Probably for the best. Kid really peaked leading up to the draft and just never developed further.
Probably should have gone back to junior for another year before going off to the NCAA. Or just gone to a smaller program where he would have been "the guy" off the bat. Additionally, COVID wrecked development for a ton of guys, especially at Boston University where they barely played in 2020-21.

Part of that was BU’s love of playing NTDP 1st rounders over better or more veteran players under the coaching regime. Mastrosimone and Phillips looked good for stretches and when they looked hot would get shuffled to lower lines and have their playing time cut.

Nah, he just wasn't good enough at the end of the day. It doesn't surprise me at all that he wants to move on with life.

Since Draper took over, have we had a single 2nd round+ pick become worth anything?

Draper took over in 2020.

That’s…
Wallinder
Niederbach
Hanas
Sebrango
Viro

Buium
Mazur
James
Buchelnikov

Augustine
Gibson
Cleveland
Dower-Nilsson

Plante
Becher

As guys we picked in the second and third rounds.
That’s about 1 guy per year that look like they’ll be regulars with a couple other guys that could maybe be regulars like Buium, Gibson abd Buchelnikov.

You would have to assume he was heavily involved in scouting a center playing in the US even if he wasn't the head honcho.

At 5'10" and 165lbs, he'd need Johnny Hockey (RIP) level skills to succeed in the pros.

They didn't count that season for eligibility, so he got to play his 4th real season at Western. Given he was 7th in scoring on that team, it was probably a wise choice for him to move on. At least he got free education.
