Good to see him in the fold. Will be interesting to see if he carve out an NHL niche for himself. In a vacuum, I didn't see Edwards commanding PP time in the NHL and he didn't strike me as a natural PK D either.
I don't think anything has changed about the organization's LHD depth this season. Maybe that Hatakka isn't a long-term piece but that was unlikely to be the case regardless.
People way overstate the likelihood of collegiate players leaving as UFAs.

Edwards is a much more "rounded" DMan than Casey, and he is 6' and 195 lbs so it isn't like he is small.
Edwards is a good skater. Not a real comparison but on some level I see a guy similar to Vilen.
Edwards is a great asset, even if he ends up a top Utica player, or a piece for a trade. GLAD he is signed.

Any drafted prospect that gets an ELC has to be counted as a win at this point. Even if he's just a really good AHL player, we need those.

i’d say vilen and hattakka both showed promise early in their development and they could very well both be behind edwards now. i’m sure even misyul was ahead of him at some point.
at one point he was also behind ohkotyiuk, muk, and bahl just to show how quickly depth can thin out
Not sure why, but my knee jerk thought was that Edwards reminded me of Parker Wotherspoon when I saw him in the WHL. Wotherspoon and Brandon Carlo were on the same team. Carlo was a boring but steady D while Wotherspoon was more eager to join the rush or make a big hit (and put himself out of position).

Edrwards is an actual defenseman(for now). Its not that easy for him to win the roster spot but he is a great skater, so I guess he will be good enough in 7th/call up role in near future.

Fair enough, I did forget that this talk is more than 2 years old. But yeah I don't expect Hatakka to be in the organization next year and I do think Vilen will get NHL time next season (assuming he's still here).
Puckpedia reporting the Devils gave Edwards $250k/year in potential performance bonuses, but he is making $925k in the NHL, slightly less than the entry-level maximum.
Edwards has signed a SPC with Utica, so I expect he will be in uniform soon Comets play 3 in 3 this weekend. He is on the AHL.com transaction page as added to the Comets roster.
