Coming from a Nucks fan,

for what he's capable of,
He'd probably sign something in the high 9s or even 10s.
Its only fair this way too since Nurse's contract will be used as a comparison.

Ah! So just not a serious negotiation
It's not like he threw out a completely absurd number considering what they gave Nurse a few years ago.

Players initially ask for more than they think they'll get but not so much the team walks away.
Team initially offers for less than they think will be accepted, but no so little the player walks away.
Numbers get closer.
They start talking signing bonuses and NMCs

It's standard procedure.

That's why July 1 contracts are always so bad, they don't have time to do the dance and teams either give in to high asks, or they offer something they think the player will definitely accept.

Nurse got 9+ x eight. Dahlin just got 11.5 x 8. Bouchard is asking for less than he should considering he’s the best of those three.

McDavid and Draisaitl are the only important ones to lock in long term, I'd bridge Bouchard for 2-3 years in a lower cap range. He's still young and then can get himself a longer 8 year deal after that one.

Yes, you will possibly end up paying more in the long run, but the 2-3 years buys a significant window and it also moves Nurse from an ironclad NMC to a NTC list he has to submit so he becomes a possibility to move out at that point and his actual salary drops to only 7 mill a year.

Plus you will have a cap that is probably over $100 million by then thanks to the new TV deal.

I wouldn't be in any hurry to lock in to a 8 year deal now just because.

He’s definitely not taking less than Nurse. And I mean, it’s not as if Draisaitl took a discount to stay, he’s the highest paid player in the league. So why should Bouchard have to?

And for anyone who doesn’t remember Stan Bowman, he is not afraid to pay out the ass for these contracts. Toews, Kane, Seabrook, Jones etc.

I'd bridge for 8.5 x 2 or 3 years.

Yes you might pay even more after that, but you get time for the cap to rise significantly and Nurse's deal becomes potentially moveable too.

McDavid 15.5 vs 12
Draisaitl 14 vs 8.5
Bouchard 10 vs 3.9

Oilers will likely be adding 15 million in caphits from 3 players

Oilers don't have much of a choice. Took them 10 years to draft a dman who could make an outlet pass and not totally shit his pants at the offensive blueline, they don't have another 10 years to spare.

That sounds like elite #1 money to me though, and Bouchard isn't and IMO will never be that.

Why’d he accept that though? If he goes short, he could sign a one year deal and then hit UFA. The Oilers best hope is that he has a major regression and they still make the playoffs.

That would be kinda risky on his part though too, one year anything can happen, you can hurt and there goes a long term deal. 2 years x 8.5 gives him a chance to get some bigger money, and then at age 28 sign a long term deal.

McDavid 15.5 vs 12
Draisaitl 14 vs 8.5

Draisaitl's raise is basically already priced, they're paying Brown 3.2 mill in dead cap this year + Neal 1.9 mill buy out + 300k overage on Perry, all of those expire next summer, so that basically is Leon's entire raise. Leon's current salary (8.5) + 3.2 + 1.9 + .3 = 13.9 ... virtually his entire new cap hit.

McDavid and Bouchard will add to the cap sure, but the cap is also potentially nearing 100 million as well in 2 years.
