Yes if the NTC lowers or dissappear in year 3-5.

He would be our 3rd C until Beck/Kapanen takes over, at which point you can trade him.

Someone for half of that won't be anywhere as good as Evans.
You can find someone just as good for the same amount but half the term which fits more with what this team wants to do.

And Beck is more ready to be an NHL 3C than Evans is right now.

I don't think we do need him for more than 2 years. We've got Kapanen and Beck coming in as RHCs, then Hage. We do need a LHC to balance things out a bit but that's hopefully where Florian comes in

You can trade him in year 3-5 then.

If he goes, they need to get someone else this summer unless they plan to run with 2 rookies as 3/4 C. I don't think there is much in FA that would offer the same level of ability as Evans at a good price and this isn't even counting the "intangibles" like team familiarity.

Oh I agree, I don't like the 5 years, 3 would be perfect but it ain't gonna happen and look at the market, their ain't many options for quality center.

I think Evans stay hopefully for 4 years but expecting 5.

I don’t see a problem with that salary or term . After all it’ll be less then what we signed Joel Armia for or got to pay Christian Dvorak cap % wise . Just have to front load as much as possible ,so as to make him tradable later if his play falls off to much .

The term is not an issue as long as the trade clauses are decent. Not stressed at all about finding a spot for him if he gets outclassed.

Beck is not better than Evans right now.

The only teams that want to add good 4th liners will be contenders. And contenders won’t have $4m in cap space to add one.

Can you though? How many contenders are knocking on doors looking for a 4th line C at 4M for 3 more years?

We're almost out of the water with our current albatross contracts, let's try not to add another one for a while.

If we trade him, we’ll need a player just like him. And we lost Danault for $500k. Why penny pinch here
Danault started at 27 goals, then 18, 17 and is now down to 5 goals this year

He still has another 2 years left @5.5 million per

It’s not the worst contract in the league but that was always gonna be the problem- the length was never gonna provide value

It will be the same with Evans, who brings even less than Danault

An easy pass....

Has Evans shown anything close to what Danault had shown? Not only was Danault a better PKer, better at faceoffs and better as a shutdown centre, he was very clearly better offensively. It’s not the same thing at all.
Ya. And Danault got paid more money in a smaller cap for it.

Jake is a valuable piece. Plays a responsible game. Pk's.

I'd do it. But like others I'd try and bargain it down to 3.5 AAV or 3.75. Push comes to shove. I'd be okay if we signed him for 5 x 4 though.

This is true. Which is why I’d like to keep him. But not at any cost.

Hopefully this is just negotiations.

He’s very obviously a 4th liner. Hes a 3rd liner on a bad team like the Habs because of our lack of depth. On a contender he is not playing on a 3rd line. Or else they aren’t contenders.

He's not that different from Lars Eller who got bigger deals than that relative to the cap and had no issues getting value.

I think you're both underrating Evans' ability and the rise of the cap.

By the time he's getting traded, that deal will be the equivalent of a 3 million deal today, possibly less.

I could live with 4x5. We'd have a shutdown PK specialist locked up for the rest of Suzuki's prime and you can plug him into the 2C spot short term as a shut down center if need be.

He's not a 4th liner and 4 millions will not be that much with the rising cap.
Talent-wise he is a 4th liner on a contender, which this team is far from.

Only reason we're even entertaining this contract is because he's riding a shooting percentage double his career average and a 12.3% OISH% which is 34% higher than his career average.
