thats the better argument. Its not that they dont spend. Its where they spend. Not good IMO.
Exactly.

I think they look at the big picture and don’t weigh everything out properly. Mistakes are sometimes made, it’s not an easy thing to do being Nostradamus

Letting him go without replacing was done to line Jacob's pockets.

I watched the Islanders today for the first time in a while, losing yet another game, this time to Calgary. It was nice to see Chara again. He looks pretty much the same as ever since he cracked 40. It was a reminder too that despite how much the Isles have sucked this year he still has a better plus/minus than any Bruins defender except McAvoy and Gryz. And that he was basically pushed out of Boston supposedly to make way for youth, but his direct spot is essentially currently being filled by a 29 year-old trade-in who costs 3 times as much while not being as good and bringing none of Zee's leadership and gravitas.

Which is not to hate on Forbort, who's fine for what he is, or to resent Chara being let go, which was a logical enough decision in principle. Rather it's to reflect on Sweeney making one of his many moves that was right in theory but botched in execution, like Ritchie for Heinen or giving washed up Foligno a bad contract.
I don't believe Chara was let go. Pretty sure they wanted to re-sign him, but told him he is no longer a top pair D'man, and he said no thanks. I'd rather they be upfront and truthful to him so he can decide , rather than sign him and have him play 2nd or 3rd pair and be pissed.

two dimes and a nickel, or a Quarter ?
Too often the Bruins go from a Quarter to two dimes and a Nickel, and while the 2 dimes and a
nickel add up to 25, with players and skill and the players production, it doesn't add up.

He was not pushed out. IIRC the Bruins offered him the same (maybe slightly more) than Washington, but wanted Chara to play a reduced role. Chara didn't want that and decided to go to Washington....where he played a reduced role and ranked 5th among WSH defenders in ATOI. This year with the Islanders he's playing nearly identical minutes in (again) a reduced role.

You're reading too much into that sentence. I'm not saying he was forcibly removed from the organization. Just that he was removed from his existing position because they wanted to prioritize giving more TOI to younger players. As you say, Sweeney offered him a reduced role, which Chara declined, as he was always likely to do. The reason Zee then went and took that exact same reduced role elsewhere is obvious - pride. Completely different taking on a smaller role in a place where you have no pre-existing history or standing to one in which you have been the captain and backbone of the defense for over a decade and where taking a lesser position looks much more obviously like a demotion. In Chara's position I'd have left too.

But again, the point isn't that Chara left. No issue with that, the time was right to do it. Cannot stress that enough. The problem lies in what came afterwards, as I've already explained. Another Sweeney botch.

Screw him. He shits on the Bruins.

The Bruins shit on him worse. Sinden screwed him bad, promised him if he signs for cheap, he will be Bruin for life, which is all Phil wanted. A month later, Harry traded him. Phil has a right to his anger.

Great article.

Please retire and come back to Boston, Zee!!

Definitely a great article. He has so many interests, who knows what he will do after his playing career ends, but if he decides to stay in hockey it would be amazing if he brought his intellect and insight to the Bruins organization. Dude is so driven that I think he will be successful in whatever he does. I remember seeing an interview with him when he was a teenager in the AHL. Reporter asked him what he liked to do in his free time. Z said, "Working out." Reporter asked him what he liked to do other than working out. Z said, "Working out." He was a tall gangly teen at that point and knew he had to put on weight to be more successful. Played some NHL games that season with the Isles, learned his weaknesses, kept working out like a mad man, and the next season started blossoming into a full time NHL player. Z is an impressive person. Not telling Bs fans anything new.

Well, Sinden was the face of the Bruins for years, Phil's got no other basis for liking the team. Sort of like people still hating Jacobs, when he's spent to the cap for a decade and a half.

LOL.

The cap is bad for the Bruins. That's why Jacobs loves it. He can "spend to the cap" and get praised for doing so, even though the cap is well below what the Bruins can afford.

overall not good

I did Detroit, Toronto, Chicago, Rangers, Montreal - original six last 10 years and will publish

Bruins actually come out really well

bottom line unless Chara type super star that picks you stay away

draft & develop

damn lucky they gave 3/4 of the star blueprint covered 25 and under
G Raycroft
D McAvoy
W Pastrnak

So you'd rather be in a league where the Leafs can spend anything they want and Jacobs is still cheap? The cap is good for the Bruins while Jacobs is the owner.

I'd rather someone else owned the Bruins.

But if this is what we're stuck with I'd at least hope Bruins fans didn't praise him for "spending to the cap."
