...something earlier about a growing sentiment re: recreational drug use, though. I'll see if I can find that too. My list of "need to posts" is getting long today!

This is a team in which individuals are loath to seek credit or place blame -- where accountability is paramount. That has been a strength of the club, Brown said, and it will continue to be. No one is afraid to get in each other's face, whether it's to chastise a teammate for a lackluster effort during a game or to make it clear a poor off-ice decision was unacceptable.

"Quite honestly, I'd rather have a team that cares enough to tell each other to f--- off than a team that wants to be just OK and be friendly," Brown said. "Because at the end of the day, I want to win, and if you're not willing or able or you don't have that fire to tell me I'm screwing up, then you're probably not helping us to win."

Pretty solid quote from the captain. Very good article, and as open and as candid as I've ever read about the team.

I have a feeling no matter who stays or goes we'll be seeing a much different team next year, a better more focused team competing for the cup again.

Several p , like the LA Suntimes, nesN, and almost every blog or small periodicals
but all seem to be feeding off the TMZ piece that mentioned it. And that shouldn't surprise anyone, why wouldn't they party, it's why they were there. They weren't there to see Wayne Newton.

very good article. much of it has been known or speculated around here, but 'here' is a small universe of Kings die-hards. much of this is most likely news to the other 98% of the folks out there.

aside from the Brown and Lombardi comments, the rest wasn't new to me. the candidness and outright honesty from the two of them are what made the article readable.

good piece by K Strang, i've never had issue with her style or substance. to me she is one of the few on ESPN that is dependable when it comes to the NHL

I hope you're right about that. This team, right from the get-go of this past season were just not into the game, as most of us could see very early on.

Thanks!

Knew we had it in writing somewhere, just thought it would be important to have the link handy since it's been referred to here and elsewhere (that other players were present and who exactly, etc.).

Nailed it. I'll bet Dean felt like doing that.

You sure? Wayne is quite the showman.

:help:

Too funny.

You're right. This season just felt...off.

What gets me is that this team is supposed be a family that really cares about each member. If my friend gets arrested (and obviously ends his career with our team,) I'll tell you what, I'm not going to keep partying. Party's over. Time for you and the friend to go home and for you to focus on being supportive for him.
