I hear you. And I don't fully disagree with you. However, the arguments I'll make is that you know what you have in Evans. He fits well into your line-up already, so you have that answer. He's someone who can move up in case of injuries. He's great on the dot. He's elite on the PK.

I'll also add that I think next year, he will be the 3C (replacing Dvorak who will either be traded or just let walk). And I believe Beck or Kapanen will be the 4C. Of course down the road, those guys will move ahead of Evans.

Also, with the cap going up significantly over the next few years, some of the top 4th liners will start making that kind of money. And I think Evans is one of those top 4th liners.
A case can be made for a trade, and for keeping him.............it's a tough call.
I would think that if he doesn't return what the boys want for him, they could keep him, and use that as ammo to get him down a bit.

It certainly looks like a trade real soon.............someone will overpay for him.

I really don't see the problem here. It's the new norm. He's not old. We need players like that. Homegrown. Great story. Faceoffs. Insane PK. Some offense. Great chemistry with Heineman. You could most DEFINATELY argue that Armia wouldn't survive a 5-year contract...but Evans? Come on. If the only thing we're getting is a late 2nd....there's just no way we win that trade unless somehow we are able to turn all of our draft pick, including that one into another top 10 pick.

sign him, that's fair for one of the best shutdown 3C/4C's in the league

enough of this garbage where we don't sign quality players who grew up with the team/are a big part of the culture, learn from Danault and Lehk

ideally we want him at 3.5M but we're not talking about Gally's 6.5M here, it's just a 500k gap

Bizarre how folks are claiming he’s a 4th liner. Like all teams stats are posted, 30 ES points and elite PK makes you a top 9 player. He would be CAR second best center. I can start listing a dozen teams, some of which are contenders, where he would play top 9 but this info is all public so please some research first.
He is a 4th liner on a contender.

You are helping my point because Cizikas deal in 2016 (3.35x5) was the equivalent of a 4.38M x 5 years deal.
How is it helping your point if the Isles are the worst managed team in the NHL and are mediocre specifically because they have given silly contracts to bottom 6ers like this.

People need to realize 4 million per year is not the same as it was, and will be even lesser with the upcoming massive cap raises. Many people's brains seem stuck with a yardstick that belongs in the past. This isn't 2020 anymore.

On a 92 mill cap, 4 mil is the average player salary on a full cap team. 23x4=92. You can fit 23 players making 4 mil each.

On a 115 mil cap, which will soon be upon us, that average goes up to 5 mil.

I though Evans would be asking much closer to 5 mil, so if this rumor is true, 4 mil is actually quite digestible. As long as he doesn't have a NMC over the last 2-3 seasons, the 5 years aren't really a problem. He's BFF with Suzuki to boot.

He doesn’t shut anyone down. He’s a very good PKer, but he’s not someone you’re matching up against Auston Matthews.

Honestly, that doesn't bother me. Out of all the UFA's, Evans is the one I'm most interested in extending. Ideally it would be a little less in terms of cap. But the term doesn't bother me at all. And even at 4M, I'm willing to hold onto Evans.
That. I like his game, he's a lot more confident with the puck, a very good defensive player. Keep him, give him what he wants and the last season, trade him, so that it would be as a 4 years contract.

NHL teams have 23 players on the roster, 100% of the cap means they allocate ~4,34% per player for it. But in reality the top players (top 6 line, top Ds, star goalies) will take a bigger cut than 4.34%, which means the bottom 6 are <4.34%.

A quick check on capwages shows that bottom 6 players are usually under 3% of the cap because the top 6 take a bigger cut. People doing above that are usually labelled overpaid (see Dvorak, Gally and Anderson).

$4m is 4.1% of a 97m cap, 4% at 100m cap. It doesn't go under 3.5% until it hits 115m cap.

The salary cap increase will mostly favor the top players.

If he’s worth that $$$, then he’s definitely worth a 1st. Right??
I almost wrote that Evans wanted to be paid like a guy who is worth a 1st in the trade thread earlier.

I'm not saying he's Danault (1 of the best top 6 shutdown C's) but it's not like he's gonna get exposed playing Matthews.. you don't need to worry about him when he's on the ice and that's what you want in a bottom 6'er, at the end of the day no one can really shut down the elite players completely

and ffs Marcus Kruger got 3.1M for 3 years in 2015/2016, Evans is a better player

If what LeBrun has been saying is indeed accurate, that the Habs and Evans are still far apart on a contract extension, and this is what Evans camp is asking and won't go for less in either salary or term then I don't see Hughes caving and Evans will get moved soon.

With the cap increases coming it's not really an unreasonable ask from Evans side but with prospects like Beck, Kapanen, Hage, etc coming soon I don't think Hughes will sign him for the term he's asking for here, if it's indeed true.
