I would try to negotiate to 4x4, but Evans should not say yes to this. This is his pension fund lol, he never earned more than 1,7M during his career so far. This is the only big payday of his career so he should probably try to get as much as he can.

Honestly, that doesn't bother me. Out of all the UFA's, Evans is the one I'm most interested in extending. Ideally it would be a little less in terms of cap. But the term doesn't bother me at all. And even at 4M, I'm willing to hold onto Evans.

Same here. The team needs veterans and if they let Evans go, they'll be looking for a player like him in 2 years, only he'll cost more.

I'd say sign him. Yes, an extra year too much. Front load the contract and give him trade protection only in the first 3 years.

5 years is ages 29, 30, 31, 32, & 33. I think he's probably playing at the same level the next 4. He might even at 33. That's not that old these days. He seems to keep himself fit.

Issue is if they think they can get that contract from someone else in UFA with lower tax rate.

No thanks. Too much for a 4th liner. A really good 4th liner, but still. Can find someone for half of that.
Hasn't ge been a really good 3rd liner this year? Isn't Dvo the 4c?
Evans is on pace for 38 points and is doing well on the PK.

4 years would be ideal, because players seem to decline after 32 years of age. Evans will be 29 in the first year of his deal.

I don't think it's too long or too much but perhaps management doesn't see him sticking as a 3c for that long and that is too much for a 4C. If they see him as an eller that's no brainer commitment.

Were you willing to sign him to the same thing last year when he had a normal shooting percentage and the Habs PK was 24th? Or how about the year before when the PK was 29th?

People are overstating his importance. He’s having an outlier season in a contract year. He’s not a 3rd line centre, he doesn’t have the skill for that.

Signing 4th liners for 4-5 years is Lou Lamiorello-lite type of management. It’s even more silly considering we have his replacements (Beck and Kapanen) knocking at the door.

It's gonna be us and we need him. Dach suck at center and Dvorak is leaving, no other way around.
I don't think we do need him for more than 2 years. We've got Kapanen and Beck coming in as RHCs, then Hage. We do need a LHC to balance things out a bit but that's hopefully where Florian comes in

Yep. I like the guy but his underlying numbers aren't anything special and it's clearly Heineman driving that line.

It's not like he's some Danault-like gem that just needs the right opportunity to be a dominant two-way guy. He's pretty much average in every facet.

I hear you. And I don't fully disagree with you. However, the arguments I'll make is that you know what you have in Evans. He fits well into your line-up already, so you have that answer. He's someone who can move up in case of injuries. He's great on the dot. He's elite on the PK.

I'll also add that I think next year, he will be the 3C (replacing Dvorak who will either be traded or just let walk). And I believe Beck or Kapanen will be the 4C. Of course down the road, those guys will move ahead of Evans.

Also, with the cap going up significantly over the next few years, some of the top 4th liners will start making that kind of money. And I think Evans is one of those top 4th liners.
