This organization doesn't have the depth at C to let Evans walk.

Even more now with the Dach news and Dvoram leaving.
was thinking the same thing. Can only trade Evan in a pacjage with Armia to get a potential 2c now. Any other deal make zero sense. Can go into next season with a potential mistery 2c, Newhook, Beck and Kapanen

None of those guys, are a 2C with enough offense.................we need to make a deal now, or at the Draft.
Dach will be a winger next year, for us, or another team.

For sure, but even with a new 2C, which may be a young-ish guy too, you can go into next season with on Suzuki as a vet C.

They'll find a 2C in the offseason if need be.. there's no need to sign Evans to a 20M contract.

If this wasn't our own player and we signed him to a free agent deal to that, we'd be collectively pissed. There'd be serious questions about his lack of production in his previous non-contract years.

I like Jake Evans and he's a good story but that's too much money.

Hughes imo won't trade Evans and probably won't re sign him. Consider him a rental
That's very possible. I think if we're within 3 points of a wild car spot come deadline day...we might keep'em all for a run.

I went on puckpedia and looked at NHL centers that are 28 years old this season. Evans is paid near the bottom of the list 22nd out of 29. Hes tied for 14th with 27 points. 14th place is Colton Ross in salary at $4M cap hit per year for 4 years. However they bought his year 27, 28, 29, 30 years.

Of players on expiring contracts in this group, Evans is making he most while also having the most points of that expiring contract group.

I strongly believe 4M a year is too much. If he really wants 5 years, it needs to be a slidding scale salary. say 5m next years going down to 2.5m to balance around 17m over 5 years, similar to what I said earlier in this thread. The habs shouldn't do this easier in my opinion. He won't be a Habs for 5 years if he is paid more than 3m a season for those years. He will be replaced in year 3 and traded if they can't slot him back to the 4th line.

Personally I want to see this team in the mix until the last game. I also hope they trade no-one.

I fear that short sightedness will be at the detriment of the long term goal.

What kind of return is worthwhile? Just curious as to what people expect and what is acceptable. Habs have 7 picks in the 1st 3 rounds in June.
What is shortsighted about wanting to instill a winning culture?

It's a business, it's all about assets. This team has oppurtunity to collect assets and then it falls back on Hughes to turn them into concrete players that help this team win long term.

I feel you when you talk about a winning culture, I don't agree that missing the playoffs on a year with UFAs will deflate the team. I think the players understand the business of hockey and may be more upset that guys leave on their own to put them into a weaker position.

We will have to disagree. We see things differently.
